That's strange - we have vertical tutor groups here, but it shows different attendance figures for each year group. Do you have vertical teaching groups as well?

Personally, I think some kind of a-priori measure would be a good idea, but a three-year old one is crazy. Nothing stays still for three years in education!

@SouthCoastSaint it's going to work that way for the first few years, and then the plan is to work on historical data, so you know where you are in advance. It'll have to be on the current year's data to start with, though, as a lot of schools don't have a curriculum designed for Progress 8 at the moment...

You could schedule (or part-schedule) it manually, so that the double-lessons occur at different times; another way would be to use the "facility" feature, so that only one class can have a double at a time. You'll need to unbuild the block to do this if it's been scheduled now.

A lot of the time, if you want to check the timetable it's actually safer to do an extract from sql - that way, you know you're looking at what's actually in the system!

Most of our analyses are built around progress (KS3/4) or value-added (KS5), and on changes from one data point to the next. Average grade does have a place, though, in a way: it's published in the performance tables, so it is something you have to look at. Generally speaking, if you're taking averages, it's more useful to have an average of distance-to-target/VA estimate/progress measure, than it is to take an average grade. Percentiles and confidence intervals tend not to be helpful in small cohorts, especially for individual subjects at A level unless you're in a large sixth-form college. One good way of showing summaries of numbers/percentages of students above/at/below target (or value-added, etc) is to use a staggered bar chart (have a look at this for a good example How to Make a Diverging Stacked Bar Chart in Excel | Evergreen Data ) I know everyone wants to know things like A*-C%, etc, but they don't have any context to the information, so aren't an indicator of effectiveness. Even in the highest-performing of schools, comparison of progress/value-added against national will always give you more of a handle on how much impact a school/subject/teacher has on students' learning, and they're also (I think) the best way to identify students who need extra support/

I don't think it's due out yet - it's not unknown for it to be Feb/March time. I'm wondering where it will show up; best guess is either on http://tableschecking.education.gov.uk/ or through the new EFA document exchange at http://sa.education.gov.uk/

It's calculated more like progress 8, in terms of the "predict a value from the prior attainment" formula. The ready-reckoner they produced only calculates from Average Points, rather than factoring in the difference for English and Maths. It's unlikely to be substantially different in its key nature though. You should be able to download the VA pupil data from one of the RAISE online reports, so you can get precise details of which pupil has what value-added. To be honest, it's good to have the info handy and together, but I've been inspected six times in as many years and have yet to meet an inspector who would want to delve that far into the maths of it all! The main thing you could look to get from it, is whether you can identify specific students who had a disproportionate impact because of external factors. Depends on what the inspection team are like though. Good luck!

@cct72 - the coefficients are different, but the method looks the same to me, on a quick scan of the ready reckoner. The methodology did change, but I've not seen anything to suggest the ready reckoner is going anywhere near progress 8. The figures I can see are all old-style best-8 points.

Although the raw attainment and "expected progress" percentages can change with the altered grades, you may not see as much change as you'd hope in the value-added stuff once that goes through. This is because, although your value-added goes up because of the higher re-mark results, the national average also goes up because of everyone else's!

Has anyone else spotted Target Setting for Current Year 7 pupils on RAISEOnline? It says Oddly, it directs you to the Progress 8 technical guidance for information on calculating Prog8. That document just says APS is a mean of English and Maths at KS2. This makes it sound like something's missing, or that there are plans to use a different measure in future for KS2 APS. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Superhuman? That's weird, as I've found you can calculate the estimates as well as the attainment scores in a SIMS marksheet. it's illy, really, considering that FFT is produced by the company that calculates progress8 anyway...

RAISEOnline for KS4 is out now! That's the good news. The bad news, is that everyone is probably trying to get on it now (they posted 9am as the release time), which would explain why it's suddenly stopped working! Managed to get a good chunk of stuff off it before it went under though
