That was THE face-palm moment for me......and these people are teaching our next generation.

Staff and students here have remote access via SGD, but for some reason, we don't publicise it. I've tried writing articles for the new-starters' handbook but they've never been included. Eventually, I gave up. I sometimes feel that even Armageddon (NOT the movie) will be cancelled here due to lack of interest.

None of you live in range of me, so I'll tell you my WiFi SSID......it's Rancho Mucho. I don't broadcast it though. Home server's called Rancho.Mucho.local but I haven't had it powered up for months, don't really see the need for it anymore. Like me, it's getting on and should be retired, gracefully, sometime in the (hopefully, very) near future.

We use YearofEntrySurnameFirstInitial for students, and SurnameFirstInitial for staff. In case of clash we use the first two letters of the given name, so Jane Smith is SmithJ, Julian Smith is SmithJU etc.

Absolutely, completely agree with you. Unfortunately, I think it's going to take an evolutionary step forward to a higher form of human being. Homo Superior or something of that name. While following it avidly, I'm staying largely out of this discussion. Religious extremity disturbs me deeply, as do the the people who indulge in it. In fact, religious belief disturbs me, it doesn't have to be very extreme at all.

if you're talking about the Education System as a whole, from year 1 to year 11, then let me put you out of your uncertainty. It's not. I don't know what the answer is. All I know is that I had a 1960's grammar school education, and in all aspects, today's education isn't a patch on what I had. Along with the academic subjects, I was taught self-discipline, self-control, self-restraint, respect for my teachers and for my school. I think, above all, I was made conscious of how lucky I was (even in the 60's) to have a free education, and to my mind that is where we have gone most wrong over the years. We've lost sight, in this country, of the value of a free education and that value MUST be re-instated, somehow. But hey, what do I know? I'm not a teacher, I'm not an educational psychologist.......I'm just an ordinary joe who sees kids leaving school at 16, unable to read, unable to write, unable to spell and believing that 'educ8', 'lol', 'rotfl' and the like are valid words that can be used and accepted in everyday correspondences. My main worry is where on earth are these kids going to find paid work enough to pay the taxes to pay my old-age pension?

I am waaaay past revving anything up to 9500 or even 9000. I want to drive round in a car I like the look of, a car that I can drive with the top down and a car that I've not had before. I've had a 'Hot Hatch', a ****-off big limousine, a coupe and a few 'family' saloons. Never had a two-seater, roadster or sports-car (whatever you wanna call them). Ideally, I'd like a single-seater, then I can't give anyone a lift, I can't ferry the grandkids about and it's pointless of people to ask me to run errands for them.

Nope, don't do it for me like a Z3 does. Not even a Z4 does it for me like a Z3 does.

What's an S2000?

I'm seriously thinking of buying a Z3 in the next couple of months. Anyone had one or got any horror stories or recommendations? Although I've just seen a couple XJS's on Autotrader that quite took my eye.

@dsk We started off with Haans-G 19", running 1440x900, but the last couple of rooms we've re-furbished have been Dells, with accompanying 22" widescreens. Not sure what res they're running on, I suspect the same 1440x900. I could go and check for you, but it's Results Day and I'm keeping the lowest of low profiles.

Whenever we replace the pc's here, we're always asked, on the quiet, if we can 'leave one in my pigeon-hole'. I think by that they mean, 'Can I have one of the old pc's you're replacing, please?'. It's always the same three or four teachers who ask and the reply is always the same.........'No, you can't'. It baffles me as to why they think that as soon as the pc's are replaced, because they're not fit for purpose anymore, that they're fit for purpose for home use. We've just installed a room full of i5's last Easter, and they're the *only* pc's we have here that I'd give house-room to. And before anyone asks.....'No, you can't have one when we replace them'.

Had widescreens here since 2006, when we installed the first of our present IT rooms. All our laptops are widescreen. We've got some Sunray 270's and 2's that aren't widescreen. I've been pushing to have them replaced with 3's and 3i's, however, I am but a lone voice in this wilderness of early 21st Century computing...XP workstations, 2003 servers, XP laptops etc., and I'm fast losing the will to work it all.
