I second net support notify. Recently implemented here as part of the lockdown policy.

I got some good tips and ended up copying pasting parts of other schools policy by searching through school websites in your area or even across the country. You can see most are much alike but some may have adapted a idea which may stand out from the others. Worth a shot

As far as I am aware we have not had any issues for as long as I can remember. I can check again tomorrow for you. In the mean time I would say this is a localised issue and echo @rad advice try again this coming week and open a support ticket if the symptoms persist

Our slt aren’t that logical. My suggestion of locking rooms and asking for increased staff vigilance made them look at me in a way as if I had taken away something so dear to them. Think hell would freeze over first before a logical decision like asking staff to take 10 seconds before the end of lesson to check. It’s not as if the teachers would have to actually do it but if the students thought they were it would at least make some of the students think twice It’s sad to say it’s always been like that. I remember when mice had balls and they would go missing, and as a junior tech I was tasked with supergluing the locking mechanism. Snore

We, like I think every school, is one of the most annoying support calls I have to put up with. Must go through between 50 and 100 mice a month. Honestly the pet shop are beginning to ask questions [emoji23]. I tend to get bulk orders on eBay or online refurb stores when they come available otherwise buying the cheapest I can find. Reminds me of a funny story I had a meeting where mice was one of the topics that came up and what I could do, if any to minimise the number of mice being broken... typical non tech management question. I will let your imaginations think of quip responses I could have come up with. sensible “actually addressing the problem” answers like locking rooms and asking staff to be more vigilant was obviously out of the question so As a hip fire shot I suggested half jokingly replacing the monitors and mice with touch screen monitors (I know a bold move but it was an out of the box thought). What threw me was their reaction as they asked how much would that cost... obviously with no figures to hand I told them I would price it up and we continued to discuss the pro and cons. Oddly What started as a Witty response turned into a potentially viable solution. I worked out 100 mice per month at £5 each = £6000 per year in mice replacements I have 6problematic ict rooms where the majority of the replacements go with 30 computers in each. That’s 180 monitors @ £120 each = £21600 No one in management was brave enough to make the bold move and put their job on the line I think. From a financial perspective The solution would begin saving in the 4th year. Oddly the more I got involved with this the more I saw this as a working solution if I had the financial backing. From a technical perspective as it has never been implemented before it would have been near impossible to say whether it would have worked long term.

My Personal opinion would be to create all group policies with the prefix "W10_" then create "Computers W10" OU with all the relevant computer applied GPO prefixed "W10_", using the original users OU, create all user applied GPO's with WMI filtering enabled for W10. You would need to create a wmi filter for windows 7 and alter all your win 7 gpo's also

I had a similar thought just last week and I too are of the opinion that it should be accounted for under GDPR. Its a bit of a issue really as under normal circumstances and by the school's policy all software, cloud based or other wise; Free or paid should have been approved by me before registration, however it has become apparent that even today i find 3rd party software/sites that they use where i have no knowledge of, as the teacher in question has taken it upon themselves to register themselves and their students on a website. Alot of emails have been circulated from various GDPR leading staff about this in particular even before GDPR and not many if any have returned declaring the use of a website where student data has been uploaded. Its an absolute nightmare

We use vericool. Generally no complaints other than their hardware is really expensive. I have set them up their own server and vlan. They use team-viewer and rdp to manage their servers and tills.

I would like to comment some advice about standards and not sure whether @synaesthesia agrees with me but my experience of the standards ap were pretty poor. Good for really low demand eg maybe in a home. Recommend pros over the standards. Standards use 24v Poe (non standard to most switches) so require a POe injector or compatible switch. Unlike the pros which support 48v poe offered by most Poe switches They also only support 10/100 as apposed to the pros which have gig uplinks. The pros also have a secondary port on them to attach another device eg a Poe camera. Not something I have implemented my self here but read it’s possible We had a small number of standards and I changed them all for pro ac

In my opinion it depends on your building structure. Parts of our main building is solid concrete therefore an ap has been designated in every room or if the rooms are clustered in away where demand may be greater. New builds however tend to be stud walls therefore you could probably get away with not putting one in every room. Our new build is three floors and the provisioning of ap works out like a star. Hope this makes sense eg... Ground floor room 1,3,5 First floor room 2,4 Second floor 1,3,5 Works well

Exactly my point I was referring too with the minor niggles. We have vlan d our byod network routed straight out of our smoothwall with a smoothwall portal doing authentication which they log in to everyday. Works well but the portal certificate can be a bit of a pain. For some reason I cant get it to work. Smoothwall don’t care and unifi & edugeek community have come up with ideas but nothing as a ideal permanent solution. Smoothwall ingenious solution was to allow a http portal rather than https. Not sure I am comfortable with that solution. We have learnt to live with the certificate error in browser.

This will solely depend on your number of devices connected and what you use it for. We have 82 pro / ac pro ap with ZHO across the site connected to gig switches servicing mainly BYOD and about 98 banked laptops and tablets All staff classrooms already have a wired computer in so not commonly used by the teachers throughout the day although the option is there. I too love unifi, and tbh can’t say we have had any major issues. And the minor issues outweigh the cost benefit difference. If you want a flawless service then opting for an enterprise solution may be the way forward but The way you use it in my opinion is the sole factor of choosing unifi over a very costly alternative.

I too have shrunk vhd in hyper v on countless occasions however compact through the gui sometimes doesn’t make a difference for reasons I am yet to understand. I found using diskpart to mount and compact vhd more reliable. Can’t see why it would be any different with vSphere however Please make sure you have a reliable backup. Maybe test on a non mission critical vhd. You won’t be able to do a snapshot as this creates another changes file (well it does in HV). I repeat ... DO NOT perform this if you have snapshots Shut server down Make sure all snapshots are merged with the vhd. Open cmd Diskpart Select vdisk file=“c:\path\to\vhd” Attach vdisk readonly Compact vdisk Detach vdisk Boot server back up

+1 on this. Always use bluescreen view to identify bsod If you can access the files on disk navigate to c:\windows\minidump and open one of the recent files using the software

What license agreement do you have ? Did you have problems with activation on your models?

Yeah iv done all that but when I come to turn on bitlocker it only offers the option of startup key I agree I would very much like not to use usb if I can help it The other two options are greyed out

the risk assessment is somewhat detailed or can be derived from my original post. Let recap what we know so far 1- The school bought the laptops so we are responsible and liable. 2- They were given to staff. It is highly likely that staff will use the laptops for work related material 3- it is likely that the work related material would contain sensitive information Therefore it is a valid GDPR query

The advent 4211c just remembered. The head of it bought them for like £150 each. Are they still classed as a bargain if they were sh!t [emoji57]

Lol did I mention how old they were. Something a know I didn’t mention however is they are Samsung and another (whose name escapes me right now) netbooks. Some only have 1gb ram in. 7 barely functions on them. On the other named netbooks windows 7 does not activate automatically. Something to do with the hardware and the volume license not being compatible if my memory serves me right. My boss at the time thought cheap cheap bought them from pc world and dumped 30 of them on my desk saying hand them out. Of course After putting a lite image on them all I notice none were activated and therefore had to call ms activation for each one. I was young and naive to think that things wouldn’t be that easy. This was the only method that worked. That was as I recall the Worst day of my life TBF I did try win 10 (on one this time) as I too thought why not try with very little confidence that they would function and I was right. The unnamed didn’t even install and the Samsung bsod with no drivers available to use. I wasn’t prepared to waste any more time and resorted to this post for alternative suggestions [emoji23][emoji848]
