I have taken on several University placement students for their year in industry. We always interviewed candidates, and weren't under any pressure to take on the first person to come in through the door. Maybe I've been very lucky, but all those that we have taken on have been very good and a real addition to the team. We had a good relationship with the comp sci dept at a nearby university. We approached a couple of other uni's but the quality of candidates was nowhere near as good, so maybe that is something to look out for. Worth shopping around.

I'm waiting for the dual core version to become available. Any idea when that is likely to be?

I was planning to put in cat5 cables to several of our classrooms this summer, but it looks like it is going to be too expensive now. How realistic an alternative is 802.11n Ruckus? If I have a handful of desktop machines each logging onto our domain (maybe 5 per ap), can I expect the performance to be decent. The signal would be passing through a maximum of one thin wall. My other question for any Ruckus users out there relates to a situation whereby some users are connecting via 802.11g and others via 802.11n, does the system slow to accomodate those on 802.11g? I'd be interested in hearing from those of you have got it hear how you are getting on.

Well, we are only talking a couple of domain controllers and a member server. Internal walls are being knocked down and the power supply will be unavailable in that area throughout the hols. Any temporary location will not be air conditioned, so it is a bit of a dilemma. @Bossman - Are you referring to windows updates? I suppose my main concern is the integrity of the 2008 domain and associated features (DNS, DHCP, WSUS).

The builders are due to have the new server room completed by the start of next term, but I get a funny feeling that this isn't going to happen, in which case I am going to have to set up a very temporary server room for a while... The whole thing is being 'Project managed' by a guy from county. I'm not sure he realises that the school is not going to function very well with no IT network. The contractors are moving all the data cables and fibre as well, so there is plenty of scope for that to go badly too. Speaking of destoying fibre, I used to work for an ISP, and one of our data centre staff took down the whole national network during some routine maintenance by tripping over onto a couple of fibre cables. Fortunately the whole episode was captured on the security cameras for posterity (and general amusement). Anyway, back to the task in hand, I have got good backups, and the servers are pretty new, so I am hopeful that all should be ok.

Due to building working work over the summer, I have no choice but to switch our whole server 2008 network off for 5 weeks during the summer. Can anyone see any issues that are likely to arise from this? Thanks

As the title of the thread suggests, I have some desks and chairs from our ICT suite to give away. 11 desks, each large enough for two computers, and 34 adjustable computer chairs. Take a look at the photos to get a better idea. All of the furniture is in decent condition with no graffiti or gum stuck to the bottom of desks. We are doing some building work over the summer and replacing the furniture as we do it, but i'm sure this stuff would be ideal for someone out there. I need to get it all shifted by the 17th of July, and you'll need to collect it, although the desks can be easily dismantled. We're in St Austell, so it may be a bit of a drive for many of you, but on the bright side you can get some free furniture and maybe even fit in a trip to the seaside while you are at it. I've placed an order with Misco for a black 900 series with XP installed. Have been told that they should have stock in any day now. Paid about 280 ex vat. Looking forward to seeing how it runs.

We are trialing this at the moment. You have to install an agent on your MIS server which passes relevant details to the Keep Kids Safe site - hosted remotely. All of the SMS stuff is done at their end. Install was pretty pain free and it certainly seems to do what is says it does, with a few nice features thrown in. I'm not sure about the costing of it.

We had this exact problem recently. The problem occured when updating the package list - and this seemed to erase the contents of the station.ini in Q:\PackageControl file for each workstation. Once the workstations were restarted, AD repopulated the ini file but put uninstall_pending after each package. It could be a corrupt package. Check your package names in AD under Establishments and Locations to check that none have them have got strange characters at the end.

Thanks for your reply - was the resultant client just like a CC3 machine or were there differences?

We are running an RM CC3 network with ageing hardware. Fortunately all is not lost; Santa has been early and given us an Intel blade centre. I want to take the processing burden off the workstations themselves and so have started looking into Thin Client possibilities. Rm have a product called Client Connect but to be honest I'm not keen - surely we can do the same thing with other software. Neither am I very keen to pay a lot of money to upgrade to RM CC4 which also supports various thin client possibilities. What are my alternatives? Is it possibly to run thin client CC3 workstations (not vanilla) with any other software? Or is it better if we cough up and go down the RM route? Your ideas will be much appreciated.

Hi all, I'm trying to find a solution to a problem for our music department at the moment. Each student is sat at a pc with a keyboard connected in through the soundcard. Is anyone aware of any software that will enable the teacher (sat at the teaching machine at the front of the class) to eavesdrop on the sound from the other machines in the room. Although Netsupport allows you to communicate with student machines using a microphone, you can't pick the sound up from the soundcard. Any ideas?
