  1. We had Spiceworks running and it caused that symptom - lots of "who has x IP address" etc requests.
  2. Chuck a terminal server in and make them thin client.
  3. Or something from here Perfect present picker : Oxfam Unwrapped : Oxfam's Online Shop
  4. If it's just an OS password why not whip the disk out, connect it to your PC via a USB caddy and format it?
  5. I was going to say that
  6. I tend to charge the same - £25 to £30 an hour. I also just do parts at cost.
  7. I used to live in Chadderton then Bacup. Was IT Manager at Hopwood Hall College for 4 years.
  8. @john - Kendal is ok but does have a higher chav content than people imagine for a nice area like this! BTW how's the new job going?
  9. Certainly not - Zak seems like a very respectable young fellow to me (even if he does live in Rochdale) @Zak - only joking mate - I used to live and work in that area.
  10. Not sure the chavs bother with that bit.....
  11. And annoying!
  12. Got to agree with others here - I hardly notice them.
  13. Please just promise us you won't have a corsa or saxo with a stupid body kit or a stereo that is so loud it makes everyone's ears bleed in a 2 mile radius. It's not big and it's not clever!
  14. We have leased lots of kit without any problem. We didn't have to involve the LEA at all when we did it. At the end of the lease we just hand the kit back or buy it for a peppercorn price. We are keeping the old kit and thin clienting it now. We took the lease 'cos it meant we could spend lots of cash in one go and get a large amount of kit. The downside is that means it is all old and potentially obselete at the same time.
  15. Well done Zak.
  16. Inset days Monday and Tuesday so that's delivering new staff induction and SIMS training for me. Year 7 on Wednesday so that's a mass photo session then business as usual after that. Few staff in today so had a bit of a catch up and sorted some timetable stuff out. Knock a few user accounts up tomorrow for staff and Year 12 students. Think I may have Friday off. So far a nice start but we all know how quickly that can change!
  17. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of using this HP Wireless Edge Services Module for ProCurve Switch ZL Series J9051A HP J9051A - HP ProCurve Wireless Edge Svs zl Mod (Software Network Management) in their ZL switch. I am thinking it could be a good way to get us a managed wireless solution as we already have the core switch. Any experience or thoughts please? Cheers
  18. OK - If you go to routines - Lesson Monitor - OMR entry you should be able to print and read sheets from there. I'm pretty sure it still puts the AM/PM marks in the right place even though it says lesson monitor.
  19. Not sure what you mean by removed - both systems work through a common interface and access route now. You can tick a box to view sessions or sessions and lessons.
  20. I was head of IT in a college a while back before I downshifted and moved to the lakes and this school. Mind you I think I would be a better one now at 40 than I was at 27 when I did it last just because I have a more balanced view now.
  21. I disagree. I am 40 and don't have an MCSE or anything like. Last week I was offered a job as Head of IT in a large FE college based on experience and understanding of educational IT. As it happens I turned it down as I decided I actually quite like where I am. I think it largely depends on the person not the qualifications or age.
  22. Just to put another point of view - I took a massive paycut to move to my current school 8 years ago because I wanted to change lifestyle. My salary now is still less than I would be earning if I'd stayed at the college I was at, however (and this is the important thing) I now get 9 to 11 weeks off a year, a salary that I can live on reasonably well and live in the Lake District, allowing me to kayak, climb and walk pretty much whenever I want. Also I get involved in directing drama productions, outdoor pursuits weeks and weekends etc. - none of which I would get in an LEA job. Sure you have to pay the bills but there is so much more to working in a school than just the job you are employed to do and that whole package may be a good reason for the OP to want to get back into it. I wouldn't call schools IT an easy ride but it can be a very rewarding one.
  23. Thanks to all those who replied. It was indeed STP being enabled on all ports out of the box. Turned that off and all was well again.

    I'm pregnant

Congratulations. Your boss (hopefully) will know better than to say anything other than the same. As others have said - mat leave is your right. It may be a PITA for him but it is the law!
