That's correct about them being Students on one and Teachers on another. When you setup the CSV you have the headings of course and role so just set the course to the course you want them to be in and role to student or teacher. By doing a bulk upload with no course defined it won't enrol them on every course it will just make them users and then you can manually assign roles in a course. It will work fine this way, it will just take longer.

When you do a bulk upload and enroll them on to a course they take the default role anyway, which is Student. That being said, "role"should work fine. Try and setup the courses at the same time with the upload, will save loads of time later. Rich

Hi, I have 2 main DCs running Server 2003. I want to start testing Server 2008 and Windows 7, so would it be ok to add a Server 2008 DC onto the network and would the boxes all talk to each other happily? Or would I get loads of problems with GPO replications? Also, can anyone recommend good Server 2008r2 and Windows 7 books? Thanks Rich

I'd put the Sharepoint on a separate box personally. The basic curric server doesn't need much power for a primary school and if you need a lot of storage for the endless amount of photos that some teachers seem to take I would say get a good NAS to handle that.

We've gone from ActivePrimary to ActivInspire and had the same problem. Simple answer is no, so the teacher has to decide which one they are going to use. Rich

We are a large 3 form Primary school and have 12 access points which nicely cover the entire school. In terms of equipment we have 60 childrens laptops and 30 staff one's so on PPA day it takes a beating and still works like a charm. Can you upload a rough layout of your school and we can see how many we think you need. Rich

Can you not do Fn+F5 to output only to the external monitor? Rich

If you have the original CSV file that you imported everyone with then you can set the maildisplay field to 0 and re-import it selecting modify and that should do it. Rich

we've just bought 30 Toshiba NB200s and with trolley, software licences, 3 year warranty and imaging it came in under £13,000. Went for the netbooks due to the extra long battery life because teachers seem to find it very hard to plug them back in over lunch. Rich

Very valid point. Have just check though and yes I've set the permission on that folder and all files and folders within in to read/write.

Hi, I'm trying to get Rigolo 1 from Nelosn thornes installed on the network and it's having none of it. Have installed the software on the server in the normal apps drive so everyone can access it, have then shared the shortcut as normal. The software will then run but won't let you log on, with a really useful error message of "error loading user" and then kicks you out. It appears to be trying to read/write to an XML file with user names. If I'm logged on as an administrator it works fine, but the normal users don't have admin privileges. Anyone got any ideas or have installed this before? Cheers Rich

Hi all, I'd like to be able to intergrate our Serce Facility and AD so that when new pupils and/or staff are created it automatically creates an AD account with the relevant information. I'd then like to get Moodle to pick up on the information and create accounts accordingly. I'm sure some people already do this and was wondering how everyone else did it? Cheers Rich

We are looking into this as well and personally I think our main outlay over the next few years is going to be replacing hardware which hadn't been replaced for years before I arrived. I agree with James about the laptops totally. Having invested in a good wireless network over the summer I think we should be alright, but if you haven't done it yet then look in to it. I would also try and allow as much as possible for the best internet connection you can afford. If you have 1000 pupils at the moment and it's starting to strain just imagine what it will be like when new schools aren't built so you end up with 1500 pupils all trying to watch iPlayer and YouTube in HD ("Well it's much better at home and works fine there!" ). Does it allow you to import a CSV list of users? If it does then that might get you started, then it would just be a case of keeping it up to date with new users. Maybe write a script that updates passwords everynight? Just a thought. Rich

Just got a Tohsiba NB200, running XP but you could easily put 7 on it. Works really well and has a 7 hour battery life.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of some software that could help me create a network diagram with all the devices on the network on it that works like Google Swirl? So basically if I click on a network switch it opens that area up and show me what's connected to it, things like that.. Am I hoping for way too much? Rich
