  1. thank you very much i will take a look through this it does say that administrators can block files from being saved great just what i was looking for stop these from being made or saved.
  2. would this stop pupils from making the .bat files? and also would it stop pupils running .exe files on their usb pens
  3. file filters i havent seen that now i never used the 2003 r2 i had some experience more with server 2000 then went right onto 2008 which was a bit of a change
  4. Hi Everyone We are having a big problem here with pupils creating cmd files and bat files now at the min it doesnt really do much but is there any way in which i can stop this from happening. If they try to use cmd it is blocked and they do get the message the administrator has restricted access is there anyway i can stop this from happening even when kids have created there own? I would also like to be able to restrict access to .exe being run from memory sticks is there any step by step that i could run through to stop this.
  5. Hi everyone just an update on this printer so far it does seem to print word art although it has an issue when printing 3D image wordart it doesnt print word art style 11 and some 3d word art images it tries to print but they just come out as lines. Could this be a break in communication between the server and the jet direct box or the jet direct box and the printer?
  6. Yes having a space between the WHERE and = and then the = and "Microsoft" does affect the filter working i removed the spaces and them removed the links to the GPO's and reapplied and restarted the workstations and it seems to have worked at the moment there are no problems pupils have there my documents and the same restrictions as before are still on.
  7. is it possible because i have a space between Where = "Microsoft" that this may affect it
  8. no ive changed the name back and for some reason some of the polices are not apply i dont know what ive done wrong ill change it back here for the mean time because pupils and some staff have lost there my documents link
  9. Ah i had a space at the " Microsoft" instead of "Microsoft"
  10. or is it because i use local profiles i would need to delete all the profiles before anything would take affect? because its possible there local profile has held something before the change which is why they are maybe seeing things that they shouldnt because the policies all look right nothing really changed other than the filters.
  11. i have a classic ADM running would this have been affected by the change?
  12. great thank you just noticed now that some things have changed when i have applied the filters, i had it set up that pupils could not change the name of my computer or my documents or if it did it just reset back to normal when they logged off but now it hasnt also my network places has appeared on their desktops
  13. I have linked all my polices at the moment now to Windows XP filter just going to test to make sure that nothing has changed regards pupils accounts and staff accounts. From here then do i start making new GPO's and apply a windows 7 professional filter to these?
  14. we are only running all 32bit at the moment havent really taken a look at running 64 bit although we do have a couple of vista laptops but i am sure if i manage to get this working could i not create another filter for vista?
  15. so i create a filter and link it to all of my xp ones the filter is something like this is it? Select * from Win32_OperatingSystem where Caption = " Microsoft Windows XP Professional" is that right for the windows xp filters
  16. I have different OU's set up for each department in the school but i set the GPO's for students under the pupil / students folder same for staff the only GPO i have for the stations would be installing software per department. How can i run different policies for pupils and staff depending on which machine they are logged into. I have planned to come in and create two different OU's (XP and 7) and then create the departments in each of those depending on the OS on the computers. But if i have policies already set up for when a pupil logs in not depending on what computer they log in this wont work.
  17. can you explain just a bit more WMI filters? is this just a way of filtering out the windows xp GPO's and the windows 7 GPO's?
  18. ok ill try the RSAT on my windows 7 machine and see if i can start making a new ICT OU with new GPO's in there for only windows 7 see how i get on with that. Thank you very much for your help with this
  19. ok thats a good idea just create a windows xp OU with the rooms which have the xp machines in it and then a windows 7 OU again with the rooms which have the 7 machines. is it recommended it start from scratch with the gpo for 7 and not copy the xp gpo's
  20. ok thank you i will try this in the morning, i was working on it today and couldnt understand that while i was remote in the server there was very little windows 7 GPO's everything was more vista and xp. I did get a couple of things working folders, themes, some restricted access but there is still more i would need to get sorted out before rolling it out to the new machines and also have to make sure that it doesnt affect the windows xp machines at all.
  21. ah right ok so the remote administration client allows me to change GPO's only on the windows 7 machine but this is linked to the server 2008 GPO is that right? sorry i am just trying to get my head around it
  22. so ill be using the client machine to change GPO's how does this work when i roll out all the machines ?
  23. thank you for the reply so quick i will give them a ring in the morning see what it is going to cost. Is there a way of getting the windows 7 GPO's from R2 and running them in server 2008 standard?
  24. Just a quick question i am hoping someone can answer for me. Is there a cost for upgrading from server 2008 standard to server 2008 r2 standard? i know that the CALS carry over from 2008 to 2008 r2 but what i didnt know was is there a cost for the upgrade and if so what would it be?
  25. At the min i have no problems during login with pupil account everything seems to login in under 30secs which i am happy with. The user can also open their documents and everything seems to work at the min. for some reason the All Programs everything is missing i know that i am redirecting the start menu for all xp clients going to look at why it is missing for windows 7. And the users start menu and taskbar seems to be the old windows default not the new aero theme which is applied to mine has to be a GPO stopping this.
