  1. i forgot, we also had PHOENiX, which we named after phoenix nights, but staff thought it was because the old server died and this was the new one (phoenix from the flames). we also had TATTOO, another phoenix nights reference....and it was a small server too
  2. BBC NEWS | World | Americas | McDonald's sued over nude photos Seriously, now who is the idiot in this story.....I don't think ol' Ronald McDonald is this time!
  3. i must agree with your brother in law, you are pretty amateur if you can't help him create halo over the phone. i mean only last week i was helping valve with the next instalment of half life by text. you need to stop dragging!
  4. we used to have homer as a server, but that was when we had one server, so the simpsons theme died pretty quick. now at this place we just have academic1, admin, firewall, internal i have to think of server names for when the new network goes in and the servers are flattened. i do like the muppets theme, "just go to f:....should be labelled as shared on gonzo" "no, not p:, that's teacher shared on fozzy"
  5. we need to ban you from the internet, seriously!

    Need OCX files

Its LessonMaker Foundation by EDUTech. I've emailed them asking about replacement CDs but no response as yet. Luckily I found another PC with it already installed and copied the OCX and DLL files it needed from there. Cheers for the advice, I'll keep it in mind if I run into any more files required

    Need OCX files

There's a piece of software over in the Kindergarten school that is playing up a bit. I've copied the executables from a machine before it died and tried running them but it moans about missing ocx files. I google each one as they come up but can't always download them. Is there a site that lets you download OCX files free? I just thought it would be quicker to do it this way than to call the maker for a replacement cd as the software is needed urgently. For example right now i need IGTOOLBARS50.OCX Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have staff on my back as they "cant teach ICT" without this program!
  8. We've currently got an Exchange 2003 server but have been getting massive amounts of spam recently. The server has McAffee Groupshield installed, and also GFI MailEssentials (both installed before I started here). When I started, I purchased Sophos including PureMessage. My question is, should I remove the McAffee and GFI software and just use Sophos, or can PureMessage run alongside the others? Also, if anybody has setup PureMessage before, how long and complicated is it, as I would want it up and running quite soon after install to keep us as protected as possible. Thanks
  9. maybe they are waiting for the 11th hour too?
  10. i can't lock the door, i've got to be there to make sure the stuff is all working on the day!!! so keep an eye out on C4 for the "10 worst IT disasters" show, i'll be there
  11. i agree with all the comments above. a superb job
  12. I've just been told by the head that a Channel4 film crew will be in this Friday to film something, and part of what they are filming is our assembly. You guessed it, the assembly needs projector/laptop/DVD all working. It hasn't failed for a while, and I will be thoroughly testing it before hand but I don't like the thought of a BSOD or something on the day in front of the whole school AND a film crew. PLEASE WORK!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. i didn't no. i was just working in the IT suite and went to switch on the PC next to that window and noticed a mark. i thought it was on the inside and then realised it was the outside. shame i didn't have my camera with me, that was my phone that took the pic.
  14. It's things like this that definitely make the half term days pass quicker. Was working in the IT suite and noticed a funny mark on the window. Just had to take a pic!
  15. thanks once again! i'm assuming it only propogates to newly created profiles, not ones already in action? not a major prob if it is, only about 6 users are on the new system at the mo.
  16. aha! as its a computer policy, am i ok setting it at domain root level? thank you very much for that by the way!
  17. I'm having to pretty much redo the user structure here from scratch as my predecessor used some sort of program to do a load of stuff and it's useless (for lack of better word). I've got everything working, a user logs in, it creates a home area and profiles folder for them automatically. The problem is the permissions. On the home area its fine, once its created, correct permissions are applied and I can go into the folder as an admin. The profiles folder however won't let me in or add/remove any groups security. All I can do is take ownership and then try, but I don't want to change ownership. The only difference between home area and profiles folder in terms of permissions is one setting in the advanced permissions, to do with deleting subfolders for the user. That's it. For the profiles folder I have: Creator Owner Domain Admins Staff System The only thing concerning me is that domain admins has full control on folders, subfolders and files, yet when the users profile dir is created, I have no access to it. Any light shed on this would be a great help as I will be moving over all staff very soon and would prefer it sorted before rather than having to try and fix after.
  18. What is up with IE8? Every day I visit Edugeek and have to re-enter my user/pass. I tick remember me but every day it forgets. This never happened on IE6 or IE7 yet the moment I put IE8 on, it's forgetting my username for here (not tested other sites yet) daily. I've looked through options and clear on exit isn't ticked, and all other settings are from a GPO so nothing has changed there
  19. sorry, having an early brainfart moment and just cannot think straight. i've got redirected start menus and desktops for staff but have also just allowed the server to cache one domain password so that they can log on at home using their network login (rather than giving them local admin or creating new users). i'll explain that they can't access my docs but can use it with a pen drive or whatever they see fit. i just cant remember if the machine off the network will use the local profile and desktop/sm if no network one is found, or if it will hang on loading the start menu as its constantly searching for it.
  20. granted try in user config>admin templates>windows components>internet explorer and have a look around there. if not, also take a peek at user config>windows settings>internet explorer maintenance
  21. cant you set IE settings in GPO somewhere. to say things like what to allow for intranet sites, what security level, whether to run activex etc?

    Outlook PRF files

I know there is a thread detailing how to get Outlook to configure to Exchange on login for each user, but rather than reply in an old topic I thought I'd best create one here to address my questions: If I use the CIW to create a PRF file with stuff like %username% so it will work for any user, can I then put that PRF in, say, a shared start menu or shared area, and then aon Outlook icon make it so that it runs something like: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\outlook.exe" /importprf \\server\share\outlook.prf would that work so that any staff member logging in and running the outlook link would automatically get outlook opened and configured to their Exchange mailbox? Running the office setup again isn't an option here, so a way where i don't have to reinstall things would be ideal for me
  23. no, it's not....................comrade
  24. Yep, had one of them here too. Sounds exactly the same actually. Did she by any chance open an email attachment? Had it on one of our finance machines. Even now that I've cleared up as much as possible, Sophos still tells me everyday it's picked up a file from it. Probably trying to replicate files again. That one sure is a to get rid of without wiping!
  25. thank you very much! i was sure i clicked on that before and it only showed the TO field. damn it!!
