I'm saying that a company can't break down what services you may listen or watch and charge you for those. This happens everywhere. I don't use a lot of the services that BBC offer but everyone pays towards the complete service - it can't run any other way. If we were taxed by the services we intend to use then there would be very little money available to families that cannot work. The only other way it can work is via advertising and I'm sick and tired of that everywhere.

I recommend BT.. it's even newer too. I very much doubt there is anyone that doesn't want to receive any BBC services at all - but I can see your point and, if it were feasible to offer a limited time for BBC services or a free licence to those that tuned out the BBC services I'm sure this would be offered. It isn't really, is it? It would be like saying "I only drive on a couple of roads during my daily commute and therefore I should only pay tax on that bit, why should I pay towards roads I'll never drive on?" This whole subject is going to experience a bit of an overhaul in the next few years with video on demand the natural progression, something is going to have to change soon.

If you don't have a TV that's tuned in then you don't pay. Exactly what you want. You can watch DVDs and play games all you like - tune it in and you pay for a license... I can't see your problem. You'll even continue to get all the web services!

I don't watch my TV very much and rarely BBC but I think it's something that is very important to keep as property of the country. I can understand if you'd rather not know that your paying for it but I think there are many, many more things to resent... Cleaning up after drunken vandalism and fights, cigarettes/drugs/alcohol for people that can't be bothered to work, subsidies for poor public transport, random public 'art' and buildings that no one like (they're doing a lot of this in Havant/Portsmouth) Most of my TV is downloaded, it's more convenient, for me. Doesn't mean I shouldn't pay towards the cost of producing the programs or other content. And I'm not saying the BBC doesn't waste money... just... there are FAR less productive and more expensive things...

I look at it like this - £10 a month isn't very much for a household to pay to fund everything the BBC does for us. I cannot imagine my parent's house without Radio 4, getting into a taxi playing Radio 1, work without continuous News 24. The World Service saw Alan Johnston through his ordeal recently. If I want to know the weather, I'm looking for educational resources, checking TV listings or news I can go to bbc.co.uk and will not be disappointed, all the time, no adverts. Also, CBeebies tortues my friends with kids - hilarity. New TV isn't very impressive, I'll admit, but the BBC has produced most of the best television. Full stop. I'll pay £2.50 a week for that with no issues - hell, it doesn't even buy me a pint anymore.

You cannot just tune out the channels that receive funding from the license... hell, it's cheap enough anyway.

I want it to connect to a computer - it would be very messy to do it any other way - the manual talks of Netmeeting and IDSN! Old school indeed

Problem is, I can't actually see this kit being used as it is designed. I was hoping that it could throw video over LAN to a browser but it doesn't seem to be able to. One of the English teachers bought it years ago and remembered it when the subject of video conferencing came up in a meeting... Struggling to find a use for it that teachers will embrace for lessons... or even a single lesson...

You setup the IP address by going through the setup when plugged into a TV - then it assigns by DHCP

Sorry to reopen this thread... did you get anywhere with this? I have one of these on my desk atm (dug out of a cabinet in the back of a cupboard) and am keen to see what it is capable of. I probably have a little more documentation and software than you - and am happy to send copies if you like...

LOVE the cress one! I set the screensaver to an image of a crack LCD and got a good gasp! The best was ongoing for about a week... my old supervisor was a bit 'mean' so I ran a USB extension under the pod of desks, from his computer, to a mouse within foot range of about 4 fellow disgruntled employees... Best. Week. Ever. Moving it round, clicking on things... yet noone ever saw it when his computer was playing up... Evil

Having another go at setting up this software and have got much further than the last time - I think on account of the fact that the software has improved. Now stuck at the stage , with a test setup of just one teacher computer and one student computer, that the teacher software runs and I can add both computers to the 'classroom'. Only the teacher computer is connectable, the student machine says host unavailable and keeps flashing up a baloon that says: 'Somebody [teacher IP address] tried to access this computer but could not authenticate itself successfully' Can anyone help?

No PE in the rain? Puh!
