PSFCloud - a nightmare I never seem to wake from.
mwnci replied to Olliesaurus's topic in Cloud Services
Yes, we have had problems over the last year or 2 particularly around intermittent drop outs. The connection at our end was very stable and eventually a policy change on their server cluster seemed to help the issue. We would get the window showing that the RDP connection had dropped, followed by a looped attempt to reestablish the connection. Very poor. I note that SCOMIS offer a hosted PSF solution. As a user of their hosted SIMS platform, I can confirm that that is solid, so the PSF solution may be a good alternative to PSFCloud. -
A agree that the issue is firstly a management issue. The biggest issue is mobile devices and notifications - if you have your account set up and have notifications turned on... you know the rest. We can have a policy regarding when to allow emailing, but sometimes flexibility and pragmatism is required. Staff need to know how to effectively use their mobile devices to limit their exposure to work emails when they want and allow them access when they want. And this is where the technical element comes in.

Hi, I'm sure many of you are all too familiar with the culture of staff emailing in the evening at weekends. We are having a look at how this affects the wellbeing of staff and there are quite a few studies (Here and Here) that confirm that the effect is not positive. We are looking to reduce the number of work emails that are sent and read in the evening. In order for this to work, there needs to be buy in from senior leaders. Assuming that this in place, what practical measures can be put in place to support this? We use Office 365 email, and although I don't want an outright block on emails sent out of hours, I want to provide some technical solutions to staff to help limit their exposure to emails. Any ideas?

I've taken a look at DLP, but have wondered how useful the built in filters are for us in education. Most of the sensitive data that we will send would be data such as pupi/staff names and information about them. Has anyone got any examples of how DLP has been used effectively? -
Hi all, I'm looking for a new team member. Ideally someone with plenty of educational experience who fancies a challenge and would like to get out and about dealing with lots of different schools. Planning to use this with an 80/20 EoFTTC connection. A max of 30-40 users at peak times. Not internal routing as such, but we will be using the RED functionality for some cross site traffic with a a bit of AD and Auth traffic. Using one of the stock policies for Intrusion Prevention. One of our suppliers say they have secondaries running on 210 units, and that this is well within their capacity. We will not be running the email or web server protection options at all, as all of this is hosted off site. We've been looking at less than a £1000 for the 135... It seems Sophos have a reputation for overspecking.

In the process of choosing a Sophos UTM device for a smallish primary school (250 pupils). One supplier has told us that a 135 XG unit will be perfectly adequate. Sophos themselves have suggested larger 210 (and more expensive) unit. The online product comparison is useful, but I would be interested to hear from anyone out there with experience of these devices to see how well they perform.

Disaster Recovery Horror Stories - Have you got one?
mwnci replied to L3OUGH's topic in General Chat
We were doing some testing regarding this a couple of weeks ago. We restored the backup to different hardware but of course the OS would not boot. We then inserted the relevant windows DVD and ran a windows repair and it worked leaving us with a fully functioning backup on entirely different hardware. Test it out on your backups and see what happens. -

Legend. Pressing Alt whilst right clicking changes the option from unsupervise to remove.

We have several ipads which have been stolen. They were supervised using configurator. How do you get about removing these from configurator seeing as we can't plug them in. Any ideas?

Has anyone else had a play with the new Office 365 groups feature? I've uploaded some files to the shared file area, but can I delete or rename them ? No There seems to be no option anywhere. I am an admin in the group. Am I being daft?

Ok, thanks all for your replies. We purchased the Chromebooks from a reseller - can we still get our management licences from Google? Trying to get in contact with their sales department has proved somewhat difficult. We did receive a reply from one rep, but the phone numbers don't work and replying to his email returns a mailbox does not exist error - odd!

Just about to purchase some Chromebook management licences. Been quoted for some 3 yr licences at about £28. Is that any good? Alternatively can we buy perpetual licences? Supplier says no...

I've got an iPad 2 which has been subject to a full Erase all Contents and Settings. The question is can I find out when this took place? I have been taking a look at a few forensic tools. The iPad is not jailbroken and I don't really want to go down that route.
