Please can someone give me a bit more help with this tip that is in the Windows 7 Gotchas Sticky: I am currently using Windows Server 2003 and have mixed clients XP and Win 7. Where a user is new and first logs in on Win 7, the redirected folder is correctly named with the username in the share. The problem for me has started with a user that has been upgraded from XP to Win 7. Their share folder has been renamed My Documents in the share. Obviously if that happens to everyone, it will be a real nuisance to identify whose folder is whose. The redirected folder also seems to contain another My Documents folder. I have tried deleting the desktop.ini in the top level My Documents, but it looks like it changes back to being called My Documents again when the user logs in next time. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to remove all instances of desktop.ini at all levels within the folder?

Our emails have finally stopped after an awful lot of firm emails to them to remove us from their mailing list. We had them in for a quote in 2005! Never again! I now tell anyone who quotes for us that if they start pestering us for decisions we will definitely not choose them.

We've had to shelve the touch screen plan, due to the added cost of the SMART collaborative software licence that we would also need to buy to keep using the Notebook software (nearly £600 each). The SMART touch screen, which comes with the software licence included, is as expensive as the alternative with the extra licence.

Just an update to say I have installed Reflector (formerly Reflection) on two staff PCs and the teachers are loving it so far. Takes about 5 minutes to install and another couple of minutes to show the teacher how to connect. So far they are happily using the trial version, which cuts out after 10 minutes, but it looks like we will be looking to buy this soon. I looked at AirServer, but it only works with later than Vista and we still have some XP machines. We are about to try it with multiple connections so will post again when we've done so. I'll take your word for it! The affected account is our main school account. If they forward one of the messages to me, that will change the header, right?

It isn't on our DC at school. It is offsite and deployed by our Internet provider. We are a primary school. I can access the Exchange server for some functions by RDP. And we send and receive email by Outlook Web Access. Does that help?

Have asked the Internet Provider, and the answer is yes it does. I will emphasise that this issue is a sudden change after it had been working fine for a good few years.

The exchange server is based outside of our school and was set up by our Internet Provider. I suppose I am trying to get a solution to the problem on their behalf, which may be tricky as my knowledge of the subject is rubbish... But nothing ventured, as they say. The Internet Provider seems to have exhausted all their avenues of enquiry.

I'm married to one (making me a model railway widow) - does that count? Our entire garage is taken over with a GWR OO layout based around Didcot/Newbury branch lines, including a lot of scratch built station buildings. And it's a big garage! He's going to get me involved at some point making station nameboard signs on the computer.... And I've done a good job of reproducing brick paper for emergencies! Oh, and I get taken round old stations and photographed for scale . Better stop now, as I'm starting to sound very sad...

We are probably going down this route for our new Foundation and Year 1 classrooms. Looking at CleverTouch LCD screens, as saw them in action at Hartsholme Primary Academy in Lincolnshire. Advantage for us is not having the projector which means they can be low mounted without the projector getting in the way - great for little ones. Looking into getting adjustable height mounts for them. Should also be able to connect iPads. The price we've got for 55" CleverTouch is around the £2000 mark though. Not sure if this is in the right place. Our Exchange server and email are hosted by our Internet provider. Suddenly the spam filters are not working on the main school account. We access our emails using Outlook Web Access. Previously, mail would go into junk mail and if anything slipped through, we would right click the mail and add the sender to the blocked senders list. Suddenly nothing is going into the Junk Email folder at all. If we try to add spam mail to the blocked sender list, we just get a message to say the address is already in the blocked list. It means that the office is now having to trawl through all the spam before finding real emails; whereas previously the bulk of spam was dealt with straight to the junk email folder. The Internet provider is using Exchange 2007. I have been told that this is a known issue that happens randomly with Outlook 2010, although we use the web version of this, and that there is no fix despite the issue being raised about two years ago by some folk. This does seem to be the case when I have looked on the Internet. One thread online suggests it still happens in Outlook 2013. However, Edugeekers have an uncanny knack of fixing things....! Does flattery work on here???

If they are laptops, it is probably being caused by them not being properly shut down and then left unplugged too long so they don't shutdown properly. When restarted they go into startup repair, as stated above, which takes them back to a pre domain state. We had this happening and I followed the advice on this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/83381-windows-7-clients-dropping-off-domain.html Plus I reminded all staff about the need to make sure laptops were shut down properly before the lids were closed.

I am setting up a new standalone Win 7 64-bit laptop in school. It was running IE 10 but I uninstalled that by removing the update. Now running IE 9. The issue is that when I try to download anything through IE, it fails the first time and at the second attempt (clicking Retry) it downloads the file and changes the file extension so that instead of being .exe or .pdf, it becomes _exe or _pdf. IE is also failing to open a pdf when I choose open instead of save - no error message, it just does nothing. I can deal with the file extension change by just renaming it, but my users are going to get confused! I've done the setup on other Win 7 64-bit laptops, and they have been fine. This is the first one I've had to roll back to IE 9, and the first one to behave like this. I've tried Googling the issue with no success. I am guessing there is a setting somewhere that is set too high, but no idea where to look.

I have Spiceworks installed on our old cache pilot machine after Windows XP was put on it. Primary school with only one server doing everything, running Server 2003, so didn't fancy putting it on the server. It is slow, and I haven't yet set up all the features yet, but it has integrated with AD fine.

Not an Open University course and "only" level 2, but one of our local techies is working through this. They are employed full time and have managed to negotiate the school paying for the modules and giving them a morning a week to work on it. I'm sure the more knowledgeable folk on here will comment on it's suitability....

I removed the IE 10 update and IE Maintenance has reappeared. Best option for now when I only have the two standalones to deal with. However, went away to do something else and when I came back and shut down it started configuring Windows.... Possibly it's downloaded the pesky update again and I'll have to repeat the removal on Monday!

Just installed Reflector (not called Reflections from this link) on a Win 7 64 bit PC. Had to open iTunes and set Airplay to the laptop name (rather than My Computer) and then it all ran as per the instructions on the Reflector Getting Started webpage. Only stutters at the start and then very good (wireless). Audio is quiet but that may be the laptop speakers, and I assume it would be louder through the IWB speakers. For the setup time it took me, I'm very impressed. Now need to look at the cost to purchase.... I guess the general issue means that we would be better off buying something like CleverTouch screens in the future, rather than SMARTboards, as I think these can take iPads as well as PC/laptops and presumably you get the full touch capability too.

I've hit a problem with GP and IE 10 too. I have two new staff laptops, both of which are standalone multiuser. Win 7 and IE 10. I usually set the proxy in local GP so I don't have to do it for each created user. Any ideas what I do now??? I only have server 2003 for a few more months anyway.... Can I use RSAT on a Win 7 machine to edit IE 10?

I'm just looking at setting all this up and wanted one ID per year group. How did you do the setting up of the ID with date of birth and security questions, etc. Just choose something generic and write it down?

Thanks to everyone who helped out with this. I have learnt a lot from you all and from what I found on the web once I knew where to look. I have now had a decent converation with our ISP and they have provided me with the county DNS IP addresses. Hopefully I'll be able to set these up next week. Thinking back, the clock probably started to slip after we changed from LA as ISP to Updata, and some of the equipment/routing changed.
