NetSupport manager DNS update
rdhawkins replied to agisler's topic in Network and Classroom Management
It should work if you configure NSM to connect by host name, that way it will connect whatever the IP address is. Do this from Network->Configure and then the TCP/IP section. Rob -
Hi, unfortunately you can't have a full screen view on one monitor and continue working on the other. You can almost achieve this by using the Maximize View Area option. This removes the menu, toolbar and status bar. Turn it on from the View->Maximize View Area menu item, to come out of it open the View windows System menu and select View->Restore View. Netsupport School (how have you set it up?)
rdhawkins replied to Halfmad's topic in Network and Classroom Management
El, with the later versions of NSS you can't kill the process even if you are an admin on the machine. However, there are always ways round this if you (changing service settings etc). Also, if networking is lost by removing the cable then the client should connect back to the Tutor as soon as it can. You might want to contact our support department so they can take you through the settings. Regards Rob -
Netsupport School (how have you set it up?)

Hi, I'd be interested to know about any security holes that you are aware of? VNC and its derivatives are pretty good for remote control but don't really provide the features for classroom management. Regards Rob -
Hi John, sorry to hear you're experiencing problems with NSS 11. I would recommend getting in touch with our Technical Support department - Support They can then take you through some simple checks and hopefully get you back up and running. Regards Rob Hawkins

Ranger remote control - wirelessly
rdhawkins replied to award's topic in Network and Classroom Management
award, No it should be able to locate the clients when your laptop is wireless. The known list method that works suggests there is a configuration issue with your access point. When in 'browse' or 'room' mode the Tutor will send out a number of UDP broadcast packets across the network asking available clients to respond with their name, address, configured room etc. It then determines who it needs to connect to and connects to them. It also has to browse to initially build up the known list which is why I had you do that when wired. By the sounds of it the packets aren't getting through so the Tutor doesn't find any clients. You might like to contact our support team if you're still having issues. Rob -
Ranger remote control - wirelessly
rdhawkins replied to award's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Depending on how you are connecting to the student machines it will be sending out a UDP broadcast asking for all machines to respond. If you're not getting anything back then this could be being blocked by your router. It does this in 'browse' mode and 'room' mode, if you are connecting to a known list of computers then once they have been added they are connected to directly (either by IP or host name). You could test this by switching to known list mode when in wired mode (School->Configure->Student Selection) and then see if it connects Ok in wireless. Rob -
If your Tutor console is on the same network then you should just be able to connect out of the box. There are a few different ways of connecting to student machines with Ranger Remote Control (aka NetSupport School). If all your machines use a naming convention with some sort of prefix you can connect to all machines based on a prefix. Alternatively you can create a list of computers that you can connect to, finally there is a way to connect to a room of computers. Each student machine is configured for a room (or the student can choose) and the Tutor connect to that room. You shouldn't have to tell the Tutor the IP range, in all of the above modes it will browse the network to find the relevant students that should be in its class. There is an article here about how to connect to students - http://www.netsupportsoftware.com/support/kb/asp/kbprovider.asp?gettd=402&lang=EN&xsl=http%3A//www.netsupportsoftware.com/support/kb/TechDoc.xsl Rob

You might be better off contacting our tech support department NetSupport Software - Technical Support They can take you through a few simple steps to help diagnose the problem. Rob

Contact RM (rather than AB Consulting!), they use a standard NSM.LIC so should be able to provide the details to you. Rob

Also look at VinylStudio, not free but not expensive either. It's usually used for cleaning up a recording direct from vinyl, it might be able to clean up from MP3 too. Rob

Johny, how many student machines are you trying to connect to? Also, have you had an install of NetSupport School on the machines before? The License Exceeded is displayed when you are trying to connect to more machines than you have a license for. The trial version supports up to 40 student machines. Rob

We'll be doing a free update to NSS shortly to allow it to manage Mac and Linux Assist students

Tom - I'll PM you regarding this as there may be some way we can integrate with SmooothWall -
RM Tutor 4 not blocking internet
rdhawkins replied to beyond_bedlam's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Tom, you're right this is better handled at the network layer, NSS is designed to complement software like SmoothWall so that a teacher can control access to the internet just for their class. The tools in NSS help a teacher keep a class on focus rather than block access to every site they shouldn't go to, that is better handled further up the line. Rob -
RM Tutor 4 not blocking internet
rdhawkins replied to beyond_bedlam's topic in Network and Classroom Management
beyond_bedlam: Do you know what the "little darlings" are doing to get round the blocking? Cue: You are right NSS 10 doesn't support block all browsers but the latest 10.5 does, this is/will be available in RM Tutor 5. -
Mission Maker compatibility issue with NetSupport
rdhawkins replied to APMerry's topic in Educational Software
This is likely caused by NSS using a mirror driver, Windows disables Direct 3D when a mirror driver is loaded. You can configure at what stage a client machine loads the mirror driver or use an alternative method altogether. On the student machine run the Client Configurator and select the Remote Control section, under View you can adjust when the mirror driver is loaded. By default the mirror driver is loaded when the Tutor connects. You can change this to load it when the Tutor wants to View the student. To allow Direct 3D all the time untick both "Except while viewed" and "Except while connected" and tick "Enable Screen Scrape". Screen scrape is an alternative method of remote controlling which doesn't use the mirror driver. Hope that helps,
