Unless you are working in an independent school, you will need, at the very least a PGCE...and I may be wrong (havent checked the link supplied)but you need an appropriate degree before you commence that. Personally, I would lay down your intentions to your head and see what they say. It should at least show them commitment and they may even help you on your way in terms of costs. I think though (and not wishing to put a dampener on things) you would be looking at longer than 4 years before you qualify as a teacher and you shouldnt expect to walk straight into a co-ordinator role from teacher training

If there is nothing in the clients event log then there is clearly an issue elsewhere - the evnt log would confirm that a GPO has been applied successfully or whether an issue has occurred I've never had to set the loopback mechanism for software distrubution so i dont think its that Have you run the "test the policy" routine from GPMC?

I would suggest that rather than looking at this from a technical perspective, that you in conjunction with your SMT rejig (create?) your AUP and get parents / students to sign it Staff do find it useful (as do the kids) to be able to email each other but its on the basis that it remains professional - so far, having a decent AUP stops any sort of messing. I would also suggest that seeing as the email wont be anonymous that you simply lock their accounts - i apologise if that sounds like im trying to teach you to suck eggs, but i think something needs hammering down! (even if there was a way to hide the lists, kids are savvy enough to simply copy a list of email addys and then paste them into the to: box!)

It is perhaps the worst installation i've ever come across. And its not purely E-Science - all other "E" discs are the same What I ended up doing was creating an ISO image of the disc and storing that on a server. Then depending on the number of licences we owned, installed Daemon Tools on the required workstations, installed the software from the iso image and then it ran quite happily without any need for the CD to be in the drive.

Whats the firmware version of the Terastation? I'm on 1.03 which doesnt seem to have any of the ADS settings; however, it works absolutely fine on my W2K3 domain The only thing I had to play around with was ensuring that DNS / WINS settings were correct.....

Office and SIMS can be funny partners in crime - as well as the suggestions pointed out above, it may also be worth checking the permissions on the TEMP folders and the OFFICE folder on the actual machine; SIMS.net does require you to have write permissions to these (have a word with your helpdesk!) Is there any possibility you can export the report and post it here - rest assured none of your school data will come across, only the report template - doing this may help "us" see where the fault may lie

Hi Chris Judging by the fact that it is a domain based network, i'm guessing that its a Windows based server - but perhaps a few more details are needed - NT4, 2000, 2003? There are certainly loads of things I could advise, but a lot depends on the "flavour" of your current server!

Are you saying that the event logs didnt even mention the fact that it had stopped, or that it did say they stopped but nothing else? Is there anything else on your network thats trying to handle DNS requests?

I dont think the programme did itself any favours by showing the person who experienced radiation sickness (now known as BacoFoil Woman) but i'm amazed by the number of folk who are 100% ignoring the fact that there may be something in it - and I stress the words "may" and "something" I'm a huge fan of Wifi - dont get me wrong, but it is a relatively new technology / science and we have no way (at the moment) of knowing the long term effects. Being the shortsighted ICT geek that I am, people often ask why I dont have laser correction when thousands say how great it is. The simple answer I give is that we need to see the long term effects after a generation of people have been and gone. Who's to say that in 40 years time the people who have had laser surgery simply go blind- we simply dont know. The same reasoning needs to apply here - there is obviously heavy research going into this bourne of concern for the health of everyone. If you want to ignore it then its your choice.

Typical really, we had a mass clearout of gear a few years ago, including all these Acorn machines that we would NEVER use again.... .... and now we actually need a BBC B / Master to retrieve some plotter code from a 40track disc !!! Not going down the ebay path (just yet) but is anyone willing to donate (or even sell at the right price) a working machine with a disc drive? I know someone had 30 odd machines they were chucking a few years ago but i doubt they still have them! Fingers crossed!!!

Faza - how are you getting on? IMHO the whole thing sounds like a group policy issue - apologies if this seems a like a "sucking eggs" scenario but have you (a) checked that your pcs are in the correct OU that the policy is being applied to (top level?) It may be worth (i) creating a separate policy for WSUS and then (ii) applying it to a separate OU eg / ict suite first (b) does your policy point at the WSUS server? Is the IP address / server name correct?

We are finding that installing VLC on workstations seems to suit everyones needs - from DVDs to old Chemistry software which needs old Indeo codecs

I was very tempted until I heard that the whole Sky broadband infrastructure was incredibly flaky - and this was down to the fact that they'd "inherited" a load of old equipment rather than implementing brand spanking new systems

Have you tried somewhere like Pugh? They do the Staff / Student scheme for Microsoft products
