Well the EES agreement gives you the VDI licence as part of your standard Windows licence so as long as you have the OEM licence you have the VDI licence. If you buy a thin client with no OS or with Linux etc, then you have to buy a VDI licence anyway even though you have the EES agreement. MS class the VDI (VdA) licence as an upgrade (the same as all the EES licences) so since linux isn't a valid upgrade path you have to buy extra licences.

The EES agreement includes the VDI licence upgrade for stations which already have the OEM licences, so all workstations we buy have OEM licences.

Each one of those ITX boxes needs to have a Windows OEM licence though to get the EES VDA licence upgrade, so that's instantly another £50 per box. I am a little skeptical of the VDI cost saving figures as well. Electricity savings are so marginal now with the new 'green' PSUs which are in desktops. The VDI experience is not the same as a full fat desktop, I can guarantee that someone could tell which is which in a side by side comparison. When you are replacing hardware the worst thing you can do is replace it with a lesser alternative, which IMHO is what VDI delivers in a school. It is VERY popular in business because it opens up avenues like remote working really easily and for most corporate applications its great. But audio redirection, scrolling performance and video playback are not as good as a full fat desktop and since thats what a lot of the PCs are used for I just don't see the benefit.

You don't need to use the CSS the browsers each have their own take on the video tag, in fact on IE10 I think it looks like one of the best (I know... blasphemy) You could use Moodle Filters to find video files and automagically add the video tag to make them all web 2.0. The video tag is HTML5 so certainly not 1990s!

How Microsoft Office Is Licensed In A Terminal Services Environment

We found this when looking at VMware View with regard to Windows itself and the VDA licencing. Basically our staff have laptops owned by the school. So our EES allows a remote Windows connection to a virtual machine as an upgrade to our Windows licence. However if someone connects to the VM from a non windows or a Windows machine not owned by the school, be it a tablet, phone, their own Windows laptop, we have to buy a licence for the machine. Making it rather expensive!! These licences aren't floating either, they are assigned to a machine and can only be transferred every 3 months They do have a student remote access option in the EES agreement don't they though? I am sure I heard that when we were looking at it originally.

That totally depends on the software. Some may be licensed per machine (or remote connection) some may be per user. Think from a software development POV if an institution bought 1 copy of a piece of software for a terminal server rather than a site licence for each fat station does that seem right?

Some vendors are creating new schemes for virtual machines/TS as it could mean that you could install an application to one machine and have it accessed across the site. What I have seen some do is class any machine which accesses the application as requiring a licence (this would be a per seat/computer model). But it really is totally dependant on the software vendor as enjay says.

My engine management light is on on mine Has been for 2 weeks now, I'm assuming it means its managing the engine well? Apparently its the CAM sensor, obviously not sensing the CAM..(?) anymore. As I spent all my life so far on computers, cars unfortunately are beyond me. All I know is that if the car steams or overheats I usually stop, as keeping on going can be a lot worse for you in the long run (or not too short run depending on how far you drive with it overheating!) Check and mark levels before and after you head home tonight, and keep and eye on the temp gauge, check the oil for mayo and check oil level. Also if you make it home tonight take out an AA membership!

I use a combination of both, EXEs work pretty well if you are confident with looking through the Windows uninstall registry. They often leave similar signatures to MSI's so you can easily detect if they are correctly installed. I have used INNOsetup to create EXEs for deployment or for MSIs I have used Advanced Installer which will do simple packages really quickly and easily. Hope that helps

I am keeping my fingers crossed that one day applications such as SIMS will peel themselves away from big players like Microsoft and get involved in OpenSource solutions like OpenOffice/LibreOffice. I do like MS Office 2010, but I REALLY dislike this idea of my documents in the cloud. I like to be in control of where things are not fling them on to the internet. Also I live in Dorset/Somerset, the internet connection here isn't always the best, it would be incredibly frustrating if my documents suddenly became inaccessible! As for 4G? I only have the one lonely, very slow, G on my phone when I'm at home Yep agree W8 should have been Windows 7 plus optimizations, the EFI boot and general speed of 8 are annoyingly good. The interface, though, is similar to the kiddy toys I'm looking at in Mothercare at the moment.

We don't have the remote access part at the moment, I'm guessing you mean direct access here? We use offline files so the SM share will be available offline, looking at the possibility of using a script to strip out the unavailable programs though as I think it might be a bit mad with all the millions of programs on the network otherwise! Am struggling to find one of the scripts on here now though lol Forgot the say the offline laptops are becuase all teachers have laptops which they use at home, our current provision doesn't work at all offline so I have redirected a static start menu, but this is not ideal as it doesn't contain any of the departmental applications
