Hi, Just had a couple of students come up with an issue (with teachers) trying to partake in assessments on Testwise website. They're on Chromebooks... and the site is demanding they press PgDn a few times for some reason. Obviously without such a button, they can't continue. Has anyone else come across this?

Using Trilby here, it's rather good. Just don't bother with it on Apple TV's (well, don't bother with Apple TV's period )

One thing I've fallen foul of recently is the odd way smoothwall handles vlans - so if you have a default vlan of 1 and other vlans added via a trunk port other than whichever is dealing vlan 1, you need to add vlan 1 with IP to the trunk port too.

Got rid of my Ring in favour of Eufy earlier in the year, not looked back. Just had to buy a micro SD for local storage, works just as well if not slightly better than the Ring did and no ongoing costs - but if you want fully cloud then the subscriptions are vastly cheaper.

These are the same as the "VapeGuardian" ones - off the shelf, £15 detectors using consumer grade home automation software to manage the hoardes of false positives. I strongly recommend avoiding using them.

Verkada or Halo by a long way - the latter seems to be best value for money, the former more feature rich. don't get suckered into the cheap and cheerfuls.

Cheers! Just briefly, this may be something anyone can answer. Currently we have an internal interface which is the gateway for pretty much everything, but we also have a trunk interface with all the VLANS on (this is what I'll be bonding). That also includes the very vlan the internal is on, which seems a little counter-intuitive to me. Are both necessarily needed? Currently they both have a different IP address on the same range in that subnet.

Morning all, I'm basically rebuilding our SW from scratch this evening thanks to an overcomplicated and botched install by our previous MSP. One thing I want to do is just set up a quick bonded interface for resilience, for now it will be going into the same switch but at Easter it'll be separate switches. The documentation from SW only mentions about the SW interfaces, so does anyone know off hand if you need to configure the switches for LACP or similar, or will it just work?

This is actually a good point - I keep forgetting the certificate for the connection is embedded in the ovpn file imported. That may well suffice!

And 20 years ago, Macs were relevant in said industry. As soon as they went Intel, any benefit was lost, then when they went to M1/M2 silicone, the benefit isn't worth £2k per machine at least in education. I don't think this particular user is here to do anything than to stir up and sincerely hope hasn't been given a job in schools IT.

It's 2024, surely you're already using 365 or Google and therefore your bases are covered with correct use. It is likely better to concentrate efforts on using what you already have.

Photoshop is very common, macs not so much (because they're just not fit for purpose nor can the "industry standard" rubbish be thrown around any more). Plus there's a lot of other capable image editing apps in use in edu including some online ones.

Are there any plans for Smoothwall to implement MFA on their VPN solutions? In 2024, that might be a big tick to cover what's easily it's weakest point. The documentation says "at the time of writing.... doesn't support 2FA" which gives a slight glimmer of hope!

As above, you can do this in Google itself. GDPR has no bearing on the management of devices "outside of hours", unless perhaps your policies are particularly lax and students/parents are unaware of the controls in place on the devices.

Yeah, all the same and logs just say the latest version has been downloaded and applied. I haven't gone digging in too far though. It's no major issue, just one of those little things that I might not have otherwise noticed. Thanks though
