SmoothWall Server Certificate error issue
tom_newton replied to MrEprise's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
My favourite thing about this thread was @3s-gtech calling someone a "drain blockage". I will use that. -
Youtube doesn't like ad blockers

Probably not. We will look to work with google to see if there is a sensible way to turn off ads that does not involve us fighting with them -

Smoothwall: From Hero’s to Zero
tom_newton replied to chrisjako's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We did have a few teething troubles with some customers - largely due to our desire to keep on-prem and cloud in sync. While the support team have been rebuilding themselves, in product we have also improved checks and safeguards! -

I'm sure we will get that solved -does sound very unusual. Hope folks have had a pretty decent experience with support so far? From this side, things have felt better than in prior years -
Google Chromebooks - Smoothwall Cloud Filter
tom_newton replied to ssouth's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Definitely log with support. Are your chromebooks clearing profiles on every login? This usually means more files pulled down on boot.- 24 replies

SmoothWall Server Certificate error issue
tom_newton replied to MrEprise's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
You can definitely bypass - but concur with others, give the site owners hell while you do. What I would do is create a new custom list (and review it every few months) and then apply a "do not inspect" policy (guardian/https inspection/manage policy) -

Switch on-prem to alerting through the cloud. Currently feature switched, but will become the default. Whack in a ticket. Tom -

RMSafetyNet vs. Smoothwall vs. Senso
tom_newton replied to Koldov's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Monitoring and filtering are quite different beasts. I largely agree that once you are over the install part, IT should not have a great deal to do with the monitoring bit day to day. Largely because software like Smoothwall Monitor doesn't need a technical mind to decipher what's going on, as one of the mods will have written a description, there'll be a screenshot, etc.. which is why filter alerts (and often monitoring products that are just filters that have grown arms and legs) tend to remain the purview of IT, because nobody but us techie sorts can understand what the alerts mean. Safetynet, is I believe, rather more in the filtering nature (though am happy to be corrected by any RMers knocking about). So it's still a collaboration between IT and the DSLs - IT have to make sure it works, occasionally log in and see that all the devices are a-ok, but should rarely need to help unravel an alert, and the DSL is the first person "alerted", IYSWIM. Happy to show you a bit more if you want to talk to someone who is not sales, and knows their way round the tech, there's always me or one of my colleagues in the product team. -
Ah, so it's lots of different computer accounts, rather than a few service accounts? Have you considered moving to agent based (cloud) filtering? Might be more straightforward than idex.
-
This is usually because something makes a request as the computer first... eg AV or something similar. I am sure there's an "ignore computery looking things" switch somewhere... but my memory fails. @ibpalle?

Smoothwall Cloud Filtering / Reporting
tom_newton replied to mdking's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Cloud reporting pulls data from your on-prem and your on-device filters. On-device works in Edge and Chrome, and will work in firefox at some point (we have an alpha) -
Yes, absolutely - start by contacting your CSM if you know them, or feel free to email me - [email protected] - and I will hunt em down

Prepare to be surprised Joel - it IS coming (largely facilitated by the change of tech provider, which was due to Smoothwall becoming part of the Qoria group) and probably before xmas -
The idex system wasnt up to is - that's been replaced in Maiden, so we might be able to do so

Android on BYOD - Smoothwall
tom_newton replied to E_G_R2's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
It's more of a WiFi AP thing than a Smoothwall thing - we suggest saying "do not verify" on the Android devices https://kb.smoothwall.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005291260-Connecting-an-Android-phone-to-an-802-1x-Wifi-SSID-using-RADIUS -

These things are increasingly hard - you may have seen some of our efforts at lobbying the big firms to "do better" for Education. It is a long slog. -
SPlit brain DNS might do it for you? https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/networking/dns/deploy/dns-policies-overview

We have thought of this, but worried that we wouldn't get the latency of change fast enough. Could be something that happens post Maiden.

Smothwall - Appliance or VM?
tom_newton replied to steveg's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
VM is fine if you want to do that. Some hardy souls run bare metal on their own tin (also fine, but there can be compatibility issues we can't guarantee to be able to fix)
