I'm having a bit of a problem with Staff laptops and Word 2010. We've just imaged all the laptops to Windows 7 and Office 2010 but can't get Word to play ball. Everything works fine while the user is logged on to the network but when off the network (i.e. when a user is at home) Word crashes citing problems with the Normal.dot. I think it is down to the staffs roaming profiles and where the Normal.dot file is stored. I think Word is looking for it on the servers where the profile is stored (in AppData) and when not connected it throws up an error. I've tried redirecting AppData to the local userprofile location but that hasn't worked. Does anyone have any ideas? I cant really give out the newly imaged laptops until this is fixed! Hi everyone I have just tried to add a new printer to our already setup Mac print server and come across a problem. The new printer seemed to go in fine but now I cannot open the Printers & Fax preferences pane in System Preferences. The printers pane in Server Admin hangs and I cannot get past the CUPS welcome page. I am therefore having a bit of a problem configuring and changing printer settings. Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix it? I don't mind loosing the old settings if it means re-doing CUPS (if thats possible) but I'd rather not have to re-install the whole server as I have enough on my plate with the new Windows 7/Server2008R2 installs this summer. Hi everyone I've been trying to sort out the new staff laptops with Windows 7 and Office 2010. So far most things have gone in OK but I've now hit a stumbling block. When a member of staff uses the laptop off the network (at home or somewhere in the school without network access) Word decides to play silly buggers. It refuses to open any thing via the File > Open menu giving an Insufficient Memory error and asks if you want to save the current doc in a recoverable format. Saying No crashes Word. If you try and open a file (say off a USB stick) Word gives and error about problems with the normal.dotm file and then crashes. I'm a bit stuck as to what the cause of this is and its now holding up distributing the new laptops to staff so would like it sorted soon. Has anyone got any ideas as to whats causing this or what I can do to sort it out? Cheers James

Hi everyone I have recently been tasked with getting a print server working with Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. We already have a Server 2003 print server which serves printers to our XP machines. I have been trying to deploy printers based on rooms via Group Policy Preferences, using the item-level targeting pointing at OUs of computer rooms. Now I can get group policy to deploy the printers from the old Server2003 to Win7 clients with no problems, but it will not deploy the new 2008r2 printer shares no matter what I do. I have been through and disabled the Point and Print Restrictions for both Users & Computers as well as allowing non admin users to install drivers with the print driver setup class. I have managed to install both 32 and 64bit drivers on the server and it works fine if I point the GPP at the old Server2003 shares but no the new Server 2008R2 shares. Anyone have any ideas or see anything I've missed? Cheers James

Hi We've got another problem with the CS3 suite! (surprise surprise). When a student tries to open Premiere it takes forever loading the plugins, occasionally just crashing out all together. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to solve it? Students are logging on via active directory, Photoshop etc works fine. Cheers James

Sounds like your macs have Force Local Directory ticked in Directory Utilities (Show Advanced Options in Directory Utilities). If you untick it it should default to the users home directory. James

Hi everyone We've been asked by the new Chinese teacher here if we can add the Chinese language to the language bar in XP. He's given us a single user walk-through on how to do it but it won't work for all computers and student logins. Does anyone know of a way of setting the language bar for mandatory profiles in GP so users can change it? We have installed the east Asian Language packs so that is there all ready to go. Well I'm now fully re-activated and up and running on Cerberus. Just got my pld geared up and had my first dunes party last night after doing lvls 1-15 in FoV. Excellent party and FoV makes lvling a breeze. We were doing 9-10k/hour on flies gobs and crabs. Anyone else on Cerberus here? I need to find a new LS as my old one seems to have broken. From what I remember you can mount the .dmg and drag the update.pkg out onto your ARD machine then send it out via remote desktop. Works for a lot of things but not all. Cheers James

Cheers for that guys, I think I may give it another whirl this weekend. I do remember them bringing in FoV just before I quit, got my thf lvl'd to about 20 with that. Will take some of the pain out of low lvl grinding! From what I've heard there's going to be a few changes soon, world merges (Hades is being merged into Cerberus) and level cap going up to 99! Hi guys I've recently been thinking about coming back to FFXI after leaving 2 years ago. I've had a look and my character is still active but I was wondering what you guys thought of the current situation in game? Is it worth coming back? I have mnk at 75 and a couple more jobs 40/50 plus. Is there much chance of getting lower level parties? I thought I might try to do pld. Whats end-game like now? I never got into any dynamis-type stuff before I left. Cheers James.

Unfortunately you have to make 2 images, one for mac and one for windows. Image the Mac partition and boot into Mac and use to boot camp tool to make the Windows partition. You'll then have an NTFS partition that you can image with you Windows image. I'm yet to have found a reliable way of making a single image with both images one it. If anyone else know how this can be achieved I'd love to hear. Save me no end of time! James

I've just had to do this over the half term. I used DeployStudio to make and deploy my images: DeployStudio Fairly straight forward: Install on the server Make a share point to hold your images Make an image to Netboot to Build your image machine including Boot Camp partition Netboot it and image the mac then the windows side. Netboot all your other machines and image with Mac patition Use Boot Camp to make Windows partition Netboot and image Windows partition. Its a lot of steps but it beats walking between each machine with a firewire cable and carbon copying them and can be done using ARD for most of it. Once you have the image store and server set up it should work for all macs (until they bring out a new chip or something). This site has some good guides: DeployStudio Wiki As far as a boot menu goes rEFit was something I was going to implement but ran out of time, for now the kids can just reboot and hold Alt to get into Windows. I get the same thing using Firefox (ad over the right hand half of the 1st post). I don't mind ads on here usually but these are a bit intrusive (opening up if you go anywhere near them with the mouse!). Plus we don't get Virgin Cable down here in sunny Cornwall (grumblegrumblebtgrumblegrumble). James

Thats about what I was expecting. As usual the school want a cheap 5 minute fix but its not going to happen with this one. Found the correct screen on TheBookYard.co.uk but its £300 and not in stock so i think I'll strip it for parts for when the other 29 go ca-put. Cheers James

We're on about 90,000 prints since July last year (when we installed PaperCutNG). That also includes admin but not the photocopiers in repro. James

Morning all I've just been given a mac from the Art Dept. and the screen on it appears to have gone. It has 2 large black and white lines going from top to bottom over the whole screen. They are the older ones which are out of apple care so no support from that area. Anyone have any ideas on fixes or replacements? Its a 17" older white IMac from around 4 yrs ago. Cheers James
