So you block Wikipedia then? I don't block it but I currently don't have the ability to block by content. Haven't had a problem with wikipedia here so didn't occur... Is that a widespread problem site?

The only real advantage atm is the fact that if you drop one it's more likely to still be working... speed, price and storage capacity are all lacking. (I'm still jealous you get to play with one!)

I use a small standalone application called B Gone which looks at Internet Explorer's title bar and closes the browser if it finds anything which matches it's keyword list. Very effective. Why do you want the kids to be able to look at the rest of the site if it contains offensive language? It's unlikely to be lesson related, isn't it?

Can you get cable in your area? We have 20Mb connections available in Portsmouth - if the other site was more than a standard wireless AP could handle I'd have a cable or ADSL line just for VLAN... Cheap and I reckon up to the job for only 5 computers - if it was another full site then you'd be best off renting a cable.

I handled this for an outside group that came to use our centre. Not only did I set it up, I dealt with every aspect of these exams and barely got a thank you. I even wrote up a guide on how to book in the exams and register students for the person that was supposed to be responsible (she requested) and it was ignored when the resits came round. Only a couple of kids passed a meaningless exam - I know this isn't FFS but I HATE these tests - put your foot down or we'll turn into TAs to cover when teachers are off munching buffet food in some 'meeting' To clarify - uninstall and run.

@ Quackers - I think that's the first, and probably last time I'll hear a laptop compared to a cow... very... strange We have 30 laptops that 'graze' on the LapSafe when they can - used all the time and nearly two years old with a battery life of about 2 hours. I've dropped screen brightness and CPU speed though... They're a basic model from Novatech - still doing some 15" 4:3 screens. Ours have even survived a few drops. The main school has started buying HP laptops as we got a really bad batch of laptops a little while ago (8/10 not working!) The HP seem robust but I hate the trackpad keys! SQUIDGE

I would start building a wall

Been looking at one too - very tempting with the price and the fact it runs an opensource OS. Small screen putting me off atm - my xbox might be a little bigger but I've not found a codec it doesn't like and as I can select tracks from my laptop and send them to the xbox now... ...think I'll wait til I move (if it ever happens!)

But you'll be locked out of updates - have you not been following jailbreak? Apple aren't being 'co-operative' My mate's phone is fun to play with but as far as I can see not very practical. The camera sucks and there's no flash - but more importantly, it's really difficult to send a text... no buttons you see...

I think that's exactly what I'll do. Might even stick it in a really dodgy old battered case so everyone can see where their backups live!

On topic - we use an Aruba wireless network - it behaves well but the cheap PoE switches to the APs aren't very good. If there really isn't a budget I'd go for a commercial Cisco system- chances are Aruba will make something wonderful happen for a little less!

Similar - I couldn't get iTalc working with more than one student PC but it's apparently a lot easier to setup now. The obvious advantage is the price!
