For simple wireless in a couple of rooms a traditional AP approach will be far easier and cheaper. I've not deployed Ruckus but I've evaluated it. I'd only look at Ruckus as a contender if you are looking at growing your wireless infastructure over time. If you have no plans, and just want these two rooms and they will only get occasional / low-end use, get a couple of off-the-shelf AP's and set up RADIUS on a server. I have to admit I'm at a bit of a loss as to why so many people on here sing it's praises. It didn't inspire me at all, and it much more costly than other managed wireless systems that work just as well. That said, I'm aware that the amount of people on here actually using it can't all be wrong, so it must have something going for it which I've missed!

Hi All, Does anyone have any experience transitioning from Exchange 2003 to 2010? Did you essentially transition to do a swing upgrade to 2010 and then remove 2003 completely, or did you co-exist? Is there anything to watch out for or be aware of, or is it a nice smooth process? I'm hoping to get the time to virtualise this over the weekend, but the aim will be to do it on Monday morning (With E2010 running on Hyper-V!) Cheers

I'm typing this on my iPhone so my post will be short (unique for me!) I see the afternoon generated quite a lot more comment, and a fair bit off-topic too. Thank you for the 'thanks' - lots of good will in here today, which is heartening as I wasn't sure how my post would be recieved! Is there a general feeling about how to proceed? A site poll asking if needed? Rule suggestions here? Just leaveto russ and the mod / admin / god section?

I haven't caught up on everyone else's comments for the last hour or so, but my suggestion certianly wasn't for "strict" rules - just rules of any flavour which are defined and readily available!

That is a fair point, but the flip side is that if only a small percentage refrain from posting an oposition to an unsuitable post then you run the risk of unsuitable posts increasing and not being challenged enough! If there was a guide/rule then the unsuitable post could be avoided in the first place or removed safely/without issue.

Might it be worth considering the creation of more specific in-house rules? That way every poster can be aware of whether their post is appropriate or not, and then also make an educated guess as to why their post was editied / removed? I'm sure it would be something that lots of us would assist with. Maybe all members could submit ideas in a specific thread about it, so that the community ends up having a sense of creating it themselves?

I'm hoping this post reads suitably and isn't mistaken for a Behind the Red Door submission... Does this site have any predefined rules or a code of conduct? Do the Moderators work to this list, or just use their own individual judgement? The reason I ask is that I am genuinely interested, but also because there seems to be a large inconsistency with what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable on here lately? The most recent examples that come to mind are the removal / locking of the "FedEx Smoker" thread - I participated and got thanked in it, kept track of it, but certainly can't think why it would have needed to be removed? Also the Teacherswebfolder thread - blatant advertising from a company who isn't an official sponsor! This must seem like a bit of a kick in the teeth for the decent companies like CP, NetCtrl, Smoothwall (and many others) who devote time, money and expertise in these forums for the same luxuries the above company seem to be getting for free? I don't want to seem overly negative on the job the Moderators do - I know they give up a large amount of time and energy to try and keep our community troll-free and I thank them for that. I'm just not convinced that the policing of this site is consistent, or follows a code or rule set that the rest of the site could be aware of and try and adhere to?

Although i'm not rolling out to the network yet, I have been using Win 7 on my office station since the last Beta. Now using 7pro and our 2003 redirection policies seem to work fine. I've tested on various user types and each get desktop and start menu fine. The only thing I did find was that the wallpaper didn't get applied. I'm not sure this helps you - maybe we're unique / lucky, or maybe its worth checking permissions on the redirection shares / fine tune policies etc? I would still listen to the above advice though - 2008 is a much more suitable option for a full rollout.

I'm fairly sure there is a log off script in the default ones that get installed? If not, or if they've been removed Im fairly sure it's easy to do via the wizard you get. If you get stuck PM me and I'll remember to send you one on Monday if I can do it.

Dear Suppliers, I have a slightly unusual request! I would like to be quoted on A3 Dye Sublimation Printers / Systems please! Our ADT team would like to purchase a printer/system in the near future. They would probably give you a list of incoming calls, but probably wouldn't divulge the number behind a witheld call (either from them not knowing it or to protect the privacy of the person who witheld it). I'm not sure that would have been the case. But without strategic planning, consultation or advice several years ago we won't know. (That isn't a dig at you - I know you had about as much influence as I did back then!) Personally I think if SWGfL or Cornwall LA had put their hand in the air offering a centralised Moodle installation, we'd have took the option. It has been a huge task for many administrators who weren't fluent in web deployment to get their individual sites up and running, and a massive task getting staff enthused and trained in using Moodle and using it as a key part of teaching and learning. It is probably those kind of efforts that stick in the minds of schools with Moodle or any other VLE when thinking about Merlin. My concern is that despite SWGfL / Cornwall not picking a VLE solution, several years have now passed in which time schools have been forced to pick their own solution - whether that was Moodle or something else. Now comes Merlin championed by the LA and presented as a Learning Platform, which largely mirrors functionality offered by VLE solutions already in operation, and offers more questions or concerns than answers and new functionality (at this stage). Schools who have no VLE will probably embrace Merlin. Schools who do have a VLE and want the other functionality face playing the waiting game for Merlin to hopefully deliver, or are forced to go it alone again.

Although I've never needed to do it I believe you can have two or more authentication methods. You could choose email to be the first and then LDAP to be the second - basically it should try one and then if that doesn't work try the other.

LDAP basically authenticates in the same way that a user does when they log on to your network. (I realise that I've automatically assumed you have a domain there... do you?) If you use LDAP authentication then the user logs on with the same username and password that they do to log on to a computer on the network. If you need some help give me a PM or email.

I'd hazzard a guess they have RM Easymail and have to buy an additional block of addresses or something.

Superfletch, I hope I haven't upset you by my previous post on here? I am aware that for the most part we both have a certain degree of anonymity on here, but I am also aware we both know each other in the real world, and suspected you might read this thread! I wanted my posts to be a fair reflection of my investigation in to Merlin for other readers, not a reflection if your involvement in the project. I dare say if you were involved at an earlier / more senior point a lot of my negative points might not exist! I'm fine with most of the things you addressed in your previous post other than point 7... Absolutely not! Why should every single Moodle administrator have to personally investigate how to implement some form of Merlin / Moodle interaction? If SWGfL or Cornwall LA wishes to present Merlin as a viable option, and then expect schools to pick up the bill further down the road, why should they also expect us to make the two systems work? If two or three years ago SWGfL and/or Cornwall LA had worked with schools to offer a unified VLE solution instead of forcing schools to go it alone to address DCSF requirements ourselves then we would never have been in the situation of finding Merlin offering 80% of what we already have and promising 20% of something we might never get.

My current role is slightly different, but when I was network manager it did yes. Mainly only because of local circumstance though - it was capable of being managed via the network and no one else had knowledge or interest, so I took it on. On newer sites I would expect it to be normal practice as it would probably tie in with unified communications etc.

It's a legacy feature that still exists on our vanilla network for pupils, set in an old group policy. Pupils are unable to right click on the desktop or inside an explorer window. Obviously inside applications they can right click etc. To be honest, the next time we overhaul policies I think it is a fair contender to be reversed. We don't run OCR, but it cuts off useful functionality so sometimes causes minor issues.

Are you sure that it is specifically your passport, or just that they require evidence that the school has made some form of check that you are entitled to work etc? We certainly don't hold copies of passports (unless i've missed it and also not been required to produce it), but we do have to hand over original copies of birth certificate, utility bill, driving license etc prior to employment. These are then recorded as evidence and sent off at the same time as a CRB. Our Personnel Officer keeps all of this information in SIMS and on a seperate spreadsheet for the purpose of audit and OfSTED.

I think Witch did mention that the AV engineer/technician "had a look on here" too? Same person with a name like "visualman"? I think the Witch post is definately the one to concentrate on whether it is or isn't the same issue. It has a host of suggestions some which may have not been tried?
