The newly built Essa Academy At the beginning of December I had accepted an invite to visit the newly built Essa Academy in Bolton as a guest of both the academy and Meru Networks and so it was a week later I found myself taking a short trip down the M61 to visit them. The academy is a BSF build and has only been open for 6 weeks at this point, but it was clear a lot of work had already gone into ensuring everything was ready for the off. Dennis Ritchie Dies Aged 70
Dennis Ritchie, the creator of the C programming language and co-founder of the Unix operating system, has died at the age of 70. Mr Ritchie was arguably one of the most influential figures in the early days of computing and laid the foundations for many of today's technologies before they were even conceived. Steve Jobs Dies Aged 56
Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of the highly succesful technology firm Apple, has died aged 56. News broke in the early hours of the morning with a statement on Apple's website describing him as "a visionary and creative genius." The cause of death is believed to be the end of a long running battle with cancer. A thread regarding Mr Jobs' passing is available here.

Edugeek hits the 40,000 members mark
Well it's happened slightly quicker than we thought it would, and today we have hit the 40,000 members mark, a mere 10 months after seeing 30,000 last December. Google just bought Motorola Mobility
It appears Google just bought the mobile arm of Motorola for $12.5 billion! Yahoo is reporting that the agreement is paying a premium of 63% per share over the price they were trading at on Friday.Google are planning to run it as a separate business but one has to wonder what the next wave of Motorola handsets will be like when they are released. This could also mean big changes for the tablets Motorola have been producing and certainly seems to explain why no Motorola Windows Phone 7 handsets
