  1. You can create two different group policy's, specifying the windows updates settings in each - one to point to wsus and another to point to windows update. Then apply each gpo to seperate containers. This may involve re-organizing your AD computers a bit.
  2. Hello, We have had a problem for a while now were staff members are trying to play DVD's through their interactive boards. Often the voices will be very quiet while the other sounds are a good volume. Many of the laptops have DVD software installed (windvd, k-lite codec pack etc). Has anybody had this problem? So many staff have this problem, I don't know why they are playing so many films anyway.... Thanks
  3. We use Sophos AV on our macs which is available from our LA.
  4. Hello, We have a windows server 2008 network. We have a small suite of macs which we have successfully integrated into active directory for single sign on and home folder access. However one problem we have noticed is that none of our macs have a DNS record on our DNS server. All the macs seem to be working fine but we cannot work out why they do not create a dns record. I have also done a host lookup on them all and they find the correct dns server. All network settings are specified such as domain name, dns servers etc. Has anybody had this problem? Thanks
  5. Hello, We are having some strange issues with our thin clients which connect via rdp to a terminal server. The problems are mostly web browsing with IE and its protected mode. Can anybody provide me with a standard gpo for a terminal server for reference to ours. Thanks
  6. Thanks for your reply. Didn't think is was possible but was just wondering. How secure is the certificate option? Do you have any links to point me in the direction of setting it up? Thanks.
  7. Hi all, I have been trying to send wireless settings via GPO to client machines. I have been able to add various wireless profiles for XP and Vista but neither allow me to enter a wireless network key. I have been going to: Computer > policies > windows settings > security settings > wireless network 802.11 policies. Any ideas? I am trying to do this so we don't have to manually add wireless settings and often the settings get altered and users can't connect. Thanks
  8. Hello, I am trying to edit the picture and info that can appear in the system properties window. I have created a picture called oemlogo.bmp and saved it in C:\windows\system32. it is 172x114. I have also created a INI file called oeminfo.ini which contains: # [General] # Manufacturer="TEXT YOU WANT" # Model="TEXT YOU WANT" # [support Information] # line1="ATC Doha" # line2="DOha-Qatar" # line3="TEXT YOU WANT" # line4="TEXT YOU WANT" Am I missing something? Thanks
  9. Hey, I have successfully binded a iMac to our server 2008 AD. However when I login to a domain account it starts to login then brings up the rainbow circle thing for loading, and nothing happens or it takes ages to login (20 - 60 mins). The imac is running os 10.5.8. We also have 10.4.11 emacs which are working fine. The way in which I have added the imac is as follows: Directory utility > services > AD and configure icon > AD domain = ourdomain.ac.uk > administrative > allow admin by ticked > and then binded and restarted. Is there anything I have done wrong here? Thanks for any help.
  10. sorry not sure where you mean exactly, can you elaborate? Thanks
  11. What do you mean in group policy auth of gpo?
  12. No everyone does not have read and execute permissions. I will add it and try it. Does it also need to be in share permissions? Thanks.
  13. I have pointed the software directly in the gp (\\server\share\java\java.msi). What do you mean about mapping the drive? I will try assigning the software on a XP pc. Thanks.
  14. Hello, I am having trouble installing msi files to computers using group policy. I have created a partition on the domain controller which stores all msi installation files in folders for each software (e.g. F:\java\java.msi) and the drive is shared with domain admins = full control. Security permissions also have domain admins = full control and the rest are defaults. When I assign an msi file in gp and assign that gp to the OU, the computers usually see the file when they restart, (installing managed software...) but then goes off straight away and does not install anything. Basically, can anyone tell me if I'm going wrong somewhere, perhaps permissions wise... Thanks for any help.
  15. Hello, We are having a problem with staff being able to access their files offsite. Their home drives are setup to be sync'd and sync at log on/off, which all seems to run fine. Got a few staff (so far) that are unable to open their files when offline, what happens is they can still access their home drive and see the files/folders but when they go to open a file a message appears saying 'access denied. contact your administrator'. Anyone seen this before? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  19. Hello, We have upgraded to server 2008 this summer on our terminal servers. The problem is when a user logs into a thin client it changes their home folder from their username to documents. We can see which student it is by looking at permissions. Anyone know why this is happening? Thanks.

    cacls

Hello, I have been trying to re-apply user permissions on home folders by using cacls and have done the following script: cacls d:\sf_user /g user:f This works fine however I have 2 issues: 1. It asks to confirm each line of the script as I have more than 1 folder to do. 2. It replaces the inherited permissions with the new one. Can anybody help with this? Thanks.
  21. Hi, So here's the thing, our science dept bought about 10 acer extensa 5210 laptops a year ago for standalone use. They now wish for them to be added to the network, so we have been looking at them and thought we'd image them using ghost. The problem is most of them have a bios password that was most likely made by a student due to the science dept not securing them... :] Anybody know any ways of resetting the bios passwords on laptops? Usually move the cmos chip or take out the battery on a desktop, but taking all the laptops apart is a bit of a job. Thanks.

  23. Hey, Is it possible to create a batch or vbs script to defrag xp machines from a server? Does anybody know how to do this? Thanks
  24. Hey, We have a windows server 2003 network and have 20 macs running os 10.4. I have successfully been able to add them to active directory and users can log on. However my next problem is 'restricting' them down for users, such as no access to system preferences etc. We have a mac server running os 10.5 and I have configured open directory on it. I can also see active directory in the workgroup manager too. When in the local open directory I have set up I have created a group, set some preferences but am unable to add users from AD. When in active directory I have tried to set preferences but I could not save them. Has anybody done anything like this before, am I going about this the wrong way? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
