We had exactly the same issue with FMS. Select 'Targets' then the 'Databases' tab. Your SIMS & FMS Databases should be listed, if not add them, if they are listed double check the settings. Our problem was that we had mis-typed the server name. If they are set up correctly if you select 'Agents' and the 'Targets' tab and find your SIMS server the current versions of your databases should be listed. If they are blank then the settings are incorrect.

Because it is better than word! You should see the carnage when our food and textiles students try to rescale a graphics intensive word document produced on A4 to A3, when the deadline for their exam course work was yesterday! It is the same every year, and every year we tell the teaching staff that to tell the students not to use word. Frankly it is unfair on the students if they are not advised to use the appropriate software.

We finally solved this problem. We have "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" set for our students. An application (Trustee Rapport) is preventing a folder in %USERPROFILE%\appdata\local from being deleted, however the profile is deleted from the registry. The next time the user logs on to the same PC, a new local profile is created, but because the %USERNAME% folder already exists, %USERNAME%.Domain.00x is generated for the new profile.

This is an old thread, however I think I have stumbled upon a fix. Stale user profile folders are not deleted completely in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi Nick, Sorry its taken a while to respond - we have had other priorities (change of broadband supplier). It turned out that ~\bookingsystem\Default.aspx was causing the problem. We're not sure why, but replacing it with a copy from .zip file cured the problem. Thanks again for HAP+ and for the support you provide through Edugeek.net.

Firstly thanks Nick for an excellent piece of software. After our upgrade from v10 pre-release to V10 final, we can no longer see any bookings or booking slots on the main page. They are still visible on the overview pages. The date picker does not work and it looks like the date isn't being loaded. Our server is 2012 R2. We would appreciate your advice. Sean

We love Impero, however like synaesthesia we only found out about 4.022 by accident and had to request it, and agree their communication could be better.

Virtulisation is a no brainier. A modern two socket server will have ample processing power, however get as much memory as you can afford. A SAN is nice if you have the budget, but with Veeam not essential; however you will need to backup to a NAS or fast (USB3 or SATA) external hard drive. Hyper-V on server 2012 R2 is a vast improvement over 2008 and very nearly as good as VMware. I would recommend that you run a separate physical DC.

An interesting article but I think it is approaching the problem from the wrong end. The car analogy is very good. But what is wrong with the fact that I can just get in my car and drive? It does everything I need it to do, behaves in a predictable manner, thanks to Sat Nav I rarely get lost, it rarely breaks and if it does I give it to an expert to sort out. I can’t wait until it drives itself. That’s how IT should be. In the words of the song “But I got a girlfriend and things to get done” (see link). It’s not people; the problem is that the technology that is still maturing.

We used to get canned cheese in the ration packs in my RAF days. It's actually quite tatsty, like eating a very dry cheese triangle. We feed the fish with it during a diving expedition, they seemed to love the stuff. The thing that has always puzzled me, is how do fish know that canned cheese is tasty and safe to eat?

We’re going through a similar exercise and re-structuring our server rooms, but are taking a different route. We are currently running two file servers, to share the workload and provide redundancy, as we can move the users to the other server if one failed. However we have audited our sever performance and found that the file servers are working at a fraction of their capacity, and having each server acting as a back-up for the other adds a layer of complexity. We are actually planning to go to a single file server and use the second purely as a stand-by. It greatly simplifies data replication and management of user home drives. Using some of the new shared storage and the replication features in Server 2012 we are confident we can get instant fail-over to the stand by server. We are also planning to use VM replication to provide a similar set-up for our virtual hosts (i.e one live and one for fail over). Our servers are Prolient DL380s (G5s, a G6 and a G7) with duel Quad core CPUs. We are going to have to increase the memory on the virtual host. Sean

I thought it matched the windows regional settings; however this is overridden if a document is loaded that was created on a PC with a different regional setting. If windows is set to UK English, new documents will be checked using UK English. If you load a document that was created on a PC set to U.S English, then the spell checker will change for that document.

Here's My 2ps worth iPads are great - I have one. Android is getting better all the time, my wife has a Galaxy S3 and is turning into a geek. However for use in a school a tablet need to be easily manageable, have direct access to shared folders, and connect to printers easily. So I'm afraid for us Window 8 is the only option, however they will have to be the pro version; RT cannot join a Domain and so cannot be managed easily. Sean

With regard to meeting the job specification, I disagree quite strongly that you need to match it fully. I’ve seen a lot of adverts that have specified everything but the metaphorical kitchen sink, and it is obvious that whoever wrote it did not understand IT or the role and are simply ‘fishing’ for a high quality applicants. The advice I was given was that if you can match 80% or more it is worth applying. I did not fully meet the specification for my current job! The way the majority of applications will be processed is that a table is drawn up with the relevant criteria, each applicant is given a score against each of the criteria, and the people with the highest score get shortlisted. So if you’ve only got 2 years experience instead of 3, you might lose a point, however if you have worked in a school and have a wide range of skills, you may have an advantage over somebody who has been working in first and second line support for 5 years, but who has very limited knowledge of networking, virtualisation and SANs. With regard to CV’s, you can easily cut and paste the majority of it into your application. There is no harm in including it with your application, however it is not an excuse for being lazy, still fill in the application form as fully as possible.

We have just been wrestling with this one. We've gone with keeping the base images as small as possible and deploy the software, as this makes everything easier to manage. If we update or change an application we do not have to rebuild the base images, although we take a hit as it takes longer to do a deployment. We are using XP and as far as I am aware cannot inject applications into images. It took us a least 4 months to get OSD working as well, SCCM is not the most intuitive system to set-up.

Couldn’t agree more. Ethernet is renowned for high latency and difficult to manage QoS. What is more likely to happen is a switch to more efficient protocols for example Fibre Channel over Ethernet or ATA over Ethernet, with high speed optical links between cabinets. There has never been a compelling reason to use Cat 6, it was made redundant on the day somebody worked out how to push 1Gb over Cat5e. The economics of installing it does not make sense, particularly if you have a building full of Cat5e. (IMHO)
