  1. Apple. By far the better structured business that always own the complete product/user experience. There's so much more that company can do. Microsoft are a software company in trouble. Turning MS around will put you in an early grave. WYR Live on the moon or live under water?
  2. Hungry, you can live a lot longer without food! WYR spend a year in the sahara or a year in siberia?
  3. Street Begger, Bet you can steal earn more money WYR travel anywhere in time or travel in space?
  4. Watching the trailer I'd thought they'd remade Mad Max 2! Actually, so did I. The same, but different (about the best praise possible for a remake, better than "The same, but worse"). Liked the odd hoodwink to the Arnie film - "Two Weeks"
  5. I thought much the same, but I did actually find a good reason! We're using App-V and the prerequisites are a pain to install as part of the task sequence, so I created a wim with them pre-installed Actually just re-read the OP and noticed "Secure Boot UEFI" not sure what difference that makes, but I'm probably being no help here
  6. Are you building a base image in the VM and capturing the WIM to be distributed to physical UEFI clients later? If so, AFAIK, you can just use a legacy NIC and BIOS mode in the VM. The resulting WIM *should* install fine on a physical UEFI machine. I did this earlier today with no issues. All the formatting and driver issues should be taken care of in the SCCM Task Sequence, the image should be pretty generic. The capture process strips all drivers out as part of Sysprep anyway.
  7. Didn't they give away the GAC with one of the covertapes? I had a copy previous to that which came with this horrible lenslok system (special magnifying glass you folded in a particular way to decode letters on the screen). I'm sure when AA put it on the covertape (without lenslok) they ran a competition. I entered with an adventure game based on the London underground I created using GAC. Got a thank you back from The Balrog (obviously didn't win - rubbish created by an 8-9 year old!).
  8. Lol, I got that And makes perfect sense. But, if the code base between SKU's is a lot closer the they can do more with it. For instance - All game releases work on both PC and XBox. No porting, exact same game code. A chip or software flag on XBox tells the game to use some predefined (by developer) graphics settings. On PC that chip/flag is missing so the game displays a settings menu for the end user. At the moment the code bases for the two OS's are not the same even though the hardware is pretty close. Games from one can't run on the other without re-compilation. If the code base between SKU's is the same then that problem goes away. All of a sudden the XBox can become Microsofts version of the Steam Console. No?
  9. I found it when I was trying to remember the multi-format games mag I used buy each month in the late 80's. Turned out it was ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment) I'd had almost every issue until parents made me dump them in a house move (too much weight). Stoked to find them all in the archive. Also Amstrad Action I've been trying to work out what my favourite Amiga mag was back then, but can't for the life of me remember. I know it wasn't one of the the big 3. Might have been "Amiga User International" but that sounds wrong somehow.
  10. I've posted this before, but It's my favourite Interweb discovery of the past year (yes, I know I'm late to the game) and relevant: Internet Archive Old Computer Mags Internet Archive Old Gaming Mags And yes, they do make very interesting reading now!
  11. Sorry, I meant that in a steam console / steamos kind of way instead of way rather than killing actual steam off. In fact it's be a good thing for steam in general. If XBox One (presumably, or maybe it's successor) runs a vanilla Windows and off the shelf XBox games run on that and/or a standard PC then there's no need for a Steam console and to be honest, I see it as a good reason to move from Playstation to XBox One/whateversnext.
  12. History repeating itself? BBC News - Windows systems set to be merged by Microsoft Win ME + Win2k = WinXP Win8 + Win Phone 8 + XBox OS = Windows 9? or Windows 10? Can Playstation / Steam compete with a proper Windows Direct-X x86 console?
  13. yes you do, I don't remember it being that expensive on top of the basic EES though. Must admit I clean forgot about the MDOP requirement. We're hopefully rolling out most of our application software out using it this summer.
  14. If you have an EES subscription then you have access to App-V. What we've done here is installed SIMS as normal on a virtual machine and have App-V monitor the install. It then creates a single package that can be sent out via App-V. Does need the App-V client on all machines though. That said, so far, it's the single best, easiest method of mass installing SIMS I've found. And new versions are pretty quick to install on clients using this method.
  15. I think for both Office and Windows, if left alone, there's a 30 day grace period before the client needs to contact the server for licencing. And the server will only dish out licenses if the prerequisite number of requests have been met. I tend to get impatient and use the VAMT tool on the KMS server to force update the clients with license info.
  16. It's a common issue. There is a GPO to tell Office not to automatically use the Internet which solves the problem, but effects online clipart. Users -> Admin Templates -> Office 2013/Tools | Options | General | Service Options.../Online Content -> Online Content Options = Enable (Do not allow Office to connect to the Internet)
  17. Erm, Yes! Kinda. The law is more meant to protect the income of content creators. It just so happens a lot of the content creators are now 9-5 jobbers working for faceless corps rather than independents. Not really, they were actually reasonably popular back in the day. More a victim of bad timing than anything. CD Walkmans, CD-R's, MP3's and Napster all appeared at around the same time.
  18. AFAIK, this law was finally updated a month or so ago, so it's no longer illegal to format shift any content so long as it is for personal use only and you are not distributing the content in any way. This includes ripping DVD's to file servers, CD's to MP3's, VHS tapes to DVD, etc. I believe the education fair use updates allows for copying parts of works from an original source for research purposes. So you could rip a key scene from To Kill A Mockingbird (classic film) and give a copy to each student on a pen drive for them to cross reference with the book they are reading. But, you couldn't burn them copies of the entire film.
  19. Ooooh, Double Sided!
  20. Just to be clear - you do need to purchase volume upgrade licenses for the machines being imaged in order to do this. - - - Updated - - - Just to be clear - you do need to purchase volume upgrade licenses for the machines being imaged in order to do this.
  21. If you plan to create single OS images using something like Ghost, WDS, MDT, FOG or Clonzilla, then you really should be purchasing volume upgrade licenses, either EES or Academic Select, in addition to the supplied OEM licenses. The volume upgrade licenses include downgrade rights to pretty much any previous professional version of Windows at least back as far as XP. Imaging without a proper volume licensed copy of Windows is something of a faff and not recommended. You need individual activation codes for each PC instead of one volume code in the image for all PCs (or a KMS/MAK server). The thought of building 49 machines without using any type of imaging tech makes me shiver - - - Updated - - - If you plan to create single OS images using something like Ghost, WDS, MDT, FOG or Clonzilla, then you really should be purchasing volume upgrade licenses, either EES or Academic Select, in addition to the supplied OEM licenses. 22. I think you need to right-click and empty trash
  23. Staff can, within reason, do as they please here. I don't see/feel the need to restrict their settings. They are adults in charge of kids, they should know what is and isn't appropriate. Getting it wrong is a disciplinary issue in my book, not a reason to enforce a corporate desktop on everyone because a few can't be trusted. That said, I'm making one change this year. Staff Desktops are being redirected to their network home folder. Means work saved on the desktop will be backed up over night and less likely to cause issue when I want to delete profiles. For pupils everything is tied down and restricted. Redirected read-only desktop and start menu. We run bginfo as part of their logon.bat script to set background image with some useful machine/user info displayed. - - - Updated - - - Staff can, within reason, do as they please here. 24. What's wrong with you people? It's clearly a Futurama style transportation tube for The Borrowers!
  25. Overflow? What's on the other side of the wall?
