I've been asked by our head of English to find some suitable subject-related Moodle themes for them to use on their English department sections of the VLE. Now, I have been having a search this morning and haven't really come up with anything. Does anyone know somewhere good to find this sort of thing, or even have some good English themes they know of? I was an AMBCS for a time, but personally didn't find I got anything of benefit as a member. I actually resigned my membership after a couple of years as I was spending money on the membership fee for no return. I thought it would help with applications etc, but in the education sector no-one seemed to know what it was!

Depending where the OP is using it, the pre-amplifier is probably the cause of the hum. I'd guess it is connected between the PC output and the speakers, which is a completely incorrect application for it. The pre-amplifier listed is an RIAA Phono pre-amp, which is intended to take the output from a record player (which would be at an order of magnitude lower voltage than a PC output) and feed it to a line input. The RIAA bit also refers to some magic the pre-amp does to provide correction to a turntable input, which will adversely affect other sources. I would recommend disconnecting the pre-amp, and trying some of the other suggestions to improve the output from the PC. How does it sound with headphones connected?

Not sure exactly which one, but our Reprographics department have an HP DesignJet (possibly bigger than you want) and that is completely awesome. The quality and versatility of the output is stunning. Not sure how much they cost, though. Might be worth a look?

Hello, OK, so here is yet another request for recommendations for a hosting company - with a slight twist! I need to find a company that can provide us with basic hosting for some smaller sub-sites of our main site. Main requirements are going to be serving a couple of .uk domains, one with a few subdomains, and one just a straight site. Storage space isn't going to be a huge issue (a few gig will be plenty) but unlimited bandwidth would be nice. The biggest requirement is going to be paying for it all by invoice, ideally all together as a single lump. So, any suggestions for a company that can do all that this way please! Cheers, Chris.

If they are the little rectangular ones (about 2mmx1mm) that lie more or less flat on the board, they are surface mount ones which are really difficult to solder without specialised equipment.

If you can find one in budget, the Samsung NC10s really are the dogs. More an ultraportable than a netbook, with a roomy 120Gb hard disk and XP Home. I love mine, and so does anyone who sees it. Quite worthy of the best netbook crown it seems to get if you ask me!

I think you'll find that the restore discs that come with a Mac will have OS X and iLife on - because Apple bundle OS X and iLife with new Macs. However, retail OS X disks that you can buy from Apple will NOT include iLife, which is sold as separate package to retail OS X. Office:Mac is a completely separate product and will not come with any OS X disks (except for a Trial version with some restore disks). The 'Home and Student' version of Office:Mac 2008 sells for under £100 for 3 licences.

Well, depending on how they've been stored, you might find the disks or the disk drive is knackered. Alternatively, do you know how to make it run them? BBCs don't work like PCs - they won't boot from a disc on power-up, they boot almost instantly from ROM. To start a program from disk, you normally put it in Drive 0, then press - at the command prompt to make it load the disk.

Isn't there a danger here of EduGeek becoming too big and losing sight of the core values and the main function which keeps members here - Education techs sharing advice and helping each other.

You'll always find someone to dispute an unfounded statement - and it's me for this one! We've driven Renaults in the family for probably 20-odd years now - We've had a couple of Fords in between but always go back to the Renaults and haven't suffered any major problems at all (touch wood!) Now we did have a Peugeot many moons ago, and that WAS a heap of crap!

Hi all, I'm looking for some tips and info on how those of you using Moodle manage and monitor the messaging system. I have been asked to keep an eye on messages being sent to check for inappropriate content, but at the moment I can't find a reasonable solution. As it stands, the only thing I can do is generate all of the logs for particular days and then scroll through all the pages of it looking for 'Message Write' in the activity column. Very time consuming. We don't have messaging the in the activity filter box at the top of the logs page. Our Moodle is hosted by the LA externally so server access is very limited, although I have an Administrator account for Moodle itself. Anyone have any suggestions or better ways of doing it? I'd be grateful to hear. Cheers

Yep, I bought an NC10 at the weekend, been playing with it for several hours so far, and still on 65-odd% of the first battery charge. Quite phenomenal really. At 100% battery with the screen on minimum brightness, just after boot my battery gauge was offering over 7 hours of life. They seem more like an expensive ultra-portable too - streets ahead of the Eee PC 700 it's replacing.

Any more info on this one? Can anyone confirm whether this is a national offering, or just one particular store? The spec of Aspire One mentioned is on sale on their website for £198 still...
