I rescind my previous comments. To quote my daughter after dropping her guts for the 5th time in the space of 2 minutes "it's naaaaaaasty!" Had to revert back to a backup of the old controller after a new UP AC Mesh refused to mesh! Also a pain when you've of course upgraded the firmware on the affected AP's to match! They've tried to change so much and add bits in alpha/beta that it just confuses things massively. Beforehand you'd just set up a trunk by using the "All" network profile, but now they're tryin to shoehorn in tagging & untagging as well it just doesn't work.

Laughable - this is so well documented, I'd just point them to all of that. I assume they're likely angling for home education.

Quite the opposite, all still at silly prices and the mid range cards aren't exactly enticing, performance per pound wise.

Re those wanting it for chromebooks - looking at this ourselves via remoteapp. Should be easy enough to do and light enough that doing it on mass wont stress any server.

To be fair that's just what those platforms (Gsuite, 365) are for. Teams is just a fancyish front for Sharepoint. If you have a platform set up already on either Google or 365, just use whichever you currently have. If you don't, look up the government grants to get you set up on whichever you choose. Do not make the mistake of using multiple.

Yes indeed - MS are fully pulling all to do with silverlight from October 21 but until then it's still in IE11, which they're also trying to kill off.

Not a scooby doo where best to post this so will try my luck here. The exclusion system here (may be everywhere, I don't know) goes through Capita One - our data/SIMS manager logs onto a website to log all exclusions, temp & permanent. This is a **** Silverlight page. It's 2020, we've just rebuilt our system with a lovely new version of Windows and had zero intention of making IE 11 available. Has anyone else hit this, or do I have to bend over to let insecure crap rule supreme as usual?

Exactly this - the device tunnel enables pre-logon authentication - once the user is logged in, the user VPN kicks in and authenticates the user against the network. Plus this fixes little niggles like red crosses on drives in my computer.

Dunno, give it a month when the 3000 series cards are about and even the basic midranges like the 1660, which are hovering around £200 will give you parity on performance short of a feature noone seems to be able to tell the difference on

No need for that rudeness - my understanding is FAR beyond what you seem to think, and my experience and expertise proves I know *exactly* how it works, how it *should* work etc. I know full well it's not about the devices, and I made it clear it should all be device agnostic. You appear to have head in the cloud a little here (sorry, pun was intended!) and assuming that just because that's what they've learned that's exactly how it'll work for them in the Big Wide World. They DO need basic keyboard skills. They DO need to be able to choose the right tool for the right job - but when 6 times out of 10 the right tool isn't a touchscreen device and you're watching a kid with a PhD tap away frustratingly at a non-touchscreen device, are you really going to stand by that comment? "Here, you're now equipped to fix any car, not just that Ford. All the tools you need are right here - a set of allen keys and a fudge cake." We're all here for the same reason, the betterment of our next generations and IT is a small but increasing part of that.

Ah, but there is the contradiction. You're absolutely right these skills should be transferable and platform agnostic, but so many of them just can not be done on an iPad which is where I really dislike these particular schemes when not properly backed up with alternative provisions such as a suite or set of laptops for example. Typing and general keyboard skills. Proper editing of media & files. Programming is a ballache on tablets but I don't see that as a particularly useful skill for GCSE level (but see the huge benefits in learning the logic behind it). I worry that we fall into the same trap as the University Elites - places where people end up spending 5 years of their life to theoretically learn something then end up in the real world and have no idea how to actually do it (and then companies who won't even read your CV if you've not been) It all needs proper thought and due process.

But why do you think SIMS has that sort of effect? Is it not possible that schools with some modicum of forethought believe that their pupils might benefit from learning to use something they will use in the future for SO many jobs? Or are they writing all their kids off as likely to work with nothing but tablets when taking orders from customers at MaccyDs or Starducks?

I hope it's more to do with common sense. As long as schools still have availability for proper devices and teach the basics on them then 1:1 on ipads is fine. Otherwise, the schools might as well teach them Latin for all the good it'll do.

True to a point - rare to see any real parity between consumer and business grade machines. Precision vs Latitude, Thinkpad L series vs just about anything else off the shelf - although HP are reasonably similar. We decided against the HP 440's here for instance in favour of Lenovo but they do indeed look similar to consumer grade kit. Rule of thumb - if it hasn't got screws on the bottom, it's no good.

How much work do you seem to think is involved in setting up a NAS and having some backup stuff on it? Probably a one-off half a day job. So no, no infrastructure addition, no major changes, just an answer to a "what if". I can certainly say you HAVE had downtime in the last 10 years, as has the entire country. Point is, no matter how good you think your system is, when a little backup plan costs £negligable, why not?

One thing I would add to any serverless setup is some sort of backup on top of redundancy. I know it goes against serverless, but WHEN (this is when and not if) something happens to your one or even two connections that is out of your control; perhaps routing dies because something happens at Telehouse, level 3 or any of the backbones and your backup line suddenly becomes quite useless. Are you going back to pen and paper for the duration? Noone seems to want to admit this is not only a possibility but a likelihood, and it would take SO little to just have something in place locally so you're not breaking out the mini chalkboards. You've already got the stuff internally dealing with DHCP and DNS with the router/firewall typically so a single fileserver (might not even need to be much more than a decent NAS) with disaster recovery/backup plans in place might help. I might be old fashioned, but for so little effort why not?

Without monitor, that budget should be enough for a ryzen 3600, B450 mainboard (dont recommend the B550) & 16g RAM with SSD and Im sure you can find a hard drive for general storage, 650w PSU and case and indeed a 1650 graphics card. If you hold on a couple of weeks then with the release of the 3000 series graphics cards which are bringing high end prices right down, it should drop the prices of the 1000 series too.
