  1. i dont understand why the administration side would show red ticks now beside the users and the clients cant find the users now
  2. this was all working fine until today for some reason no the clients cant tell me what the balance is or there usernames
  3. i have on the server version 8.0.135.110 but the clients are 8.0.133.90
  4. thats a good question i have done all the updates on the server side so the print manager is up to date but i have never checked to see if there is another version of the client side
  5. Hi Everyone was hoping someone might be able to answer my question. We are running print manager plus on our server version 8 and for some reason all users are showing a small red tick beside each name now all client computers connected are showing users as unknown users and giving them unlimited printer credits. Is there a reason why this has happened? before i used to click on each user and hit ok and they would get a green tick and user was recognised on client but thats not working for some reason
  6. because there is a working DNS server on the main server i have just set the backup server as a Global catalog server and its configuring active directory domain services at the moment really thank you for all your suggestions with getting this working again.
  7. everything worked great guys i was able to change back to original name and IP settings and add as a domain controller in an exsisting domain should i also select DNS server tick box if i already have the main server as the DNS does this just replicate DNS settings incase the main server should crash? I have got the Global catalog selected but not sure about the DNS sever if my main server is already the DNS do i just untick this then
  8. now that it has joined the domain i am able to change the name back to the old server and i am going to try and change the IP address back thanks for all your help guys
  9. Guys thank you for all your help whats happened now when i changed the address for the DNS server to point to the IP of the server it has now allowed me to join the school domain.
  10. I have changed the name of the server to WCB-DC03 and given it a different IP address from the previous old server but i am still getting this "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain." everytime i try to add it to the domain. All info on previous server has been removed from sites and services and also all info in active directory Domain controllers so there shouldnt be any information on the previous server left (hopefully).
  11. i have used the adive that MYK-It and yourself have given me and read over the links for removeal of a domain controller the first two links would be great if the old server worked at all as i cannot switch it back on now with no respone i did a force removeal of the old dc rebooted the server checked that i could get an IP address from DHCP and then changed it to a static IP address but when i go to add the server (with no roles) onto the domain i am landed with the same message about DNS i also tried naming the server WCB-DC03 and changing the IP address to a different static value then adding onto the network but still get the same DNS message error
  12. i tried the forcing removal of domain controller first thing this morning hoping that it would clean up any metadata but it still doesnt allow me to add the new server to the domain with the old servers name and ip. It is a 2008 domain the old server had 2008 on it as well
  13. that was it exactly i never properly demoted the previous server and yes i have called this one exactly the same and given it the same IP as the other server is no longer available on the network at all. I was reading that if i log onto the main server and delete the old server from active directory with it being server 2008 it should remove all info about the old server which i have done this morning but for some reason still get the same error message when trying to join the new one to the domain. is there no way that i will be able to give this new serve the same details ie Name and IP address as the old server?
  14. so this needs to be run on my main server (server 2008 32bit standard) to allow for another server (server 2008 32bit standard) to be included as another domain controller all allow replication of the active directory? could this be the reason the server wont join the domain at the moment
  15. my exsisting domain is 32bit server 2008 and its the same for the new server as well.
  16. hi imiddleton25 yes i switched the firewall off completley on the new server. Jamesreedersmith no thats something i didnt do now so i do this on the new WCB-DC02 server before joining to the domain
  17. the error message i am getting is: "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the doamin being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain. " my main server is AD, DHCP, DNS, Print server, AV server, file server and i did have a 2nd server which would replicate active directory but it ran out of storage so i added this new server on and give it the same IP address as the old and also the same name as the old server which is off completley. hope this helps in solving this problem really dont know what it is ive done wrong because all clients join the domain with no problems when i am doing a rebuild.
  18. Hi everyone hoping someone can give me an answer to this. Recently i have added a backup server for Active directory onto my network but the problem i am having is now i have the server working, i have installed server 2008 standard and done all the updates havent added active directory or anything but i have been trying to join our domain. My problem now is that i have set all the IP settings and DNS settings i have pinged the main server and also checked ipconfig /all and checked that the DNS settings are right which they are but when i try to join the domain i get an error that the server cannot check the DNS settings are right on the main server. I have tried uninstalling the NIC and reinstalling and also tried switching off the firewall but still cannot join the domain. The new server can see the main server under network but its showing a on a workgroup and not the domain. The new server can also access the internet with no problems just seems to be when i try to add it onto my Domain. I have also check under active directory and have created an account for the server and just called it WCB-DC02. Do i need to install the active directory role so that this will replicate from server 1 over to this DC02? i was waiting until the server had connected to the domain before doing this is that right? thank you in advance.
  19. hi gizmo its around 10 or so just to cover, parts, toner, printers, switches, cabling and other bits and peices. just out of interest what would others normally get for your budgets if you's dont mind me asking to run a school of around 800 pupils including 60 odd staff
  20. I was looking at upgrading my current system which will go up to run duel quad core processors with 24gb of ram and more hard drive space. This should be useful for a virtual server although with current budget constraints i still am not 100% certain with the SAN solution even a cheapish solution i was looking at was still going to be costing around 3-4000 which at present is alot of money if taken from my budget.
  21. I have seen alot of people moving towards the SAN opition i just thought it was very expensive to get setup for additional storage space across a network for a school of only 7-800 pupils? what benefits could be delivered from using a SAN
  22. thank you both for getting back to me. Gav. I am not sure i cant see my budget changing it hasnt gone up any in the last 3-4 years to be honest its around 10. All our kids are back next week so it is something that i am trying to look at for a holiday period possibly introduce it more next year. To be honest we really dont have big files going around our network mainly photoshop files and some small movies to be totally honest. Synak. I would like to think about a SAN and moving towards virtulization at some point i totally understand that at some i was going overkill if the likes of the Antivirus, AD, DNS and DHCP didnt use up that much i possibly just keep it on the one server and have a seperate server for the file server which would get hammered the most with constant use.
  23. does this sound right or do you think i am just going a bit over kill with everything? we have 770 pupils and 60 staff but numbers could increase for computers over the next few years depending of course on funds
  24. Hi guys Just wanted to ask this question here get some views on this. We have a new legacy network everything is running well but i am looking at backup at the moment. Currently we run 180 xp machines off 1 server our main DC. Server-1 (quad core, 4gb, 500GB raid 5, 1gb network connection) Domain Controller DNS DHCP File Server Active Directory Anti Virus Print Server Backup I do have one old server which i am also using as a backup to domain controller and active directory. Server - 2 (2 x 1 single core 1ghz processor, 4GB ram, Raid 5 35gb, fibre network connection) Active directory (Backup) Domain controller (Backup) I am just looking over everything and thinking that i really should have most of this on another server eg: 1 server as File Server 1 server Antivirus and Print Server 1 server DNS and DHCP 1 server Domain controller, active directory 1 server Domain Controller, active directory (Backup) would this sound right with everyone? also if possible what specs do you think would be useful? for the likes of the antivirus and print server i am sure this wouldnt need much to run could run this almost on a desktop but just wanted to see what everyone thinks?
  25. Thank you I just put the hp procurve switches in today removed the old 3coms and put 3 new procurves in and linked this together. The 3 switches are connected together at 1000mb stable connection server as well is connected all I need to do now is purchase the mini-gbic module so I can link one of the procurve switches to the fibre links for the other cabinets and then begin replacing the other switches with the new procurve ones over the year. Thank you for replying you confirmed what I was thinking thank you
