N95 is FAR too slow. If they'd put a similar chip to the iPhone then it'd be awesome. GPS is slow and weak and applications take too long to load - like the N80. I found myself shouting at the damn thing "I want to send a text, what are YOU doing?" Phones have a long way to go - the k8xx is fast and that's what counts - camera is awesome too. When the hardware is up to it and cheap enough I hope SE are leading the way.

Didn't have a problem with the student accounts running the script. Guess you could resolve any problem with checking the permissions in the folder where the script is running from... The permissions problem I had was with the folder that is storing the log.

The understand that there is a flaw but, as I've already explained, implementing a proxy server is not an option at the moment and I will as soon as I can. Using folder permissions the kids could view the folder but it appears to be empty. They think we keep a log but don't understand how this works - logoff scripts would take some explaining for most of them! Since Tuesday afternoon I have a file for 583 students - that's about half. It shows that, basically, we have a school full of kids that like goowy and don't like working. Can't wait to run off my first report from this data.

How easy would it be to give this data folder a gui so that teachers can use it easily?

The best exam software I was asked to install required a 'server' for every ten computers - furthermore the 'clients' needed to be always connected to the same 'servers' -I just refused... There really is some BAD, BAD edu software out there...

I've been saying this since I started but basically the network has been neglected and we're a pretty new team trying to undo some of the mistakes that were made years ago... The infastructure is just starting cope - but we're left with no money and no backup. I live in fear of arriving to a dead HDD in one of the servers - that'll kill either the teachers homes or the students. At that point I think I'll hide. Thanks dhicks - could you post the code to the scripts area? The head of tech is arranging for various companies to come in and talk at us for a few hours before leaving an overpriced quote.. I think a letter to the head may be needed. It was raised at exec but they need a proposal before it can be looked at. Am I the only person that's lost a HDD before??? (not gonna start a FFS)

Can I ask why you're running it on a server? I had to set this up last year and installed on the teacher PC at the front of the room - running XP. I got decent support from them but it shouldn't have required any support really - it's crappy software and needlessly complicated. What's the problem you're having with IE7? Pages loading incorrectly? I was running IE7 and never found any problems with the browser - the biggest problem was that in order for pages to load correctly you needed to be logged into the computer as an administrator.

We currently only have the LEA filter - our deputy asked me to look into something that would cover us if we needed to prove that someone had (or had not) been accessing a particular site. I've been pushing to implement a proxy but only have a spur of the hardware in this building and don't have my own server - let alone a server I could connect to the optical switch that the LEA maintain... Poor me... This should work neatly to prevent kids thinking about doing things they shouldn't. In one afternoon it's clear than Top Shop and Dorothy Perkins are more interesting than working!

What about tacking a front end on this? How easy would that be?

Just created a new folder with the correct permissions. Do you actually get an error message - I didn't. It started off only working for me and after some tinkering it's all good. The only problem is the size of the folder. After one lesson it's 4.5MB... 6 lessons a day... etc Think it'll need regular archiving

That works really well after a bit of messing around with permissions. At least we have a basic log now!

Kids pick it up quickly enough- you only start reading about it when you record games - then it starts to be useful.

After a bit of advice... We're currently in the horrible position where our small, slow backup tapes have been all but abadoned and the network is not backed up at all. There wasn't any money available this year but we may be able to get an overspend okayed... I'm all for a Linux/ opensource solution to keep costs down but haven't found anything that can do the job. Same with the hardware - I'm happy to build a dedicated server and sort out RAIDs and such if that's the best/cheapest way to do it... Four servers totalling around 1TB. Ideally I'd like this to be installed in our Training Centre rack so it's 'offsite'. The centre is on a 1Gb/1Gb optical connection to the servers and main switch. I'd like it to be as automatic as possible, constantly trickling data over or working hard overnight to backup the previous day. How do you...

Try an out of case test. I had a similar problem and there was a problem with the mounting points on the board - had me sweating for hours. Could be a corrupt BIOS though - try clearing or reflash if you can. Otherwise a trip back to the shop
