Hi all, I've got 3 HP 2605N networked printers which all seem to have stopped printing Magenta. I think it has being slowly happening over time and it wasn't until I ran the supplies status page that you can see that it is hardly putting any toner on the page. Even the Yellow is more vivid. Any ideas as to why this might be happening and how to fix it? Cheers

As we speak I've got 76 clients connected over 15 APs but that is over a very large area. Each AP will easily handle 30 clients at a time. Peak I've ever seen is 90 but I'm running a stress test next week with all 150 machines so will see how that goes.. Yea the controller just comes with cabinet brackets and you plug it onto the network.

The position of your access points look fine, but obviously that depends on the size of the classrooms. I'm presuming they are a similar size to mine. I am also presuming the building is single story? If it is then try and put the access points on the ceiling as central in each location as possible to give the most even coverage and best range. Ruckus is simply a managed wireless system. In that you have a central controller which you configure with what ever settings you need (SID, keys etc..) and then you place an access point where you want and as long as the access points are connected to the network the information will be distributed to each of them. Pros; Simple centralised configuration, The access points will self manage power levels and channel number, each AP can handle a crazy number of clients, PoE is great if you have it. Cons; Not cheap compared to individual access points. If you currently have 350 children on role then I personally be expecting about 75 laptops for the children soon enough so make sure you get enough APs to cover that. That being said with a managed system it is very easy to add more APs. Good luck. Rich

Thanks for all the help, it's now working nicely using the network version on a startup script. Politics have now kicked in though and it's causing great fun and games, however I am only doing what the powers that be have told me to do and funilly enough everyone will have a go at me but won't go and talk to the boss... Regards the scripting; I've just used one of the sample scripts to redirect printing from the colour machine to the black and white laser printer and it works a treat, really impressed. I'm going to try and get time based conditions working now for certain users. Rich

I've got the StoryPhones and have exactly the same issue. I'm lucky though, the teacher learnt how to leave the cable unplugged until they needed them. To remedy the situation I meant to have a look in the BIOS and check the "boot from USB"was disabled. Rich

I built a Windows home Server and have found it excellent in use. Supports most things and has a reasonable community building extra software for it. You could download a 3 month free trial, not sure if you still can, and try it on your own box.

Hi all, I'm trying to get printing costs under control and so have got PaperCut on trial as it seems very popular. I've got the server side running no problem, all users and printers are setup just fine to start with, but I want to get the client side program pushed out silently for all teaching staff and I can' figure out how to do it. I've tried putting "cmd /c "start \\servername\PCClient\win\pc-client-local-cache.exe --silent"" in the GPo of UserConfig -> Admin -> System ->Logon - >Run these programs at user logon, but it then displays the full install prompts and asks for credentials. This might be ok for the teachers but certainly not for when we deploy it for the kids. How does everyone else do this and am I just being thick as usual in deploying this? Cheers Rich

Well done! I'd frame that and put it on the wall so whenever you get someone ranting at how useless it all is you can look at that and remind yourself that you are doing a good job.

What sort of info are you looking for? A read on the respective websites provides loads of info and they are both very quick and easy to sign up for. It's the configuring part which can take some time. They both allow you to use your own domain. In fact I think you have to have your own domain because you have to prove you own it by chaning the MX records (that's what Live@Edu needs anyway). Live@Edu Google Apps for Education. I presume you already have your own domain?

Why not use Google Apps or Microsoft Live@Edu, both free for educational use and don't require the purchase or provison of hardware.

fil_b the BGFL are going to support a single sign on that they are developing which I think is part of the SIF program. I've been asking about this for a long time as well because as we stand now we have logons for the pc, email, e-portal and moodle and all of them are more than capable of having SSO. I have also heard that they are working on a single AD scheme for all brum schools to be part of. Rich

I don't see how thats controversial. The author is mearly stating the fact that the current generation of students are very used to IT and therefore teaching methods should try and improve to adopt that. It's something I've heard many time but the main problem is lack of IT knowledge by some teachers and it is not just the older generation of teachers. In fact a lot of our NQTs (early 20somethings) have a very poor grasp of IT and how to teach it where as some of the, shall we say, more establised teachers are a lot more interested in how it can be used to further the childrens learning by making it more interesting and relevant to them. Just my 2p

I've not managed to find a VGA or HDMI to Component convertor, if you do then please let me know. To play back the files in the simplest form you would just need them on the PC in the relevant folders (photos in photos, music in music etc) then when you start Media Centre (built into Windows Vista/7 Home Premium) then it will find them and allow you to play them. You can then start to look at bigger and better systems, so attaching TV tuners to the Media Centre, using a Windows Home Server and so on and so forth. Some great plugins for WMC is Mymovies and Media Browser. Have fun

It's reasonably quick, obviously not as fast as a full desktop but then it uses a fraction of the power. If budget allows then the dual core and more RAM will be quicker so go for it.
