  1. All depends what they're paying! I'll fix 200 a week if the company is happy to fill my bank account with large piles of cash! Give them a call and ask what it actually entails - remember though - you'll not get holiday time to catch up!
  2. Even better... NOBODY TURNED UP! so the chairs were really there all on their own (I wonder how they made the booking?)
  3. My colleague has just put this sign up outside a room for an event this evening... (quality is shot because it's my phone)
  4. What about the environment they're operating in? Plently of ventilation etc? Hit their forum for a speedy solution - I hate those niggling issues...
  5. Have you checked for overheating and memory issues? The place you're most likely to get a response is http://forum.novatech.co.uk - they don't like problems sitting on there for long!
  6. I agree but he has also installed additional RAM so has an untested RAM slot and DIMM - not to mention that the two may be incompatible with each other and/or the board. Having worked in technical support for the supplier of this board I know that 9/10 it's the memory not a perphaps slighty faulty PSU. A machine hanging is a characteristic of overheating and as Novatech send goods with UPS or DHL the hsf being slightly loose is also a possibility(strike: certainty ).
  7. I thought that was the best thing to do - make sure they all get it early because it is awful otherwise. I can still remember the pain of having chickenpox at 2 or 3. I also had shingles which is chickenpox after you've already had it and that is nothing - no pain or discomfort but I did get a week off school!
  8. Power is almost certainly not the problem. Run memtest86 to check out the memory and the 'PC Health Stats' in the BIOS to see the the CPU is overheating... The problem is not the PSU!
  9. XP is bigger than that! Doesn't matter though - an install with software running about 7Gb compressed only takes three minutes to reimage from a partition... Win98 is sluggish, unsupported and horrible to look at. Anyone still using 9 year old software by choice needs their head checked. Vista is horrible too though, stick with XP! Reimage the room with a lovely fresh installation or refuse to support it. Mucking around defragging and running scandisk is going to cost you more time than it's worth IMHO...
  10. I'm not too fussy - IE7 is better with some sites - FF is better with others...
  11. Maybe we're just lucky...
  12. You'll get assigned an account manager... have a chat with general sales first and they'll point you in the right direction. There is another post about Novatech.co.uk somewhere on EduGeek. Our AM is Michael Foy.
  13. That's a really good price for that spec of PC. Whereabouts did you buy them from at that price if you that if you don't mind me asking? not at all... we have an account with a local supplier (also where I worked before cpgs) Novatech... give them a call for a price on any custom build...
  14. G5 - Core Duo and Core 2 Duo iMacs have overheating issues. Best performance and cramped conditions do not go hand in hand... http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=imac+g5+overheating
  15. Sure - we get that too (the agressive and loud sorts) but with computers they seem to be lacking the gene that controls ability to circumvent! Most of the time we're safe and all they want to do is chat on meebo and goowy... It's interesting how girls behave when there are no boys around - very scary sometimes...
  16. It's a really common problem - try a google. I remember shortly after the G5 iMac came out there were huge amounts of returns due to crashing and components literally burning out - even scorching the mainboard or damaging other equipment. The screen produces a lot of heat- as does the HDD, you've got a dedicated GPU and powerful CPU packed into a small box. You must have good aircon if you've not had any problems chucking video around one! (I'm pretty sure) Macs don't defy physics...
  17. What spec is that? The bottom of the market one has far to little ram really @ 512mb 17" 2Ghz. 1GB memory 160GB hard drive1 8x DL SuperDrive ATI Radeon X1600 graphics We have four of these, but the 20" ones, and they speed along. Much faster than the few PCs we have similar spec, but running Adobe Premier. I am not a Mac fan I'm afraid but not about to turn this thread into another Mac vs Windows. Suffice to say the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages IMHO The PCs are 2.8Ghz DC CPU, 1GB DDR2 250GB hdd and 7600GT graphics - not bad for £2790 for 10. I going to go back to the media studies teacher with a couple of linux options and VideoStudio and see what he prefers - the last thing IT needs is to be supporting lessons. On a slight sidenote - iMacs are not the correct tool for video work - they overheat too easily as they are basically laptops on their side- if you wanted Mac the only option would be the Mac Pros
  18. Thanks Cyber - What are the strengths of these? Which would you recommend for GCSE or is it a case of see what fits...
  19. Thanks for the advice - I've emailed them for a price. Is there any opensource, even for linux, that anyone can recommend?
  20. You shouldn't be running up and down stairs or in the corridors... Very naughty...
  21. It's gone out on an image so nice and easy - I see it more as an extra layer of protection. It's infuriating to try and find a chat site to work when the browser keeps closing on you! It's a girls school so 'inappropriate' material, and logging said activities, is not the issue. Our problem is lessons being consumed by chatting online and this works really neatly
  22. I'm looking for any recommendations for video editing software for our GCSE media students next September. We a re buying 10 PCs with decent storage and dedicated graphics but I daren't google 'video editing software' as I fear the deluge of shareware and adverts may bring down the network! What do you use and is it successful? Does something as beautiful as Audacity exist for video - we don't mind paying!
  23. That is mental- Perphaps HP is ensuring you need a new computer when the most essential key is missing or damaged? I can think of a lot of words tht I can't type without a ' ' Damn - where's my ' ' gone?
  24. Do 'Wii Sports' count? I cycle in a half- hour every day but the exercise is just a bonus - it's the cheapest, fastest way to travel. I did swim a lot about a year ago but broke my jaw cycling and found breathing difficult so swimming hasn't been resumed (yet)
  25. After the nightmare of trying to setup a proxy on an old server (I've assumed dodgy hardware) I looked at other options to prevent unacceptable use. I've installed B Gone on 25 computers and added terms like 'Instant Messenger', 'meebo', 'goowy' and 'Web Messenger' to it's blacklist. This is the most effective software I have seen - not for features or ability to sniff out a dodgy page - the way it deals with a violation is to simply close the browser! Kid searches 'web chat' and the term is picked up in the title bar and the window closes. Kid uses an IP address - *bing* IE closes. Will report back if it starts causing me problems but so successful I thought I'd give it a thread.
