  1. Then I shall email again, mentioning this thread and hopefully I will finally get somewhere.
  2. So we should send them this link...? Oh how I wish I knew that before I let my stuff go.... Still waiting!
  3. Dear Mods, Please can the info in the following thread be added to the Win 7 Sticky section? http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/72338-will-windows-7-admx-template-work-server-2003-group-policy.html It is really useful and I only found it by chance! Also possibly add in something about the central policy store as regards mixed XP and Win 7 domains, eg. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2008/58130-policy-store.html Thank you. I know lots of people have already crossed this particular bridge, but for those of us still lagging behind!
  4. OK, I'll give it a try, thanks. But still worried as Ctrl-Alt-Del is a security thing. If anyone knows another way of doing this....
  5. OK, thanks, but... we have the do not display last user name enabled, and I thought turning off Ctrl+Alt+Del was a bad thing to do..??
  6. Can't find answer to this on here yet, but maybe someone can point me to a thread I've missed. Anyway: New to Win 7 clients on our Server 2003 network. Is there a way to get the login box to come up straight after pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del? At the moment, after pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, I am getting a blank picture icon labelled Other User, and have to click on that to get the login box. These clients are for our new Foundation pupils, and I could do with making it as easy as poss.
  7. I have the answer! Rang TTS and they guided me to the product page for the datalogger. There are downloads on a tab beneath the product sales details. There is a USB lead driver zip file. Downloaded that and installed the exe it contains. Log-Box Primary ICT Classroom USB Edit: Also need to download the software exe. These two together will detect the OS and install the appropriate drivers and software. If you haven't already installed the Windows Help File viewer, you will also need to download this from the Microsoft website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
  8. We have some dataloggers purchased from TTS (primary school dataloggers) with the Datadisc software by a teacher. Now trying to install them for use with Windows 7! The 32 bit version of Windows seems fine. But the drivers for the serial/USB connection to the datalogger are refusing to install, and not having any success looking for drivers online. There is supposed to be a website with tech support (http://www.log-box.co.uk) but Google can't find the site. Anyone else tried and succeeded with this?
  9. Sort of helps, thanks. Do I just drop all the program shortcuts from the local Win7 All Users start menu in the Programs folder on the share? Could I use my existing share and just create a Win7\Curric\Start Menu\Programs path, making sure permissions are as you suggest?
  10. We currently have a Windows 2003 server and XP clients, running redirected My Docs and Start Menu done through GPO successfully. Now I need to add Win 7 clients. I can find lots about the settings for redirecting the start menu, but nothing about how to create the actual start menu. I have a share set up for the XP client start menu folder: 1. can I put the Win 7 start menu in there? 2. where do i get the start menu from to put in the share? and 3. can I just copy it across? I know it's prob a stupid question, but I've never had to do this before, as the XP start menu was set up for me when the server was first installed.
  11. I used RRIT after checking for firms on here. They collected back in the middle of October, but I am still waiting for paperwork (other than the waste transfer note the collection guy left) despite having chased this up twice. Not likely to use them again...

  13. My daughter has gone with Sky broadband in her student house. Used samknows first to check for local providers, and then decided on Sky. All three users in the house are wireless on the router supplied by Sky. It's only a terraced house, but the signal and speed has been very good. Don't think any of them are into gaming, but they use catch up TV and no complaints so far.
  14. Well, they're still going strong. I've had three calls in a fortnight at least, and have started logging them. They are making wild stabs at my broadband supplier (so far they've tried BT and Sky) and the voice is changing from male to female now. My parents have had some calls too, which has bothered them a bit. You can report them to the ICO which I have done, but not sure what good it will do. Stop Unwanted Sales and Marketing Telephone Calls - ICO and scroll down to the bottom link which takes you to https://www.snapsurveys.com/swh/surveylogin.asp?k=134674895144 I guess if you can give some details about the calls and dates and times it may help them to build up a picture. Was going to ring BT but a quick Google search showed this would prob be a waste of time as the number just comes up as International and 1471 returns no number given. Having Googled the supposed company name and nuisance calls, I turned to trusty Edugeek and found what I needed in minutes! Going to try the "police are monitoring my phone for nuisance calls" approach if it starts to annoy me. In the meantime, one of the other approaches may be more fun, though I'm not sure I want to be sworn at!
  15. Not using it, as it was too new to pass the LA procurement process, but heard good things about Kite during the procurement process from secondary schools that had taken a look off their own back: The Kite Learning Platform - How Kite Works Claims to integrate with AD.
  16. Is there a particular UK supplier you could recommend talking to from experience, or is it a case of getting contacts from their website? I am very new to all this, having been forced into it by the fact that new build primary schools here aren't being built with IT Suites! Have been to an Enterasys meeting and demo which looked promising. They talk about airtime fairness rather than packet fairness...As I say, this is all new to me so I am trying to piece together as much info as possible. They did recommend surveying for 5Ghz, and they seem to have good customer service as experienced by local academy.
  17. Any more details about this? It would be good to try and fix this before it happens again.
  18. Thanks, I did find the shutdown command line info online, but got the order of the forced switch wrong, so server started shutdown but waited forever for processes to stop. Did a power button job at lunchtime today, and so far so good - can now use Ctrl-Alt-Del. Don't know how long it will last though....
  19. Well, the restart didn't work. I had to do it from RDP on a laptop. Appeared to run from that end, left things running (I thought), get to the server and find it still locked. Doesn't look as if it has restarted at all! And now I can't RDP in either! Looks like I am going to have to simulate a power cut at the end of school today.....
  20. Odd issue. Ctrl-Alt-Del won't bring up the login screen. If I do Ctrl-Alt-Del and then click on the blue Help link on the opening screen, I get the login prompt. But now the computer is locked, so no blue Help and I can't get the login screen. Tried the following: 1. Keyboard replacement - no good. Anyway, once I can get logged in, the keyboard is fine. I can also use the keyboard to bring up the on screen keyboard (WinKey+U) even when the computer is locked. 2. RDP in and check Event log. RDP works. Nothing relevant in event log that I can see. 3. VNC and sending Ctrl-Alt-Del also doesn't work. 4. Googled the issue and can't find anything there that looks as if it will help. 5. Sophos is up to date and nothing has been picked up. I am going to reboot at lunchtime, all being well, in the hope that this will resolve the issue. But any help from anyone who has had this and fixed it would be great!
  21. Just looking at what SCCM is now. Looks like it is only available on Server 2008? One more year of 2003 to go here (unless disaster strikes)!
  22. It is the hardware components that I would like to be able to specify the most: number of USB, position of RJ45 and power socket, external monitor port type, etc., together with minimum RAM (that changed too) and processor. We've been buying more expensive business type laptops, and therefore haven't had more than a handful of minor issues as a result of the better build. But it is frustrating not to just be able to get the same model each time we need to buy a batch. I guess I'm just going to have to make a very definitive list of where everything needs to be etc. and only buy from companies that can tell/show me where the ports etc are on the laptop.
  23. I am getting fed up with the change of model that seems to happen every few months with laptops. We have bought same make and model series over the last two years, but individual model changes to the series mean that we don't get exactly the same spec each time. Now the new series has been redesigned so that dimension is slightly wider and power socket is on side, not back, which is causing us some issues with charging cabinets. Is it possible to get a manuafcturer to build a laptop to your spec, with reasonable allowance for changes in chipsets, O/S etc? On a recent FITS Practitioner course, one of the Network Managers was saying they did this, but I didn't get a chance to ask how it was done. Anyone done this on here, and if so how big an order would you have to place to get this to happen?
  24. Just in case anyone else gets troubled by this: A member of staff has had endless issues with the Internet, both IE and Firefox on staff laptop (standalone). Browser window appears wrong, searches show up no results, etc. Turns out she has installed iLivid (a download manager) on the laptop, together with the bundled searchqu toolbar. It's the toolbar that does the damage - it resets the home page and seems to interfere with browsing. I couldn't see any evidence of a toolbar on IE or Firefox, but think that she had closed it and that seemed to have made the problem worse as it then became intermittent. Anyway, you can uninstall it (appears as Windows searchqu toolbar in the Programs list). You'll probably then have to reset the home page on all the browsers too. Helpful info here. Right - off to have words with a teacher.
