Hyper - V Pass through disk vs VHD Fix
british_government replied to Rozzer's topic in Windows Server 2008
Just a note on SQL and hyper-v. For large database systems the ideal setup is 4 physical disks for a sql server, although 2 is good and 3 is most common. The 4 physicals disks are used one each for OS, Transaction Log, Master DB and Application DB. We currently have issues with our Hyper-V sims server running from a SAN, as no matter how many VHD's we create they could all sit on the same physical disk on the SAN, or be spread across disks on the SAN shared by other disk intensive servers. Anyway, the point im slowly making is if setting up a SQL server in Hyper-V, I would use VHD's but split onto different physical disks on the hyper-v server. -
Anybody using this feature yet? I started setting up a test environment for this last week and just finishing off this morning, I wondered if anybody was using this or planning to use it in production? Also when googling I found this news article on replica Hurricane Sandy and Hyper-V Replica - Welcome to the US SMB&D TS2 Team Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

This is the official Microsoft line, when your account is upgraded only the "Exchange Online (Plan 1) for Students" is available, I contact Microsoft directly about this and it does take exactly 14 days before you can purchase other plans (even the free ones) which is an intentional design of their system. This is the exact setup I experienced was exactly 14 days after upgrade that we could add these plans, if you are telling me this is wrong you will need to contact 365 support and let them know it isn't intentional and is an issue.
-
Im not sure I saw this answer for the purchasing extra subscriptions, the A2 plans are only available to add 2 weeks after the first 365 signup/transfer. Also as we are asking questions, has anybody got user pictures working with directory sync? They are showing in lync but not owa, and meet the 96x96px rule and are only 2kb

Interesting points on spiceworks, I tried it about 4 years ago, using all the full scanning and helpdesk features for a couple of months. Sounds like I didn't give it a fair chance, optimise it well enough, or it has had severe improvements since then! In terms of functionality, if you can get it running well, I would recommend spiceworks at least as first call.
-
Just one more thing on spiceworks, it will slow down every machine it scans when it scans them, so you will only want to run this overnight, which for laptops and netbooks is useless. Back to helpful suggestions, I custom wrote a mysql, php solution for the school which I have been thinking about releasing as the school have given me permission to do so. If anybody is interested drop me a PM and I can build a version and get it to you.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention one of them was only 4 weeks old, luckily the one that survived! And this just popped up in my emails!

I have seen these actually, drive over them in a mini, 1 day in a school I bet they could be broken....... Latest case was white 3 sugars, stickiest laptop ever, caused by coffee anyway!

Ha, my girlfriend had candles lit in front of the dvd player, opened the drawer to change the dvd and went to find one, dvd drawer had opened over the candles and was not in a very good condition!

I have worked in my school for 6 years now and until last week had, suprisingly, never had a staff laptop with coffee spilled on it. Now we have had 2, one totally dead and one that we left to dry and actually still works, all be it smelling of tesco's finest roast! How common is this? Do we just had a particularly clumsy set of staff this year? Also, I post safe in the knowledge the worst thing I have ever done was spill a pot noodle onto a desktop keyboard, which still works today!!!!

Hosting multiple websites for ICT course?

This is a really nice piece of documentation for IIS with AD if you want to go down that route. How to setup AD FTP User isolation -
Hosting multiple websites for ICT course?
british_government replied to mikeglover's topic in Web Development
Just out of interest, why not use IIS? I am a LAMP man through and through but was asked the same question for the school here, took about half an hour to setup on IIS using AD authentication. FTP access to file root for each user then one server with a list of directories, one for each user. -

vlan demo.zip See attached, I have just put that together quickly using a few different vlans. There are many benefites of a system like this, for example security as you can apply different access lists to different vlans for different permissions. As a basic example only machines on the ADMIN vlan can telnet to the switch, in practise you would have this as ssl and probably only 1 or 2 machines, but the idea is the same. What you could try is assigning an access list so wireless devices can only ping the server vlan, but no others? And another note, the only downside to vlanning really is that inter-vlan traffic goes through your router rather than just the switch, as it is changing networks so must be routed. The router is running a simple rip setup.

Thanks Both, our existing mounts are too small and chipbaord was rejected as a proposal. Our building is only 3 years old so everything has to look perfect and pretty! Alex, I will look into that mount thanks, obviously the price is very appealing in comparison!

Hi All, I have seen quite a few people discussing the casio laser-LED projectors which we have been looking at for some time now. I wondered if anybody had experience of mounting them on existing SMS projector beams and if this unislide is compatible with the casio short throw's? SMS Projector ShortThrow UniSlide Black I am 90% sure it is compatible but having somebody say "yes I have done this" would be great Sam

just had a look at your original upload, for info, assuming the router is yours you wouldn't use RIP, set a default route on your router for anything it doesnt know and just shove it out of your interface to the internet either with: ip default-network 12.16.218.35 or ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 fastEthernet 0/1 EDIT: and just looked at your vlans, VLAN1 should always be management vlan, so really you should use another for all your machines, or possible a separate vlan for desktops, servers and wireless devices to isolate potential issues. I can put together an example if you want? Or I can butt out
