Simple fix: 1. Set fire to DPS server 2. Claim "it was like that when I got in this morning" when challenged tomorrow (it works for all the other members of staff).

I have no qualifications above my three A-levels. I do however have ten years IT experience in a range of sectors and roles which employers seem to love. I have found that employers are more than happy to waive the degree requirement in preference of experience. There is one caveat however - it has taken more 8 and half years to break the legendary £20K barrier.

Background: Our LEA runs an upstream proxy for my school and applies different content filtering rules based on the port used, thus 8081 is for primary schools, 8082 for secondary, 8083 for 6th form colleges and 8084 for "unrestricted" staff access. The Bones: We have ISA 2004 installed and tend to pass our students through it and on to 8083 at the LEA. I am however concerned about unrestricted staff internet access, particularly in the absence of any form of AUP. Thus the question is this - can I assign Staff to a group within ISA and then forward the staff group to 8084, whilst adding students to a Student group and forwarding them on to port 8083? I have seen how to add mutliple upstream proxies to ISA but cannot seem to split traffic based on user groups. Any advice gratefully received.

We ran three sessions simultaneously last year without major problems apart from speed. And the software being generally poop.

We have just bought a 2600n which is really nice and quick. The problem is that the toner cartridges are only 2000 sheet capacity. That and it only ships with a 250-sheet paper tray, so like us, you will probably want to buy the extra paper tray so you can least hold a full ream of paper at once!

@ PatBoland - not a chance of this not going ahead. The Pilot is just an extending testing period (you know, they release substandard software, we waste weeks getting it running and then they repeat the process the following year). From 2008 the ICT KS3 onscreen testing will be statutory. This one will not be going away. UPDATE: Just logged into our DPS and seen that our 2007 update completed successfully yesterday afternoon.

Pants. I didn't realise there was a special thin-client version. I had intended just to run the standard on one on our TS server... Denied.

@beeswax - fundamentally the error messgae means that some of the data due to be sent to QCA/RM failed to upload correctly. This could be down to many things but in my experience is often due to temporary internet access problems. Keep an eye on the messages and see if this is a consistent problem - it may just be a one-off.

You could try installing on a standard PC and checking the CPU utilisation on that. This would at least give you an indication as to whether it is environmental or whether the software just cannot cope with multiple users at once...

We currently have three suites of thin clients which, in my mind, perform quite well (although our staff beg to differ). I am aware that there are often issues with access to USB drives but our setup appears to be fortunate in that we can read from and write said devices. Unfortunately though, not all USB pen drives work. Some do and some don't without any common linking factor. Does anyone know if there are any undocumented compatibility issues with Wyse 9150 terminals and USB drives? I'm getting lots of grief from staff on this one. All help gratefully received.

What is the minimum required permission level for 'Authenticated Users' on the software share of my choice?

We have had similar problems with any Flash media, be it software or website. This has caused me many, many headaches as every "Edookayshunal" software package now uses flash to provide an "engaging" user interface and when it does not run at 30fps on 30 workstations, suddenly teachers "can't teach" and the clients are no longer "fit for purpose" (although this may be down to the fact that they do not have an Apple stamped on the side). I think the latest Wyse management software (if the advertising blurb is to be believed) may make this lagging slightly less of an issue though.

Does one not get the free upgrades for the life of their volume license agreement?

Sharepoint will allow you to keep one copy of a document in a specified location which is then accessible to users according to their permissions. People can take local copies and do what they like to them, but the original is effectively set in stone unless the user has the right permissions to modify said file. Very, very useful system - I want our school to implement it so we can rid ourselves of the dreaded Winpool.
