It is set up in IE Properties on the server, if that is what you mean.

We have a proxy set up in our LAN Connections in IE settings, if that's what you mean.

We've had one of those this week, as an email direct to the headteacher inbox. Our office manager says that the ICO rules mean she will have to reply. But I have suggested she sees if she can flag up the request with the ICO as this sort of info takes ages to compile and it seems to be from some sort of marketing organisation.

Is RBC our regional broadband consortium? We are part of E2BN, but Updata are our ISP. And I can't get the E2BN time server to resolve either.

There seem to be a lot of entries in root hints, and it is set up to use that if all else fails. But I don't understand why I can't get to the time server.

All of our machines can access the Internet fine for everyday use. ipconfig /all shows the correct IP address of our server in DNS Servers. But I have run tracert -d 8.8.8.8 at command prompt. That shows I can get to the router, then two other IP addresses starting with 10.112 after that and then timeout. Does that mean anything?

I have just tried adding 8.8.8.8 to Forwarders, and after a few seconds it came back with Unable to Resolve......?

Thanks. I don't have any forwarders or conditional forwarders listed in properties. This is all completely new to me so I'm off to work out my next step...! Great to have some help from you guys so I know where to look.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I needed to know where the issue was, and wasn't sure that I was explaining things to Updata enough for them to be giving me an accurate response. I don't get a response from google or the pool either.

I am also struggling with getting my issue across to our Internet provider (Updata). They say they have unblocked ports to requested ntp servers, but that we must have a local DNS issue that is still causing problems. I have checked various registry settings as per the last thread, and all seems to be set up correctly. However, I am still hitting a brick wall with getting correct time. Please can some wise Edugeek member look at the attached file where I have copied and annotated the various errors I am getting from the server, cmd, etc.? And is the second bit meant to be the startup script or a way of creating a startup script? Sorry, but I'm learning as I go along....

Did anyone come up with a definitive network wide fix for this? Preferably one that I can understand too! As this is now happening here, and the cause would seem to be that laptops are not powered down properly, go into sleep mode when lid is shut, then the charger plug is turned off to the trolley and the laptop runs out of juice. I kept being told that folks couldn't log in on some laptops, then finding the laptop looking as if I forgot to add it to the domain. I cought one or two machines running Windows repair when I powered up plugged in. There are only 12 laptops to deal with, so if I have to edit registry on each, so be it, and I can do future edits before imaging. But help would be very much appreciated!

Can I start a new thread on iPad cases? Not much up to date info on other threads. We are looking for cases that protect against knocks and can also be used as stands for typing, viewing etc. Use in primary school environment. Some of the amazon etc. reviews indicate that stands fall over in lowest position on stands, and there are some bad reviews for the stand on the Griffin Survivor saying that it broke quickly. Any good or bad experiences? Thanks.

Well, if they have, they're not telling me. I've had various discussions with them about unblocking time servers, and they've never offered me theirs! But then I suppose, as always, I need to ask them the actual question...too much to expect that they will know what i need and offer it...!

Thanks. Good to know that I am not the only one struggling to make sense of all this. We can't ping any of the time sources - it is forbidden by our Internet Provider. Still struggling to get up and running - asking for time.windows.com to be unblocked hasn't helped (possibly it is changing it's IP address regularly). We are E2BN too, so may go down that route instead. It also looks like our Internet Provider supplied router is set to be used, but it may not have correct time or can't be used for this purpose. I am continuing discussions with our Internet Provider! Your second article looks good. I went through the first article from another source and checked all the registry settings. As far as I could tell, they were OK. The second article sorts out some of the confusing bits, so I may have to take a deep breath and edit the registry. I have backed it up already anyway, before I did the checking. But when you only have one server, and an ancient one at that, it is a bit daunting.

Finally had some time to look at this. Turns out NTP traffic is blocked by default, so that is the main issue. However, I need an NTP server to synch to, and our internet provider wants the IP address of that server. At the moment, I have enabled GP for the default of time.windows.com (although it won't work until I get traffic unblocked). I am nervous of picking a time server at random, as some are primary and some secondary (I should use a secondary??) and some are OpenAccess but require notification. Anyone got any recommendations for something I can use without getting into trouble? Also, in the GP settings, do I need to enable the NTP server bit? The explanation seems to imply that this allows anyone to use my server as an NTP source, but I'm probably being paranoid and that's probably blocked by our internet provider anyway....??? I do need the clients to be able to get time from the server, and this is the GP setting that does this, right? Sorry, but this is all very new to me, which is why I have left it so long to sort out.

First, but I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Library and Information Science! What other jobs / roles have you done previously? My first post was IT, then career break to bring up children, then Domestic Worker for Age Concern, Midday Supervisor at primary school and then my current post. How many interviews did it take to get your first job in IT? 3 for first post, as I failed second interview for programmer with Boots. I was then asked to come for an interview by my old uni dept and they employed me. One for current post. Have you ever felt that being female is a help or a hindrance to gaining a job in IT? I don't think I've ever experienced prejudice within the schools IT sector. Certainly in the minority in this LA, but it can work for me in that it is easier for people to remember me at meetings. I don't have experience outside school IT so can't comment on issues in industry. If you were considering IT (or other engineering / programming careers) whilst at school what support did you receive? Computers were very new when I was at school. At secondary school, our computer lessons largely consisted of learning to fill out punched cards! But I do remember a trip to the Computer Science dept at Warwick Uni to this day. In my uni applications for Library Science, I rejected one uni where I had to do a joint course because the person interviewing me was incredulous that there could be computers in libraries (mid 1980's). The uni dept I joined was very encouraging and we got a wide exposure to the variety of devices around at the time (BBCs, Apple Macs, with dial up to news services using a squeaky modem!).

Does anyone have an easy guide to setting up Server 2003 to get it's time from a reliable outside source? This one has been nagging at me for ages, and I've tried looking on here and the web generally, but I need really easy step by step instructions. It would be lovely to finally get the time on our clients to be correct - they're synching to the server and the server is currently about ten minutes fast.

I have mixed XP and Win 7 clients on Server 2003 domain. Just ploughing through getting the Win 7 clients to behave properly. I use a vbs login script which is called from the user account in AD to set network printers. (I know this is prob not the best way to do it, but with mixed environment and NO TRAINING I am sticking with what is familiar). The network printer maps fine and is setting to be the default. But I can still see all the locally installed printers in Devices and Printers. This doesn't happen in XP. There is a part of the script that looks like it is supposed to delete printers before they are set. So is that not working, or is this normal behaviour in Win 7 and do I just have to put up with it?? I must emphasise I am doing this as a learn as you go along thing, so no complicated replies about how to do it with GPP please!
