Without being able to provide too much back story, we have inherited 2 RedHat servers running Bradford Campus Manager that were previoously configured and run by the LA. Just wondered if anybody had any experience of administration of these or even more useful any documentation of any kind for the software? Thanks in advance

Thanks for the info, I assume you are using UAG as a remote solution? TBH we have only just started looking at solus 3 as the system was setup in 2009 and hasnt been reviewed until now. We are looking at using app-v now too and in our tests this has been quite succesful but again updating is something we need to look at and test to make sure it wont cause problems. We are in a good situation though in that we can test local installs and app-v but still have remote-app as a backup.

We use ricoh directly, also running their print management software called equitrac, both very good at what they do IF installed and setup correctly.

@FN-GM and @trolley01 interesting you have no issues with sims as remote app. How many terminal servers? Spec? and how many concurrent users? Perhaps you could have a look at my thread here? http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/92126-sims-net-terminal-services-remote-app.html

Just as a note, we have a lot of issues with sims as a remoteapp, with crashing and freezing and we dont seem to be alone. This will need a lot of testing to see if it is a solution that works for you.

Interesting theory, but I have never heard of a server not starting up because it cant contact a DC EDIT: just need FN-GM's post, very interesting. We arent in a posistion to change our setup anyway, and do cold boots quite regularly so you know what they say, if it aint broke....

Im sure there is probably a built in windows solution but i highly recomend this software. Computer and Internet Monitoring Software - Forensic Software Policy Central takes screen captures if any banned word ever appears on a student's screen, you can get a lot of false positives but even if it is just 0.1% you pick up it is worth it. Also, back to your original post, you can setup an AUP that shows on every logon and it records, who when and where this AUP is accepted, making tracking machine and students is very very easy.

Oh and slighty related and something I learned the hard way! Make a note of the static IP addresses of the hyper-v hosts, just for that day when your DNS server goes down and you can get on to reboot!

We are looking at moodle as one of the options for when our current VLE contract expires. As part of this I have been testing some concepts I had on transfering data from sims to a remote moodle web server. This work has gone really well, and after a couple of days work I have fully linked timetables and attendance data being transfered from our local sql server to our external moodle server using a small script which runs on the sims server sending data. I have not yet looked at provissioning student/teacher/parent accounts from sims as one of the aims for the school is to have a single sign on for all ICT provissions. Here is a screen shot of how the student see's their timetable. UPDATE: cant upload pictures through school proxy, I blame the dodgey technicians here! Basically what I have learnt from my couple of days I know that anything is possible with moodle given a little time and effort, either from 3rd party or personal development.

I would say yes. Ours are, and even at a bsic level of manging updates/av and logon it is an advantage. Not sure on exact technical details or reasons why though, we have 4 clustered servers so I assume that has something to do with it too although I have little to no knowledge on clustering

I would speak to an Acer rep. They currently have the iconia which is a brilliant piece of hardware, we have trialed an android and win7 version and can see them being incrediable with windows 8 on. Acer education have a trial's list and as soon as they get one with win8 on it we should hopefully get it, obviously we cant just take one of their trial stock a re-image, which is a shame! They also have erthernet ports which means we can pxe boot and image them with MDT which is brilliant!

Thanks, nice to see that there are options. A bit more background, we used to run the setup you described up until 2009 from when sims was first installed in the school back in the 90's I believe. In september 2009 we moved into a new school with the setup described below, one of the features of our network is an NEC flex with 4 physical servers clustered running hyper-v and the terminal servers mentioned above are all virtual servers. An issue we have concerns about is that the majority of sims instances are running on wireless staff laptops, we have a couple of machines running local copies of sims but they are desktops of domain admins so this covers all of the possible update issues. Staff need instant access, we cant have the problem we used to have where an update is run and each workstation takes 10 minutes to install the update when a teacher is waiting to take their register. I do like the idea of expanding trials slightly so wireless laptops with loacked down staff accounts and seeing what issues come up, as they will always have remoteapp as a backup anyway.

Hi All, I work in a secondary school with around 1400 students where we use Sims.net and lesson monitor for every session of the day. The setup we have is using 5 terminal services running 2008R2 with session broker load balancing, staff have a sims.rdp shortcut which logs them on to the fdarm and runs sims in a remote app. This is a good solution for us management wise as we have about 150 staff all using sims on a daily basis and individually managing updates on each laptop/desktop is not a viable option, especially with the added pains of windows 7 sp1, a very locked down network and UAC. It is, however, my personal opinion that sims is not up to being run in this manner, Microsoft reccomend only scorm programs be used (and I think sims is a long way off that model!) as others can cause issues, sims through the remote app can hang, crash, freeze and generally be all around slow however a local client install suffers the poor speed it is more stable. Does anybody have experience with a similar setup? How stable is sims overall in a remote app for other schools? What other sollutions would you reccomend? Also, I was hoping to do some benchmarking by timing a single consistant action in sims but I cant really find anything that fits the criteria, anything on that would be great too. If you need any more info please let me know. Thanks Sam UPDATE: Just thought to add this, terminal servers are all xeon 2.8 or higher with 8gb ram.

I dont know if anybody is still watching this thread but the easiest possible way is from the terminal (home key + t) just type sudo synaptic Its basically add and remove programs for linux!
