Things you'd never hear on a film about computers
Rydra replied to Hightower's topic in General Chat
Transformers... Captain Witwicky was commissioned to a mental hospital, after he discovered a giant robotic man under the ice. He kept muttering something about fatal error with navigation systems, and talking gibberish in hex code. -
Your "last minute spend" is more than I have to spend on my entire budget for the year

I sorta left a job, but they will decide it happened otherwise. I'd worked in a PC repair centre (based in the retail/EPOS industry) for 2 years, when they decided that they wanted the centre to move to shift work. While earning 12k a year, working 9-5, they were planning to change to 3 days 8-6, 3 nights 2-10, with 3 days off, plus oweing them 50 extra hours of overtime above those hours, which I did not control, and the 'compensation' was about £550 a year. I refused the change in contracts, so they made my redundant, with no redundancy pay. But, they did tell me to leave at the end of the week, and continue to pay me for 3 more, and 6 weeks after than I got a job earning more as a contractor. Earn about the same money now as I was contracting then, the difference is I no longer have a boss who I had a mutual hatred with. I get offered jobs in that industry about once a month, but refuse to listen beyond the word "EPOS". It's an awful line of work, fixing computers that have ciggie burns in, half a pint of guiness poured down the back, and at least twice, filled with beer + cement dust, working all hours of the day, for little money, and often involves a load of travelling.

not to mention, how sensitive are they for transmitting the data, and is there any encryption on the tags it transfers, so it can only be transferred to pokens (and legitimate ones) not just some guy with an rf scanner. I think these are a trully horrible idea in a school environment, kids don't need more ways for random people to get eachothers contact details.

I have spent the week writing new gpo's for computers, students, printing, new logon scripts etc. Went to test it for the first time last night before I went home; and my new student policy has the My Documents restricted Now to go back and try again!

If you don't have a BlueRay player + HD TV already, PS3; because once you've had HD movies on the thing, you wont want to go back to DVD's! Also, i've found the PS3 better for the media console. The XBox has the better online system for friends and online gameplay, but the PS3's online services are free. Plus, you can upgrade the hard drive in a PS3 yourself (though I hear the new slim models have had this ability removed?) whereas the xbox is a bit of a bugger to do that, or you have to buy one of the official ones/use a USB one. I prefer more games on the xbox, but I barely ever use it the xbox, I game on the PC. The PS3 gets used as a media/dvd/blue ray player more often than anything else.

Ok strange question here, but is anyone here ACTUALLY tempted to try this procedure and apply for starting an independant school? Though I wouldn't want to be a HT, the idea of building a school on my own principles and with a blank slate does appeal somewhat. And they do state, that parents should have a chance/say in how these spring up? Why not someone who has worked in the background of education for X years, and is at least to some degree, paid to keep up with the latest advances in technology and education?

A mate of mine is getting married later in the year, and we don't know where his stag do will be yet, but the rumour is his best man is looking at Amsterdam. A place reknowned for sex, drugs and drinking (among other things), and he wants to take a guy who doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs, and is getting married...

The woolies store in Milton Keynes was available up till recently. That would have been perfect! Burger King directly opposite, the big hall just next door for PE, 2 multiplex cinema's, and a waterstones just round the corner.

I'd love to know how this scheme is actually going to work... So I can apply to start up a free school, get the government to buy some old shop/commercial space (There's a business park not far from me, with an office block that's mostly been empty for years), spend millions converting it, hire a bunch of mates, and start teaching children?

Tannoy system: "Can John Smith please come to the Main Office by aisle 3 please..."

Because, as with home viewers, if something happens where the audience didn't laugh, and they meant it as a joke, they need to make it clear. otherwise people might sue them or write nasty letters about how the emergency services are not going private, or how slanderous it would be for a masseuss (SP?) to kiss you on the bottom.... But yes, this weeks one was poor tbh. Jen's toad of a boyfriend was not like her character (since she's quite shallow, and he literally looked like a toad). Moss had too much confidence, and Roy would not normally do anything that required being in public or anything that took effort. Street countdown was epic, though the matrix countdown guy was lame and made little sense. It was only put in to appease a few more geeks. Oh and robot hand/spaceology was just ????? My favourite is looking at the different stuff they have in their office, and Roy's t shirts.

Senior Technician - Doing the Network Manager job
Rydra replied to chazzy2501's topic in General Chat
Bah, I hate it when employers do this. have you doing someone else's job, then when you point it out to them, decide they cannot afford to pay you for doing said job. Nowadays, it seems they don't replace people when they leave; they bring in someone else, pay them a fraction of what their predecessor, then if it's an internal placement, they bring in a new, even lower paid person to fill the whole. I've seen/heard of this happening in at least 4 schools in my area in recent times, where the NM left, they promote a techie to senior, and employ a monkey as a techie to replace. -

Office space is a commodity that all aspire for. So when you get some, make sure you fill it with as much as humanly possible, the more indistinguishable and unidentifiable it is, the less likely you are to have it taken from you. Always leave at least one route that requires minimal scaling/climbing for a swift exit at the end of the day. -
Pointless Poll: How long will my knee last in football?
Rydra replied to Rydra's topic in General Chat
The answer is: none of the above. I'm not allowed to help with the club. See BTRD for more info and a proper rant. -
Pointless Poll: How long will my knee last in football?
Rydra replied to Rydra's topic in General Chat
Though I can see how it could be really annoying, A month stuck at home being waited on every night by the wife does have a certain appeal. I couldn't work where I am now with that sort of layup, I cannot actually stretch my legs out without kicking the wall (office is not even 6ft by 4ft!) -

Is that where they make it so you can walk backwards? (Only messing, hope all goes well!) -

Pointless Poll: How long will my knee last in football?
Rydra replied to Rydra's topic in General Chat
No, it's the back of the knee, the tendon-y bit on the back. Though if my knee keeps clicking tonight I'll start to wonder who swapped my knee cap for castinettes! -

Pointless Poll: How long will my knee last in football?

Miscellaneous teacher #51 from the other team caught me in a tackle, and knee tried to bend at right angles to the way it should do. Heskey wouldn't be able to keep up with me, he runs out of energy by the time he reaches top speed -

I lef that behind at the weekend, just after the match where i tried to walk upstairs to get changed, and collapsed But i thought "You'll be fine! Get going soldier!" fitted this description -
I started assisting with the school's football team/training last week, and then played a friendly against another school's teaching staff. Managed to ruin my knee, took me 3 days to be able to walk properly again, either a twist or sprain I think. This morning i can feel it twinging again. So how long will it last with a 1 hour football training tonight!??!

If these jokes continue, we'll end up with some very inflated ego's...
