whose job is it or altering/creating/develping a network security policy, NM or ICT Director? I ask this because I've got a new business analyst coming to my school and I don't know if I should do the policy or he should do it... hold on... is this called reversive delegation?

It is expensive, but we are using Synetrix Secure Remote Access and it works pretty well. The RDP ports on our terminal server are not open to the outside world, and is good because during school hours we use our Terminal Server for the thin clients to connect, and out of school timetable teacheres/students can logon from home and see exactly the same interface (shared areas included) that the use at home. We have been using it for a couple of years and not a single regreat.

RM surely needs to be much more flexible, they can't possible put all their customers in one single bucket like they do now. I mean, they stopped builing the old RM One version two because the 'feedback' they got from customers was that the RM One version 3, that huge bulky that only comes with 19" widescreen, is the one everybody wanted, sorry, not us, 19" widescreen can't be applicable to all situations! Still on CC3, moving to RM (take 2, last summer installation failed!) CC4 over the summer, phew I skip the Vista issue, and sorry for you guys who has it, my sincere condolences, something is the network is dying...

I see that this thread is a bit cold now, but I thought I drop a question in case you are still on tune (sure you are!) I'm moving house and BT will not install my much needed broadband till somewhere in March!!!! so I was thinking getting a PAYG 3G modem for a month or so, question I have is that I have dyndns and RDP enable on my pc, so I can access it using RDP from anywhere I want, find this very useful when at work as I can access my pc and check mail or even test websites outside of hte filter policy in force in the school. Does this PAYG 3G give you an IP address to map to my dyndns, like with a BT router? it should do, shouln't it?

just for curiosity, have you got any vlans configured??

Is PaperCut compatible with RM CC3/4? At present we are on the trial with pcounter, but the win9x interface and the general use of the program is not that user friendly to my believe

We're also CC3, and the RM One are good only at the first glance, they latest model got quite a few flaws with power supply and screen, plus they are expensive. Last year we bought a few Omnino from Viglen and they are good, so it is to see how well they'll resonde to CC4!

Thank you for your ideas and comments, I take all of them on board. My experience sadly has showed me that you can't fully trust anybody, specially when the trusted individual is out of the environment when the amount of existing trust has already been generated. For example, I trust my car to drive on the road but I will not trusted to drive over water! Have seen some funny things lately (contracts the admin office tells me have been modified, people knowing how much each other is earning, jobs prospects, appraisal results some other people know, and some emails 'not in bold' that I hope are not related...) Investigation reveals that this unusual leak in documents info could have only happens using our existing VPN connection (the files show a modified time well into the night when school is closed). Legitimate users insisting they haven't change their own files, logs can't go any further, what am I to think of? Will get them to sign something just to be on the same side and, in a way, to protect them, but God help me be the one who throw the first stone.

chilli morning fellows, just wondering if you got a policy in place specifically for network technicians, a sort of AUP that they can sign to acknowledge certain rules like for example: - installing inappropriate software on the servers will take disciplinary actions. -accessing staff e-mails/documents without their permission will take disciplinary actions. You probably are wondering now what sort of network environment or working condition we have to wanted to do this AUP, but though I trust the technicians, I can't really be sure what they are doing at my back with the admin accounts, and because they provide support, they legitimate need to get access to certain admins areas and consoles that give them access to lots of confidential data. I just wondering if some of you have had a similar concern

We just got 14 shinny Apple 21.5" and the minute I unboxed them I realised that I haven't order any means to secure them! I've got some security labels with our school post code to stick them at their backs, but how to you secure the macs to the desk? is there any special bracket or last-innovation-japanese tool that would do the trick? SSD is surely the way to do, if you have a school (sch.uk) e-mail address, save yourself a few ponds and get it here: Microsoft Ultimate Steal/ dig it because they also have Win7 64-bit, I got it myself through this for just 30 ponds. They adversise it as upgrade but you can do a clean install
