  1. working the same as sr1 here, no noticable issues (tho we were on the trial)
  2. the stuff you used to get on IDE was called ribbon cable i believe.
  3. no. only it tech and network manager know it here. if you do it yourself it'll stop them giving it to kids and you can control who has or doesn't have access. and on what devices (ie phones?).
  4. can you change from single mode cable to multimode and back again? we have LX convertor to yellow cable (9/125) then apparently over multimode fiber (unknown fiber) back to yellow cable (9/125) then another of the LX convertors. It works and has been flawlessly for 7 years now, my quesion is, is it right?
  5. yeah with windows 7 you can add and remove access to control pannel 'applets' useing GPO's. Very useful, and you can use it for Custom 'applets'.
  6. We have 14 cabinets around the school with 40ish edge switches. we have about 500 computers, and quite a few other network devices.
  7. congrats - hope all goes well. have a really great day
  8. how much have you spent so far on the bee's, hive and kit used with them?
  9. rite - i'm gunna just plug it in on the network - doing no work but just to get it back 'online'. will see what happens....
  10. i did power it up and it worked fine for 5 mins, but it did have things plugged in. to me this wasn't a good switch at the time - was wrong for the type of network/size, and now i should see it in another rack doing edge or distribution services not being our core switch. now we have a littel cisco switch doing it - 24 Gb ports no fiber. but funding doesn't allow the network to be looked after.
  11. yeah we really do need that. most of our switches holding the network together are 6+ years old.
  12. I don't really want to go into this - yes it would be an idea to get it serviced but not by me - last time we had this problem a simple off on solved it. it sits behind a ups so i would doubt a surge, thermal couple, could be but it's in a controled enviroment kept at 16deg, age yeah 6 years of abuse, bad power - other switches are fine so i dunno. thanks tho - i may look at the firmware upgrade. no idea - they were set up by someone else (external). i know tree spanning is on so in theroy no loops can be made, it disables the ports. if it were a failed cable wouldn't i also be seeing odd/bad behaviour on the other switches i've now plugged them into? thanks both for your input so far.
  13. on Monday i came in to find people screaming as they couldn't log on. had a look at a photocopier - saw it couldn't authenticate so went to look for servers.... all were on and working normally, so looked at switches. ahh found the problem. our old core switch (3com 4950) had all it's packet light's on, which it has done before. so i unplugged it and all the network/fibre's, waited about 10 seconds and pluged it back in, then the fibers one by one and then the copper network. it didn't lock up, great problem solved i think - goes to photocopier and i can now log in. within 5 mins it had done the same again. I've now plugged all the coppers into other switches and fibers in where i could, and all the network that is connected it running fine. what could have caused this to happen - it had been plugged in for about 6 months with no changes and no issues. The switch in question has done this before but a quick reboot has solved it previously.
  14. i'm using 7 on alot of my devices... wont be moving back. i persoanally find it easy to use, as does the gf, brother, sister, 50 yr old dad who only reads e-mails... use it at work, no problems there.... XP was easy to use but so is 7, and it comes with better features.
  15. Does anyone know how i can get ease of access to display in the control panel. I would like to allow / disallow access via a group policy.
  16. no gate and no security - i could walk freely out onto main road... as could any other student. no fences between classrooms and the outside world.
  17. lucky sod.
  18. Nothing wrong with a mac - they just don't work. our old RM tablet has ubuntu on it - very impressed with that. and it natively supported it.
  19. My old school didn't and still doesn't have a gate - it's an outstanding school by offsted...
  20. ]to QUOTE from All schools and colleges / Safeguarding / FAQs / About us / Ofsted home / Ofsted - Ofsted
  21. I've just rung the home office (IPS) to ask if it's legal (photocopying a passport) and the response i got was... they haven't herd of this, it isn't illegal for them (employer) to request it, you don't have to provide it, they DONT recommend it and the number should be enough. The guy on the phone also said thet he has done it before but he knew EXACTLY who had the copy and had it sent back to him to be destroyed.
  22. Our pat testing is done in house by the DT tech (a trained spark who used to work on high voltage powerlines) he does them every year or 4 years if in an office environment. He will also do anything we pass to him as one off's. for us as a department we dont do it, but we do visually check things all the time - subconciously. when you walk into a room and swap a screen over - you look at the cable if it had a nick in it you would possible assess it's use and remove it if you thought it was dangerous. same goes for if you were to walk into a room a smell a blown cap - you would investigate furthur. but pat testing - really that should be done by a trained professional and not the IT staff - there there to provide support not being a spark or pat tester.
  23. cpc.co.uk... next day del.
  24. it was on facebook even before this...
  25. Depends on it's use - our print server is 2* dual core xeon 2.8GHz, with 2GB of RAM. We have about 50 printers on it and pcounter. Spool folder sits on a 20GB partition and yes it has filled that previously. We are running win server 2003 sp2 tho, so it's a little less memory intensive than 2008R2.
