There is an S3 mini now and I would get the Nexus 4 before selling my S3 (as its got a broken screen).

I'm tempted to sell my S3 to get one of these!!

You can set it in outlook the rule, On receive. You could do it via transport but that doesn't guarantee its made it to the mailbox, just the server has received it.

Do you have any 2008 R2 domain controllers in the network? If not then you will need to run ADprep from the 2008 r2 cd on the 2008 dc. otherwise you will have all sorts of problems.

dont turn off the old one stop dhcp. If its a domain controller you will need to demote the machine.

DNS you can do during the day with the promotion of a domain controller. DHCP I would do out of hours. You also want to set the bad address check to a few incase there is a few leases outstanding. This means the server checks nothing has them before it dishes them out.

By multiple users how do you mean? A site for each user? or a single site which multiple users can upload to? IIS or Apache?

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Sophos or mcrappy! If you are only running one or 2 servers I would say a Borri rotation series 2ka will cope with all that and the switches fine.

VMware ESXI is so easy to configure for a basic setup like that (pretty much install it and away you go) - it only starts getting mega complex with multiple ISCSi devices - VCenters etc etc never used Hyper-V in anger so can't comment on that.

It seems to hint towards an issue with exchange communicating with your domain controllers (more specifically a global catalog) or just general communication. Have you tried changing your configurational domain controller?

yes but are the other dc's configured with that subnet mask? or or are you just working that out from the amount of addresses?

Do you use public folders? What I mean by service urls - is under Server Configuration Client access (i think) - you have all the tabs for OWA, EAB, OAB etc. are these urls correct.

what is the impero service to to start as? Automatic? or Automatic (delayed)

What is the Subnet mask> 255.255.255.0? 10.x.x.129-158 are in the same Subnet as anything 10.x.x.0-255 if the Subnet mask above is used, you would have to have something like 172.16.x.x with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 for them not to be able to see each other without some kind of routing.

that's not a spare subnet that's spares Ips in the same subnet.

sounds like something is very wrong - are your Domain controllers ok? anything major in the logs? are all the service urls configured correctly.

invest in the infrastructure fully managed switches, full managed wireless (I'm a Meraki fan) once that is in place then the future is adaptable to any kind of device unless somebody changes the way wireless works/ehtrrndt works!

You could do VDI and keep the existing desktops, all depends on what applications you are trying to then run. If you have ad-hoc wireless i suggest full campus wide solution.

If your looking at Hyper-V look at Veeam Backup - instantly restorable VM's (obviously slower from the nas but it works). Personally I would look at Live@EDU/Office365/GoogleApps for your email needs (all free for education AFAIK) With such a small schools I would suggest 1 x HP DL380/Dl385 G7's (for cost saving Gen 8 if needs be), with lots of local storage (8 x large sas drives). 1 x HP DL180 G6 (or ML350) with as much ram as the host above. But lots of large Sata HDD's (1TB). 10k at most the above. Put your server licenses on EES, 2012 datacenter edition is circa 100pa and you can run unlimited vm's. You can then keep the Dl180 or ML350 in a separate location from the primary server and run Veeam replicas to it along with Veeam Backups, Keeping lots of restore points. This means you can instantly boot any server up from the previous night or previous week. Meraki for Ipad Management along with Wireless if you don't already have it Total spend probably 15/16k. More then enough there to cope with the stuff you have mentioned. If needs be buy 2 x the DL380. I would push all clients to windows 7 as XP is out of support in the coming future.

if its the initial load it could well be struggling to authenticate the users and might be the DC's being slow to respond.
