Actually the same goes here for printers, are they managed through GPP? I had success with GPP printers, but some of the other parts of the preferences architecture just seem SO slow on Windows 7

Ah ok, so they are redirected to C: after a script copies down the shortcuts? Did you find an issue with start search having the start menu on C: coupled with the 'prevent access to C: drive' GPO?

Hi everyone, how do you guys go about managing the Windows 7 start menu? I have had a look at RES workspace manager, which is brilliant, but has one fatal flaw in that I can't seem to get it to work when a laptop is taken away from the network! RES itself works but it doesn't process the user group policy, not sure if I'm doing something wrong there, but as soon as I remove RES everything is back to normal and the user policy suddenly works again!!! I have seen a few scripts on here before but wondered how everyone got around the crazy amount of different software packages which are installed in different locations? Do you leave all shortcuts for all students? Remove shortcuts which aren't available? How do you handle shortcuts to applications which need to be managed by permissions? Help!

The audio recording works with USB mics VMware KB: Recording sound through analog input devices fail in VMware View with PCoIP But in terms of throughput you are just hammering your network! You could also use the RES VDI extender app, which looks brilliant, however its quite expensive. I have managed to get a bit of analogue recording through PCoIP with the unsupported driver that teradici make, but it wasn't as seemless as the thick clients. I think what I am trying to say here is it works well, but it is not faster, nor vastly cheaper than thick clients, especially with Microsofts licencing scheme meaning that you have to buy an OEM licence for Windows to allow the EES VDA licence to apply. This means you cannot use the traditional thin client units without paying a premium.

We trialed the PCoIP variant of remote access. Basically the IT rooms do the OCR courses so video and audio editing is essential, the other rooms are general IT rooms and audacity is used often on them so audio recording was a pretty essential thing for us. They do work, don't get me wrong, but they don't feel like an upgrade.

Its ok, but its really not as fast as a thick client! By fast I mean, take a large webpage, scroll up and down like a loony and there is noticable lag on the VDI station.

We found VDI in schools to be a bit far fetched, poor audio recording and performance generally in the OS (window scrolling etc) just isn't as good as a fat client. We are considering them for remote access which to be honest it is perfect for.

We run pretty much all I3's not had any issues with video things here, we run WLMM and Movie Plus with no issues. They aren't creating feature films, but I can't see that happening anyway!

If you are changing your logon background you could go the oobe route? Customize the Windows 7 Login/Logon Background | InterWorks, Inc.

We have them running off two which might he why we see it less often.

I haven't checked the event logs yet for folder redirection as its annoyingly intermittent! Are the shares on 2003 or 2008? Ours are 2003, no idea if there is a connection, we get some really weird behaviour with shares becoming unavailable for some users when they wake up from sleep. Again its so intermittent that diagnosing it is incredibly difficult (ruled out DNS and issues with the server, pretty much only left with strange incompatabilities with 2003)

We have the same, I believe that it may be timing out, although how to solve it... Not sure! I am looking into RES Workspace manager to replace some of this stuff and the Windows redirection just seems to be so slow compared to XP.

Lol I hadn't realised! We came across the same thing looking at thin clients however these had linux on them meaning you had to buy windows to use the SA vda licence which was pretty rubbish pretty good with OSx though!

All the EES licences are upgrades, meaning that you have to have a Windows OEM OS on the station no matter what, so your OSx stations would need an OEM Windows (home premium to be cheapest) then with the EES you could put enterprise w/ KMS support or whatever version you wanted.

Was this ever sorted? Just run into the same issue, can either relax the 'Prevent Access to Drives from My Computer' or map the start menu to a remote share. :/ I have tried manually indexing a c: drive location and mapping the start menu to that location but it comes up with the same issue. Seems to index System32 and other locations fine though :s

No probs here, the VM infrastructure should be totally transparent so shouldn't make any difference at all.

Definitely best not to go multicast with unmanaged switches! We run ours as a VM with 4GB ram and 2vcpus, it doesn't really require that much in hardware, ours has been running for a year and a half and we have 140GB of data on the drive (which includes sibelius 7 with all its 32 gb of sound files......) I am a big advocate of VM's so I would personally say get that server with 8GB ram and put ESXi on it, virtualise the server give it 4GB ram and you can add another server on to the same ESXi box for free (hardware wise anyway!)

Yeah I noticed that, I was looking for ages for a piece of the standard HUI which seems to be making appearances these days. Needs a home button or similar, or the back button should bring you back to the home rather than out of the app completely

We have water sprinklers in ours. We pointed it out when we first got into the new building. They informed us that the sprinklers are mechanical, ie they have a glass bead in them which has to melt to actually set them off. In other words if the sprinklers start, there is already no server room left!

Thats usually the switch configuration, they have to be capable of multicast, which would usually rule out any non managed switch. You must have IGMP enabled on all VLANS, on all switches, which host multicast traffic. You also have to set up an IGMP querier if you don't have a multicast capable router (if you do then you set up one of the PIM Modes). If its all set up you should see the same traffic if you image one PC as if you image 60 at a time. We usually do one room at a time (30 pcs) because after that many, you need a break from pressing F12 It should be able to handle way more though, and MS have done a great job of setting up the mutlicast joining support, where you can join a client half way through an existing session and it will not disturb the others or have to wait for a new session to start.

Try the multicast support if you want to reduce traffic, MDT supports it with the addition of WDS on the server.

Things to remember with IE is that only 9+ supports HTML 5 and that if your Moodle is hosted internally your IE might pick it up as an intranet site and apply compatibility mode to the site this will effectively disable all HTML 5 support. Check this in Tools/compatibility mode and un- tick show intranet sites in compatibility mode. Might sort out the issues you see :-)
