  1. Pre planned routes to get cabling into the server room Wide - most of the server rooms I've dealt with are narrow, and its a PITA to get to the back of cabs
  2. Rooted and flashed a while ago, but not done a GEN2 upgrade, might do that thanks. I agree it is a good phone, half of me wants to just keep it as a spare since it worked so well.
  3. I've got a Orange San Francisco (Android phone) unlocked to all networks if that's any good? Back is a bit tatty but the screen is in good condition, it's boxed, spare battery, and it's still a fairly decent phone...would be after about £45. Or if you're after even cheaper, I have a Sony Ericsson W995 locked to 3 for £30
  4. Tried about 5 different drivers from the catalog, just wasn't recognised - looking at the files it looks like they were for totally different printers? About to give up when I decided to download the Vista driver (which everywhere I looked people said didn't work so I didn't initially download it) and it worked straight away! Well, it took about 10 seconds to print a page, but it works Very odd
  5. The school are investing in a pool of cameras (around 5) as currently they only have one and this means staff are starting to use their iphones to photograph kids, not a good idea so that has been nipped in the bud. A teacher has asked whether there is anything similar to a laptop cabinet for cameras/small devices? There does seem to be, but all along the idea of a compartment for each device - not sure we need or have the space for that, was just thinking of a single door lockable cabinet with the camera chargers mounted in there and something (perhaps cut foam) for the cameras to sit in, and preferably a shelf. Happy to do all that myself, but struggling to find a metal cabinet that isnt just a school locker! Any ideas?
  6. Must have a misinformed account manager then, as he was adamant they would only provide OCZ. Tbh I think they were originally going to charge £30 extra even for those, if that had stood I would have just bought Intels separately and swapped them out myself (in fact I kind of wish I had!)
  7. I wish I had room for an aisle of any description! Then again I only have one cab worth of equipment Usually keep mine at between 19-21 degrees
  8. Agree that Viglen do a reasonable deal with SSDs, however they are almost insistant on using OCZ drives. I had to go with them in the end, as time was running out and we needed Omnino 4's and they just wouldn't budge on the SSD brand. Out of the box 1 of the 25 we ordered seems to be having problems already So fight with them to get a better brand if possible. Also bought some Zoostorms with Intel SSDs from CP Ltd and they have been amazing so far
  9. @Cache what is the method for using the update catalog? I searched and found an apparent driver for the 1010 for Windows 7/8 but it didnt seem to work. Do I need to visit the catalog on the computer with the printer attached?
  10. Thanks Cache, I'll give that a try Yeah will slowly try to get rid, they are crap, though to be fair they've lasted 9 years which is about 6 more than most of HP's newer kit...
  11. Upgraded to Windows 7 (32 bit) over the summer, quite a few classrooms have Laserjet 1010's, no official driver so found a workaround that involves using a 3050 PCL5 driver, tested and works. Except it only does briefly - after a dozen or so pages the printer starts spitting out: PCL: Unsupported Personality. Switching the printer on and off resolves it but only for a while again. Something to do with the 1010 not implementing PCL properly so every page printed sends some excess garbage until the buffers get full up. So staff are not happy about this We have so many of the bl00dy things I can't see the bursar agreeing to replace them all, so is there any other workaround? I've looked high and low online....a few people have managed to bodge it with the XP driver but I couldnt get it to work for me. Is there any other solution? I'm sure at my old school we had lots of them and they worked fine after upgrading to 7!
  12. Looks ugly though!
  13. Ha, there's not a chance in hell any of them are going to remove that OS!
  14. 2003R2 VM that used to run our old MIS and was using as a print server for Xp clients. Printers are being moved over to a 2008R2 VM, after that everything will be 2008R2
  15. Mostly CPLtd, Millgate sometimes, and BT Business for smaller stuff (hard disks, keyboards etc) Won't use Misco out of principle since the account manager assigned to us (despite not ever buying anything) is extremely annoying I also prefer smaller companies, they just seem more efficiant to deal with, even if I could possibly save a small amount buying elsewhere.
  16. Are you sure it isn't anything to do with the keyboard settings in Windows (or whichever OS you're using)? Does a USB directly attached to the server work ok? I ask because the key for \ is in a totally different place on US keyboards. I've got a US spec macbook and I have to keep changing the keyboard layout when I connect to my work PC
  17. Er, no it isn't. Why would you install Android and then XBMC when you could use RaspBMC which is specifically designed to run XBMC on the Pi? If you just wanted it for a HTPC that is
  18. That is the issue, time. My boss really wants something in place ASAP. Currently we have 3 sites and everyone is getting fed up of not being able to easily transfer calls and having to dial out externally to call between sites. I would love to be able to do it myself, but I don't want to rush it and I feel like I would be. Also although I'm sure I would be fine with setting it all up internally, connecting it to our existing ISDN30 scares me, if I'm honest! I wouldn't have a clue Edit: I have already had a play with FreePBX and whatever I go with, I'll probably still learn it all as it's a good skill to have. I'm just not sure my boss has the patience!
  19. We've got quotes for a replacement of our ageing phone system (this is from a supplier the school has used for many years and wants to keep using, so that part is out of my hands, plus I don't have enough experience to setup a system myself) The lowest quote is for a hybrid solution which would provide IP phones for the admin staff, and for the remote sites connected via leased line (which is the main reason for looking at VOIP) yet keep the existing digital phones for most of the school, and the highest is for a pure IP system with every handset replaced with IP ones. There is obviously quote a few thousand £ difference in these quotes, but my boss has said she will go with whichever I think would be suitable. I've mulled it over for weeks now and still can't decide - on one hand I'm thinking go for the cheaper end, as do classroom phones really need to be changed when they are only used to contact reception/other teachers internally, but on the other hand I'm thinking that if we're going to do it, we should go for the lot - not to mention the pure IP solution has a 1U rackmount controller, and the hybrid uses a modular system which could turn out being pretty big, also existing phone cabling terminates in the wrong place so would need to be moved anyway. But then with the full solution, there is a lot of work running extra network points to each room. What would you do? The quotes are for a Toshiba system, the hybrid one is a Strata CIX 670 and the full IP one is a Toshiba IP Edge
  20. I've recently replaced our old server cabinet, and wondered if anyone wanted it? There isn't really anything wrong with it, it was just not strong enough for all the equipment we had, and I preferred to get an open rack instead. It's a dark grey colour, 42U, has both sides, back and glass front door. I haven't had the door on for a long time so whether it still attaches I can't guarantee, but it should be fine. Comes with transport castors and one shelf, and all the fixings It's all currently in pieces and would need to be collected from Richmond, Surrey - would obviously need a van or a long estate car due to the length! Can take some pictures if required but as it is in pieces it isn't very exciting.
  21. You have VERY good taste my favourite rum
  22. Looks like I'm the only one, but I quote enjoy unpacking! I've been off for a while so I know I've got lots of goodies waiting for me when I get back The bit I don't like is shifting them about - especially when there never appears to be a sack truck available
  23. Got the older version at home as a file server and VM host, and was so impressed I bought the newer version at work to act as a DC/File server for a site 5-10 users, and it's fine with it. No powerhouse but it's more than up to most tasks.
  24. I drove 30 miles each way for almost a year (this was crawling along the M25 and M4 each morning so took 90 minutes) and it really took it out of me. It was worth it for the job but I wouldn't rush to do it again Now got a half hour commute on the train which suits me a lot better
