Does this happen in both FF and IE? With IE even if there is no scrollbar to the right of the window, the scrollbar placeholder remains so that your page doesn't jump. With FF you only get a scrollbar if the content merits it, so as you move from page to page you can get a slight jump depending if the scrollbar is there or not. Of course I could be barking up the wrong tree and have misinterpreted your question.

AFAIK, if you're running a Windows server, whether IIS or WAMP, you'll have difficulty getting Mahara to run. There has been some recent experimentation but nothing conclusive so far.

I don't think you are "sidetracking" the dialogue. What you see here are the many different approaches to inducting the same piece of software across several LEA's. What also jumps out is the "no techies" policy in some areas. Are they saying that come the managed service that won't be a techie'sjob? Do they feel that techies will hold back the development of the software? Or is it simply that the "backend" is so straightforward to use that the none IT literate can do it? Fronter was installed in three of our LEA secondary schools some while ago, with support provided by the local CLC. Since single status came in late last year, this support has been removed. How does the "no techies" policy work here? I appreciate this may be an isolated case, but I believe some Edugeekers have set up their own Fronter forum(s) for mutual support.

The view at our school is that they don't come within the remit of a managed service. Although SIMS support will come via whatever you buy into, I don't think an MSP will want to support, or tupe a SIMS manager as I can't see where the profit in that will come from.

It would be sad if "gagging orders" were the name of the game, as this always makes me suspicious that folk have something to hide, but maybe that's just in my nature. I can't see "commercial confidentiality" being the reason for this silence as they've already won the bid and are in place.

I did this in a one to one session with a teacher and she ended up creating separate folders for each individual piece of work she was uploading, and within those folders was another folder named 114 with the actual item to be uploaded. So it ended up with around 10 folders each with the name of the folder it contained, which in turn contained a folder called 114 which eventually contained the Word document for the assignment. What has (pleasantly) surprised me is the teachers who have taken to the VLE; some unexpected faces in there The Open Source Schools is an idea which sounds promising, but I don't want to give the impression that I'm advocating a particular OS here, that battle is for another day, the important point, or one of the important points, is that I'm trying to give/teach them transferable skills. When we are eventually taken over by a managed service (circa 2013), or if a teacher moves on to another school, then they should have something in place which will ease the transition from one VLE to another (if that's possible). There are basic skills, such as you say, creating folders and uploading files which I imagine are common to most if not all VLE's. I haven't come across a teacher yet who can't browse to a file and attach it to an email, but ask them to browse for a file to upload it and some of them are completely flummoxed. Only connect as E. As part of teacher induction at our school I'm aiming to provide some online training material aimed at getting new staff used to using our Moodle VLE. It may well be that this skill can be transferred to other brands of VLE, but for the moment I need to concentrate on ours. Has anyone here attempted this? Does anyone have any suggestions on where they would start if they were doing it? I should add that this work will also form the basis of my final year degree course, which runs from now until the November/December, though I want to have the training material in place before the summer holidays so that incoming staff can attempt it at their leisure. As I may use quotes in my final submission can I assume that I have you permissions to do this unless you specifically opt out. Any quotes used will be treated anonymously, but I may identify them by initials such as, A said "xxx" whilst B replied, "xxx" in order to differentiate threads. Naturally I will share this work with the community if you desire. It may be an idea to put this on the wiki. Thanks in advance.

came across this article today - Outsourcing ICT as part of Building Schools for the Future (BSF) | Education | The Guardian Interesting section on Jim Knight's reaction to being asked id PFS has powers to prevent a school opting out of managed services, "This has caused such concern in schools across the country that questions have been asked in parliament. Ken Purchase, Labour MP for Wolverhampton, raised it with the minister for schools, Jim Knight, whose response was unambiguous: "Partnerships for Schools does not have powers to prevent a school opting out of proposals for authority-wide ICT programmes. Where a school wishes to opt out of the managed service, it must submit an alternative business procurement case. This must demonstrate that the school's alternative provision will be at least of an equivalent standard to the managed service proposed by the local authority, that it is able to link up to the area-wide solution, and that it passes a value-for-money test to ensure taxpayers' money is being well spent." I'm sure GD has mentioned this before somewhere but I can't locate it.

Nothing but kudos to you, and thanks for the encouragement. Any plans? Sorry I didn't see this earlier. It's not easy fitting it round everyday life, but somehow you manage it. I know my final year has started as I've come out in a nervous rash again (back of the hands and ankles). Was fine over Christmas.
