I have found Eclipse to be set and run which to me was great. Not like the giant pile of turd called Oliver which we have just installed at my current school.

I think software like this should be installed as standard on any network which teachers might access

Thanks for the heads-up Ash, I went back to Microsoft online support and found that certain updates will knock out the firewall services causing the symptoms described previously. To "fix" the problem, one must do a "Modify" installation of ISA Server and de-select Advanced Logging. Once the install process completes, traffic through ISA resumes as per normal. The second step of the M$ "fix" is to reinstall the Advanced Logging option, but this failed for me. I will have a nother look when time permits (ha ha ha). Virus scan and adware scan = negative DNS entry exists and correct Microsoft Firewall process = cannot start (service-specific error code 212994) IPConfig = all present and correct NIC status light = everything ok Network Switch = everything ok I hate Mondays.

I have rebooted a few times without any chance in circumstance. A quick glance at the Application log shows that a few .Net hotfixes have been applied by WSUS too, although our other server have not been affected in this way. I have also discovered that the Domain Admin account does not have permission to open the Network and Dial-up connections folder in the Control Panel! :x For background info, the affected machine is running Win2K Server.

As is always the case, I have come into work this morning and something has me tearing my hair out! Our ISA 2004 Server has disappeared off the network and all of our students have lost their internet access as a consequence. I have managed to get the girls back online by passing them directly to our LEA proxy but the ISA issue remains. The most frustrating aspect of this issue is that the server appears to be running happily and it can access whatever it likes on the network. It does not however respond to external pings, Remote Desktop sessions or anything else you care to name. I'm at a loss. :? Any ideas anyone?

Not only was this system a complete pile of the stinkiest plop ever, but when I went back and reviewed the results generated (for some reason my ICT team ended up overseeing the actual exams too!), it became apparent that all the students had to do to get a grade was answer the first section of the first question. That alone was worth a level 3. If said student managed to complete the whole of section 1, they got a level 4. Being that grades were averaged out amongst the results generated by all students across the country who took the test, this would seem to indicate that everyone had a pants time with it! Here's to the 2007 fiasco!!!

The Google demo I saw showed how to create 3-D renders of buildings (such as the Empire State Building) directly onto Google Earth. Very, very clever stuff

As I understand it, the software is free for everyone but the key is required for access to Google's APIs etc. I have no idea what they will do with regards to data collection though.

I had a Securus unit in my previous post and found that the ~7K price tag was probably worth it in terms of backup in the event of a legal issue. Despite the obvious system abuse deterrent, we also found that it had a pastoral side - at least two students with serious personal problems were identified for professional help following analysis of their web browsing behaviours. In such a situation, 7K is cheap and easily justified. The last time I spoke to one of the Securus reps, he did mention that there was a "home" version which schools could sell to parents for use on home PCs. Any such sales would carry a percentage kickback for the school which could be offset against the next years renewal costs. That might be worth looking into again also...

I recently purchased two copies of Backup Exec 10d from Probrand and it set us back £315.82 per licence (including media). Certainly expensive, but cheaper than the grief you'll get if data gets lost

We currently use something from Ilient which includes an asset database too. Nice!

In my only dealings with this piece of you-know-what, we created a virtual CD image and let the kiddies use that. The software still didn't work 100% but the classteacher felt able to cope

How does one compile those switches back into the MSI though? I tried using WWIW and all seemed to have installed but the application and files were not loaded to the C: drive. Strangely the application was available for uninstallation in the Control Panel though (all 4GB of it!)...

I'm new to this software deployment stuff (or setting it up anyway!) so I'm not quite sure how to add the command line switches to an MSI. Any advice for a newbie please?

Does anyone have any experience of installing this software over the network? There is a tool included which configures MSIs for network deployment and all looks happy, but I cannot get the MSIs to install via GPO. As always the documentation is poor (although there is loads for actually using the software) and there are no hints supplied for getting this software onto remote PCs. Any ideas anyone?

The other thing to note about the Wyse Streaming Manager is the spec of the required terminal. I thought that this software may be the answer to all my users' complaints (yeah right!) regarding multimedia performance but then I saw that the clients must have a 1GHz processor. On the plus side, the advertising blurb says that any device matching the client specification (think of those musty old PCs you threw away in the summer holidays) can be used as a terminal...

Using Embedded XP it is possible to install some local apps for use, say if your Terminal Server goes down. Running local apps would protect your bandwidth and server resources too...? I dunno. Just guessing!

We have a Terminal Server for each of our suites of thin clients. Being as our labsa are all in constant use, this was felt to be the best method available 6 months ago at their inception...
