For real!!!??? I have a Dell Windows reinstall disc for Windows XP Home Edition hanging around here along with other various recovery/repair/reinstall disc from other pc manufacturers. I'm going to try the one from Dell and see if that'll work.

I'd like to help a friend of mine recover Windows XP Home Edition on his machine since he doesn't have the discs to do so. I have a purchased copy of Windows XP Home Edition and was wondering if I can let him use my disc with him using the Windows XP Home Edition product key that's sticked on the back of his pc. I ask because my guy saw Ubuntu on my machine and wanted to try it out since he saw me doing doing some tricks with the Compiz desktop effects to make it look a bit flashy. I showed him the various distros Linux has and he felt comfortable with Kubuntu since it's interface is kind of looks like Windows. The thing is tho that he hasn't gotten the hang of it entirely and complains about not understanding the terminal and permission problems he comes across with files, and wants XP back since he didn't partition the installment to have both OSs. Another reason I ask is because I know Sony is, how do I say?..... picky, about their machines. My guy told me his reinstallment process consisted of 3 VAIO recovery CDs that apparently carried the installment of Windows XP within them. And so I'm now I'm wondering if the key on the back of his machine is only workable for a Sony based installment of Windows(using Sony's distributed recovery disc, nothing else[they can be strict like that]), or if it can be used with any cd of the same Windows OS. Can it work?

I've been trying to access the advanced options for AWARD BIOS on my SONY VAIO ever since I inevertably came across them one time after I rebooted my machine after it seemingly overheated. I noticed when I turned on my PC shortly afterwards when I went into setup that I had a lot more options this time around and wanted to know why I had more options and why I can't access them anymore.

The Conduit is a fps game for the Wii who's developers are promising a lot out of the game, and according to previews I've read in the past, they seem to be delivering and some more!!! So I'm just wondering if there's any new info on the bad ass game!!! Haven't heard of it? you can also reset password by opening up a new notepad sheet, typing @echo off net administrator* and save as a .bat file. Open the .bat file and do your thing. Of course tho, it all depends on whether I can get in or not.

Solution remembered and am back online on Windows!!! What a newb I am. I can't believe I forgot about the other step to fixing the issue. All you have to do for if the machine can't grab an i.p. is... 1. search for the file 'tcpip.sys' - results will show 5 or so files named 'tcpip' - 2 of the results(both will be named 'tcpip.sys') will be from a recent modified date while the other 3(named 'tcpip.sys.original') will be from a much earlier date 2. delete the two recent 'tcpip.sys' files 3. rename the 'tcpip.sys.original' files to 'tcpip.sys' 4. uninstall the NIC Ethernet adapter - Start > right click My Computer > properties > click Hardware tab > Device Manager > Network Adapters > right click NIC Ethernet Adapter and uninstall 5. reboot - when Windows restarts, it'll detect NIC Adapter as 'New Hardware found' and will install 6. go online!!!

I have a laptop my friend gave to me which was a workstation at a Motorola campus, and my friend lost the Password to the main user profile that used the workstation and made a pass for Administrator that he forgot, essentially locking himself out or anyone elset trying to log in as administrator. So I was thinking,...... Can't I also borrow a copy of Windows Professional from my brother or someone who I know has it on CD and install it using the cd boot-up method and the Windows Professional key that's under the laptop?

Actually 3rd hand. My friend gave me an IBM laptop not to long ago that came from his job at Motorola when they were giving some workstation laptops away to employees to take home when they were upgrading their workstations throughout the Motorola campus. He said he barely used it a few times and had somehow lost the login and password, which I guess made it easier for him to hand it down. So I figured since I like to think I know how to move around computers, I'd take it off his hands. I was wrong, as I never bypassed the login despite using various methods and cracks etc I had used before that did work on other machines I'd been ask to bypass login due to dumb admin mistakes. what I think my friend did was make a dumb password he couldn't remember for Administrator login and more or less locked himself out. Some cracks I have on disk that need to run on cd boot-up in order to fix, always get hung up on the boot-up and I just power the thing off. I would like to get that laptop going with Ubuntu and give it to my girlfriend who wants one DESPERATLEY, just to go on MySpace & PerezHilton.com http://www.systemwars.com/forums/images/smilies/sad.gif So I'm wondering if I can install Ubuntu through DOS on an .iso image cd with the installation on it using the cd boot-up method, as you would with trying to reinstall Windows Professional by cd(which I do nt have) in order to start fresh and not be on a server domain. Ubuntu 8.04 is on a partion and I get to choose from Windows or Ubuntu when the pc boots up

Yea I've already tried the Winsock Repair tool and tried resetting it manually, but just as with trying to uninstall and reinstall the Ethernet adapter, no luck yet. I'm just confused what could've cause the corruption(I'll call it that for now) between the time that I didn't reboot to complete Ubuntu's installation till after I rebooted. I'm thinking I might have to uninstall Ubuntu

I read the threads I thought would be relative to my situation, so if my question has been answered already, my apologies. Well, I downloaded and installed Ubuntu OS on my machine, just to try it out. It seems like a cool and easy operating to navigate through, and so far I like what I see and am able to do it with it. Problem is, while Ubuntu is able to go online, Windows is incapable of it now. Going into the CMD prompt and doing IPCONFIG brings up "Unable to Query Host Name". My friend and I had this problem and I was able to fix it by uninstalling the Ethernet NIC adapter and letting Windows reinstall upon reboot. This time however, that solution seems to be a futile attempt, and right now I'm on Ubuntu trying to sort this out. What happened to Windows online capability when I installed Ubuntu, and how can I get Windows to work online again? Sorry if similiar problem has already been addressed and thanks!!!

Yea I'llbe sure to try that once I get there. I'll end up taking my laptop there to be able to use online while I try and help. Thanks a bunch!!!

right. It's been like that for the past week. I havent been to his house yet today, but he called me just now to ask if I can find out online or ask on forums if there's a way around this. It all happened because one of my friends other friend had accidentally tripped over the power surge and accidentally pulled it out of the power socket, disconnecting PC - Modem - Printer etc. When he plugged everything back in and attempted to continue roaming the net, it wouldn't allow him, so I try to ipconfig/ all, and then we got msg about "Unable to query host name". I heard of Winsock tool and various other methods that I have saved as possible solutions.

Sup guys!? My friend's ipconfig says "Unable to query host name. Contact M$ blah blah blah" when trying to pull up an i.p. How can I help him get across this problem?

I've tried Oph, ERD and number of other boot bypassers, but all of em get hung up on the blackscreen after choosing boot from CD. http://www.systemwars.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif Apart from that, I've tried Safe Mode. Only thing is that when I do that, there is no Administrator account as you would see in this log in, http://www.pcguide.com/byop/diagrams/figure150.png The login on the laptop is more like this, http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/teams/cbe/images/winlogon.JPG So I have no Admin login option to click, but I do erase the default user name and type in Administrator and leave password blank, but it says the password doesn't match. Normally there really wouldnt be a password right, but I'm guessing Motorola or whoever put a pass on Admin, and that haults me from doing the Safe Mode bypass. I figured I got the hook up with a old(IBM Thinkpad) but free laptop and use it to my advantage. Oh well. The idea of having a legit(so to speak) free laptop was nice, but maybe this is to much trouble to go through. Holla back if you can.
