  2. i know its hitting vista now on mem sticks as it autoruns and brings up a menu saying "open this folder" twice, and one of them installs the virus while the other opens the folders normally. *touch wood* haven't been hit by it, but did hear that a school in Nottingham had its network downed due to a virus, but can't confirm if it was conficker
  3. Must admit, we had GFI Mailessentials here when I started and had no end of staff saying they were receiving about 30/40 messages a day of spam. On ZeroHours recommendation I purchased PureMessage and it's been on default spam settings. I think we have had about 3 spam messages get through since last November, the rest are dropped (and we use recipient validiation too).
  4. It's not new RM machines, it's our existing machines which were set up way before I started. I've thought about updating drivers, but to be honest this is enough of a task in itself along with all the other planning for the install. If the driver works I want to get it on so the machine can be brought online ASAP after install, and then I can look at updating them The problem I had was that a lot of the machines here are generic builds with a company logo stuck on, so no website to download from, and the company only supply a restore disk, not driver disk, so to grab them working now is a godsend!
  5. Thanks bossman and everyone else for the advice. Hightower: no, it didn't pick up the VGA or sound so wasn't picking up all non-windows drivers unfortunately.
  6. Basically what I've been told/seen of the RM management console is that it has a bank of a load of drivers, but if you have any to add, you need to get them and add them to it for windows to pre-install them. So really I need it to get them in a list so i can only import the ones i know, rather than mass importing drivers i dont know
  7. digital signage terminal server or some way of staff accessing from home bank of netbooks for student use outside of class upgrade internet line (if possible) desktops for all rooms with interactive whiteboards (again if poss) just ideas off the top of my head that may/may not apply to your school
  8. With our CC4 install looming, I was advised on the CC4 course to get drivers from any machine already up and running, to save having to search the net and hundreds of CDs after the machine is wiped. The instructor gave me a link to drivergrabber, which is supposed to run in Windows, and make folders for all win32 drivers it finds for your machine, making it easier to reinstall them. I tried it on one machine and it only picked up wifi, USB and LAN driver. Are there any tools out there that I could run on a working machine that will grab all relevant drivers to a folder, saving me trawling websites and downloading drivers from the mix of PCs we have here? Cheers

He went to the same art college my dad did. My dad always had a lot of respect for him, as he used to teach real art, not how to make a 500ft image of a whale out of salt and macaroni. Proof that you don't need to shout at the top of your voice, or dance about like a tit to be a good kids tv presenter.

    10k!!

well i worked in a special measures school, where some teaching staff were given extra management points just as an added pay measure to get them to work there. it was said the pay was higher as they had to deal with harsher circumstances than a normal school. we as support staff got f**k all extra, in fact i started on 12k there. i know of some teachers there who had an extra 5/6k from the off to get them to go there. it wont work. the best teachers will be ones who can teach and deliver lessons and know their subjects inside out. same teacher trying to deliver a lesson on IT in a school where 60% of kids are truanting internally, and the 40% that do make it just sit and talk and play on their PSPs and tell the teacher to f**k off if asked to do work. Yes you may be a great teacher, but if the kids dont WANT to learn (the school i worked at it was apparent they didn't) it makes no difference. It's the governments favourite old game of 'if we throw enough money at it, the problem will go away'
  12. Has anyone clicked on the 'green card lottery' ad on here. The one that would let you live/work in the US. I clicked out of boredom and it honestly reads like a Nigerian prince was going to give me $25,0000. I think it's being run by LOLcats..........Has you job and two ears?
  13. we're probably looking at 100 x 2gb or 4gb. doesn't even have to be fancy, just the school name and address would be useful. would be amazingly useful if we could have individually branded ones with teacher initials but maybe im just wanting the moon on a stick
  14. I too am looking at getting in bulk memory sticks, and the ability to have them with the school logo would be a bonus. Little-Miss: which company were you speaking to about branding them and how much per stick was it costing?
  15. I went on a course in October and the school paid for travel + hotel. Daytime meals were included in the course and breakfast as part of the hotel. When I got back, the finance woman asked what I'd eaten in the evening and when I said I just grabbed McDonalds, she said where's the receipt. Said I didn't have one and she said "silly man, you could have claimed that as well, we pay for your meals!" Wish I'd have known, I would have used the hotels restaurant for my meals and not got a big mac! They are paying my travel expenses for going to BETT, but as I'm only there the day, I won't ask about food payment
  16. Looking at different helpdesks and the demo of this does seem pretty clean and simple to use. Just wondering how are users brought in? Can this interact with active directory to get their names and logins at all? also, our senior management team would like to have an overview of the requests submitted (tech style) but also be able to submit requests as themselves. i would still be the only tech actually doing the work, but management would like to be able to log in and see all jobs to see what work is being submitted. is this possible or would this require the pro edition? **EDIT** I see on the site it says LDAP and AD Integration so I'll take that as an answer to my question. Any response on the management overview/supervisor role would be appreciated though, thanks
  17. If that happens, all you lot had better move out, I'm bringing a snow plow to get to the stand! Absolutely love it, as people have said, especially on toast!
  18. You know what got me, I usually have it set to oC not oF and I reinstalled Firefox yesterday so it's forgotten my preferences. Maybe if I close my eyes this will all go away and I won't feel like Father Dougal
  19. Well, in Nottingham it is anyway according to the BBC. Now where did I put those shorts......
  20. I'm sure MS have a sort of killswitch built in. Had RROD last December and sent it back. Was sent a new one with HDMI port (my old one supposedly couldn't be repaired). Boxing day this year (well, 2008) I switch this one on, RROD. Then it worked for a few hours but the network kept failing on it, wouldn't log into LIVE or see my PC. After rebooting the 360, RROD again which hasn't gone away. Thing is, every time it's happened has been about 2 weeks after I've used a voucher for a month or 3 months gold live subscription! Seriously considering just getting rid as it's a PITA having to return a console continually
  21. What a bloody new year! Saturday night I noticed I couldn't get on to the school mail server from home, so I guessed something was up. Yesterday was a staff training day and I was meant to be doing a presentation to all staff (4 x 1 hour sessions) to give a taster of our new network, what it offers etc. Got in at 7:15 to find my office in silence. No switches on, no servers on, no nothing on! Found a caretaker who checked and said a couple of fuses had tripped so put them back on. Got back to my office, switches came back on but no servers. I found that the UPS's they were plugged into had obviously kicked in when a powercut over Xmas had occurred, drained, and then gone off. So I had to plug the servers directly into mains sockets just to get them on while the UPSs slowly recharged. The best thing was, I'd emailed my presentation to my work email during Xmas expecting to come in, load it up and away we go.....so no email server on meant no presentation. It was all going slowly downhill!! The 9AM presentation was cancelled and staff from that re-assigned into the later groups, and by about 9:15 I'd got one of the UPSs to stop beeping low battery so I plugged two of the servers back in there. Tried switching on our ADSL router, no joy. So have had no internet until about an hour ago when a new router was delivered. Thankfully the presentations went well, it being my first time having to give presentations and stand in front of people talking and explaining etc. So I now have one dead UPS which needs a new battery (but for its age can just be replaced) and a new router. Not the sort of start back in the new year I was hoping for!
  22. so i see she bought you bob monkhouses bumper joke book then
  23. I know it's more techie than anything else, but last night she was moaning that i brought my eeepc to work to use and now we have the internet she has nothing to use. So I might look at the 8.9" eeepc for her.
  24. I think we just bought this one for home (can't remember model but the contrast ratio looks right). Does it's job, haven't tested the wii on it yet but TV wise no ghosting or anything. http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=52W0
  25. If you can find us a wedding venue that won't go into receivership you're on I think she was saying she doesn't really want a present where we will be apart, something we could both share. The spa is for both of us in Feb so that will be OK, and I think any sort of experience days aren't going to be that great so something practical (but not an apron! )
