Any of yu guys have experience of this? I'm running a TS Farm behind a TS Gateway (all server 2008), and can't force password changes through. I've got a load of users logging onto SIMS through the above setup, and all is hunky-dory until their password expires in AD. Then they can't log on through the TS's. If I create a new user, and set the option to change password on first logon, this fails on logging on through the TS's too. As you can imagine, this compromises security - anybody know if there's a way to pass password change requests through TS? Amanda

Thanks all for a really great day - I got great insights into what everyone else was doing, and some good ideas (Woopra - have registered already!), and it was all made better by winning a netbook - and there was me thinking that I was the unluckiest person alive! Congrats to all who organised, and to all those who had the b*lls to stand up and speak in front of us motley crew. We run the same system, but have integrated it into our Moodle. I can't remember exactly which files, but you alter the php to customise the system to how you want it to look. Have a look at the php, it's fairly understandable and have a tweak until you get the result you want.

FC SAN here with a header box and two SAN arrays each with 3tb usable space. They are located disparately - one is in the server room, one is at the far side of the site and I use this for backup (gotta say, real fast backup & restores!). Brocade switch plus Fujitsu hardware - cost around £11K installed (less worries!). Twas easy to set up - dead easy actually. The hard bit was migrating the data from a few Server 2003 servers to SAN running Server 2008. Because of the differences in the way security is handled, even taking across the shares using the 'registry tweak' to restore permissions caused issues. SAN has been in operation for 5 months or so now, and not a single glitch.

Don't know if you got this sorted, but I had same issue. Capitas recommendation was to keep installing til it worked....and it eventually did, after 4 attempts and a days downtime (very very time consuming). If it happened in industry there'd be hell to pay!!!!!!!

We have decided to abandon the KS3 testing as the results from the test are not accurate for assessment purposes. If the data which results cannot be used there is little use in pupils doing the test!

I concur with Liam. Virtue Technologies are excellent - neat work, unobtrusive workmen, good price, and excellent integrated port boxes (with vid splitter) and neat amp solution.

Re: Plexer - I mistyped my original post - when you use mirroring it only seems to mirror mirror one 500Gb disk (using 1Tb total, with 1Tb redundant)

Hi Geoff, thanks for that link, but have a terastation Pro II - different firmware than the normal Pro version apparently, as Pro II latest is 1.13.

Will check out that firmware upgrade, but have upgraded to v1.13 latest already. Tried using TSII to perform backups using supplied software Memeo. Set running 7pm Friday night & was still running at 9am Monday morning - only trying to back up 200Gb. Perhaps I am expecting too much - On a measure over the network it performs at 4mbps - I would have expected 20+.

Avoid the Terastation Pro II like the plague - it advertises that it integrates with AD to use groups & users, but, quite simply, it doesn't. Network file transfer performance is also totally dire. A call to Buffalo's 'tech' support (national rate mind) proved useless, with them saying that there was something wrong with my AD (hmm...think I would have noticed before now) and that my switches and network cards needed reconfiguring (isn't it supposed to be plug&play?) Their best suggestion was to use the setup which is clearly and substantially stated in the manual as unsupported - direct connection to network card. However, even this, on a large data transfer 300Gb say, fails. I have discovered that this is only an issue when the drives are set up in RAID5 configuration, another selling feature of the box (getting the picture yet?!) However, when set up to mirror drives, only half of the capacity of the box is available (it contains 4 hard drives each 500Gb, but will only mirror two of them, giving a total capacity of 1tb). So your available options is RAID5 (terrible performance), or lose half the space. If you want performance and AD integration, suggest looking at rival Infrant. I think I'm going to use the sata drives out of the Buffalo to put in PC's. That's how much use it is.

Don't know if it's been mentioned before but Browsecontrol by Codework is cheap, effective, and can remotely turn off and on your PC's too - handy. There is a small client install + a server install. When I say cheap, I paid £400 for 300 clients and pay £95 a year maintenance on the software. Hope that helps.

Absolutely & totally agree with you - after all, a school could be compared to any small company. It's only pretty big companies like IBM, RM, HP etc., where you could climb the ladder in-house - but that would be with a lot of politicking too :-) Amanda

Well, my last technician went on to be network manager at another school, another trained as MIS consultant at the LEA. When we go into education, we know the pay isn't great - that isn't much going to change. Those who practice as support professionals just for the money go to industry - there is always that choice open to you. Been there, done it, moved backwards into education as a lifestyle choice.
