We've had a visit from the Health and Safety inspectors from somewhere to look over our new building. They've told the office manager that there is now a rule that anyone using a laptop for more than an hour must have a docking station (presumably attached to a monitor and keyboard/mouse!). I can't find anything online after a short search session, other than general guidelines (ie. not legal requirements). This would affect staff on PPA, myself, and potentially any child using a laptop for more than an hour. We no longer have an IT Suite. Has anyone managed to find out any more about this?

Thanks. I didn't realise I could try and do it this way. Though I may need more detailed instructions to do it safely - only ever done one load hive before. Main issue is working out a safe time to do this within my working hours (ie. when no one is logged in to it). But thanks for giving me hope that I may be able to reliably fix this.

It worked!

Somehow at some point, a default file location for saving in Office 2003 seems to have been saved into the XP mandatory profile on our system. Unfortunately this references the share on our Server 2003 server. Which was fine until we migrated to Server 2012..... Basically, our students are trying to save files on XP laptops in Office 2003 and the system is not happy because Word etc are then trying to access the share on the old server. It's taken me a while to work out what was happening, as all our GPO file redirections are correct but there was obviously a conflict somewhere. By chance I found that Word has a default file location set in the mandatory profile. Presume it will be the same for excel, etc. It's not been set by the Office 2003 GPO so I must have saved it into the profile by accident. The only way I can think of to fix this is to edit the mandatory profile and remove as many references to default file locations in Office applications that I can find. The main issue with this is that I am worried that I will mess something else up during the editing. I doubt there's anyone out there who can help with this in some way that I haven't thought of, but I thought it was worth a try.... I am very definitely out of my depth and sinking fast

We had this issue on Server 2003 and it was indeed caused by a faulty driver. On that server, it got bad very quickly and stopped all printing very quickly.

Should have thought of that myself! Tried my laptop, also toshiba and win 7, and no issue with board on the mouse image front. Managed to replicate the drag up/down issue by being heavy handed on the board, and so turned flicks off. Syeljes (SMART UK support) got back to me and said it must an issue with the mouse on the laptop and nothing to do with the SMART software, as it happens on the Windows desktop as well. Think I may finally have solved the mouse image issue but will have to try this tomorrow: A Large Mouse Icon Appears Below the Pointer (124970) - SMART Technologies and Turn the touch pointer on or off In desperation, I typed "why can i see a mouse image on SMARTboard?" into Google and the third result was the SMART tech document above. Although it relates to a different older version of SMARTboard drivers, the issue is the same so I think this is the solution. No idea how this got turned on, but anyway....

Thanks. Flicks is on by default on all our Win 7 laptops, but no one else has reported this issue. Turned Flicks off and the drag up/down issue is gone.

I started out as a computer lab assistant after graduating, in the days when BBC computers and dial in modems were still in mainstream use, and then took a career break to look after children. I came back as a school techie to a completely different world of Windows and internet in my mid 30s. You are definitely not too old!

This course is modular so you can pay a bit at a time, distance learning with support. Some day I shall get round to doing it myself, but a techie in this area has found it useful: BTEC Award in Computer Engineering Level 2 - Home But as others have said, schools can be big on promises and small on actual action. They expect you to know everything about anything that has a switch to turn it on, and don't worry too much about how you become such an expert as long as it doesn't cost them anything. Not all schools, of course, but a lot.

Anyone? The computer mouse image appears whenever the user touches the board for anything, not just to close a window, and it is driving her mad. I have emailed SMART support, who have forwarded it to Steljes, but no reply as yet.

Using Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop connected to a SMARTboard 660i with UF75 projector. SMART Notebook version is 11, I think. When the user touches the board to close a window, a large image of a computer mouse appears on the screen nearby. Sometimes there is also a pop up where the board is touched, saying Drag Up Drag Down. I have set all the hardware settings for the whiteboard back to default, as far as I can tell. I am wondering if there is an accessibility setting somewhere in the software that is causing this? It's making it difficult to "click" on things to close or select them.

Just flagging up that IE 10 has caused issues with Integris G2 on a standalone laptop here. User reported slow loading after login - Desktop tab just shows Loading all the time and other tabs fail to show any data at all. User reported issue started last Wednesday and checked updates to see that IE 10 had been installed on an automatic update. Have rolled back to IE 9 and all fine again.

Can anyone recommend a supplier/installer for a hall projection system in the east anglia/east midlands region? We need a new system for a new build primary school. Just something simple - screen, projector and speakers suitable for the size (so someone would have to come and look at the space).

I got into a bit of a mess trying out @Gatt's GP setting for sorting out the multiple My Documents issue. Stupid idea to try a fresh user as the issue was coming from existing users. Anyway, I've managed to set up a safe and proper test for the policy with a user migrated from XP to Win 7 client. My Documents was renamed in share from username to My Documents. I applied the GPO and nothing seems to have changed in the share however. Possibly, as @Gatt said, I need to remove the desktop.ini files and then the policy will prevent the folder being renamed each time the user logs in on Win 7. Due to further investigation, I have also found that, in my setup at least , connecting home folder to \\servername\sharename\%username%\My Documents (in the user account profile tab) works and means that the user doesn't get the share folder renamed. It seems to work fine with user logged in to both XP and Win 7. No doubt a lot of what I do is bad practice, due to self-teaching. Migration to Server 2012 planned, with expert installation, and hopefully this will get me a properly functional setup!

@Gatt, I started with a clean user as a test - not logged in and with no folder in the share. It looks like it is a problem with the clean user login not being able to carry out the folder and start menu redirection, not the policy you gave me as i have removed that policy and it is still not redirecting start menu and folders.... I guess I must have been working with existing users up till now, although i didn't think that was the case, and I've now uncovered a new problem. No doubt your policy will do what I need it to do once I've fixed the other issue. Meanwhile, back to the drawing board....

The test did not go well, but I don't think it's necessarily the fault of this policy. Maybe I have something else set wrong somewhere. The policy on test resulted in the user not being able to access any of the Documents folders at all. I've done something wrong with permissions somewhere..... Will feed back at some future point when I've worked out what is going on.

I have set this to Disabled in User Config, as that is where my folder redirection is set up. I shall feed back on the effects so that anyone else looking at this thread will know what to do as well.

All teachers have a school owned laptop here. For supply, we have a bank of 6 laptops, mostly older machines. There is a generic Teacher username for supply teachers to log in with.
