Another vote for VIPRE here - we use it internally, and if you buy (or have bought) a Smoothwall product in the UK, you can get VIPRE desktop licences at a reduced rate It really is top stuff though. Nice and nippy, few FPs, good catch rate, and they're a nice bunch too are the Sunbelt lot (even their new masters @ GFI are ok!)

Is that for all sites? It's kind of expected behaviour with HTTPS, but can't think why it would break under HTTP.

Are you using any sort of outbound filtering on the smoothwall? Have you got all the latest patches? I believe there's an extended timeout in one of the later patch sets.

Sounds like you are using smoothwall just as a web proxy - in which case 1935 won't be hitting it - and its either your gateway (I assume ISA) or the LEA...

"Per group settings" - check certificates is probably on... it is the default as its a great defence against ssl anonymisers.

Have you got any SSL security on, like certificate checking? That can tend to break things! We're looking at ways to allow skype without letting the world and his dawg free access to the interwebs. Hard, it is, though.

You could use powerline, or even wifi-where-you-can to bridge between wifi access points. Its fairly hard to buy an access point these days on the consumer market - most have routers built in (probably what leads to your question) but you can get em - I used to have a pair bridging wired networks in a very old, tall house, for example. Some WAPS have a "repeater mode" including the belkin one I bought for my folks - but I do now have "belkin regret" so i'd advise you steer clear. If this is just for internet access, you could also try 802.11a - you'll go down to 11Mbit/s but that may not matter, and 11a's wavelength has better benetrative properties than b or g. HTH.

You may need to open port 1935 (on your firewall, smoothwall or otherwise) as it uses RTMP...

Yes it does - i'd avoid using the bad language (non english) cats - they're a bit hit & miss, we are phasing them out in favour of including non-english stuff in the regular lists - they are only really there for "back compatibility".

Some thought it was OK.. I didn't - service was even worse than usual (and you usually put up with their s--t for great steak) and I ordered a rare rib-eye, which was one of the worst bits of meat i've eaten in a LONG time. We all thought the fries they served with them had changed - RobF suggested to the waitress that this may be because the old ones were hand cut chips, and these are out of a freezer bag - went down badly!

It's possible to transparently proxy with 1 nic, but it's not pleasant. If you have 2 gateways you may find it even harder....

Generally skype will traverse proxies - but it does not like any form of HTTPS mangling - either cert checking or full interception. A chap I was talking to on the Equiinet stand (I was just hanging out there for 5) at BETT suggested that some vendors have a technique for differentiating skype connects from reg'lar browsers. I shall be getting the packet captures out next week to see if this is indeed the case. Meanwhile - check your filter logs to see if any connections are being attempted over "HTTPS" to bare IP addresses and getting blocked...
