ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 http://www.ict-direct.co.uk/media/edugeek/upgradathon.jpg In recent times there have been a number of threads on this esteemed site where good users have compared their office workstations. Some of you are lucky devils indeed and boast powerful hardware to run your day to day admin tasks. Others are veritable paupers, suffering from old processors, limited memory and, astoundingly, no Solid State Drive! To this end. We at ICT Direct have decided to host a winter competition. We’ll be offering lucky winners upgrades to their current hardware which should, in theory, give you a little more respectability in the personal office tech stakes. There will be a grand prize to be won in week six in addition. A lovely HP Z420 workstation for one lucky winner to show off all their technical prowess on. See the picture below for full specs. http://www.ict-direct.co.uk/media/edugeek/Z420.jpg In the finest traditions of EduGeek competitions past, we’ll be asking for your professional contact details (Via PM or email) in exchange for entry. We’ll also be asking you to post your current specs in the thread for all to see, along with some reasons as to why YOU deserve to be a winner. You can argue on a personal level, or you can seek sympathy because your machine is just THAT bad! Crucially, you must make it funny! The more amusing, entertaining, or downright silly your attempts, the more likely it will be that we assign you a coveted bonus entry into the grand draw! So prepare your wit, design your memes, write that short story, compose the theme song & record the music video that this competition NEEDS and get your entries in pronto! LeMarchand Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 I shall be on this tomorrow! Typing this on an Acer Iconia W510 with a 32 bit Atom dual core Z2760/1.8Ghz processor and 2GB of RAM. This is my newest machine (work at 3 schools), and the only one with an SSD so everyone should take pity on me! 1
CAM Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 My home PC is full of spiders, does that count? 1
Joanne Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 My machine is an ICT Direct special, but I've had it for a few years now and perhaps it's time for me to get a new one, because you love me and I am great. Also when I bought it I didn't know that I would be running Adobe Creative Cloud and we all know how much RAM that beautiful thing uses.... especially After Effects!! Intel Xeon X5675, 24GB RAM, 240GB SSD and 1TB HDD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 750. Plus having a HP machine will blend me in with the rest of the admin crew here. YEAH BOI! 2

If you work for more than one school, you can enter for each. My home PC is full of spiders, does that count? You can use whatever sob story you think will work. But remember, we're only upgrading your work machine My machine is an ICT Direct special, but I've had it for a few years now and perhaps it's time for me to get a new one, because you love me and I am great. If you win one of the weekly upgrade deals I'm sure we can find an old HP chassis you can decant the bits into 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 5, 2018 Author Posted November 5, 2018 Just a quick reminder. Even if we already have your details. To enter the competition, you still need to PM me them again. Entries are going on a new spreadsheet and I'd rather not have to hunt through mailing lists and customer files to find all your details!
DalekSec Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 (edited) I'm running a Surface Pro 4 (oooerrr posh *** i hear you say!) NAY I SAY!!! It has a m3 CPU running at... 0.9Ghz (2Ghz Boost) on all of its 2 cores! Meaning i'm above 90% CPU load at all times. A mighty 4GB of RAM! Meaning one tab on Chrome and it maxes out (My page file is currently at 9GB) and when i need to do photoshop work i can't edit more than one photo at a time. As for videos.... i use my personal MacBook Also a MASSIVE 128GB drive, meaning i can just about store everything i need with 5GB to spare, whats that you need to download an ISO? MAWAHWHAHWAHHAW no..... uninstall software, download, reinstall software. But i hear you say, it's got a fancy dancy looking screen, aye it does... but it's resolution is 2736 x 1824 WHO MAKES A WEIRD RESOLUTION LIKE THAT! I have so many scaling problems i'm practically a lizard. Telegram messenger is either so small Sherlocks magnifying glass can't see it or so large Ray Charles can see it! And to top it all off... when i undock it, the CPU goes to 100%, the RAM goes to 100% and off loads to the m.2 so thats on a 100%, it freezes and sorts itself out and scales after about 5 minutes. 1/3 of the time when docked it doesn't scale to my other screens and requires a hard restart. I would take an atom CPU, YES AN ATOM!!! in a laptop with a 720p screen and 8gb of RAM (maybe even a conventional HDD as long as its at least 200gb) over this never ending nightmare. Edit: I have got one saving grace, i brought my old gaming mouse in from home to help with RSI so i have a bit of RGB also Edited November 5, 2018 by DalekSec 2

HereIGoAgain2601 Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Currently working with a bog standard HP ProDesk 400, not a bad machine for what it is really. 7th gen i5 with 8gb RAM and 256gb SSD. Fine for everyday use but need something with more power for my test VMs! 1
DalekSec Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 I think anyone with at least an i5,8gb RAM and flash storage over 200GB should be excluded from this xD Unless it's first gen i5, ddr2 and on an SD card 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 6, 2018 Author Posted November 6, 2018 Everyone’s need is relative. Plus. This thread would be a lot more boring if I banned half of the potential entrants from the outset. Get convincing me that you deserve an extra entry ;-) 2
UnknownStuntman Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Working on a Viglen PC, 6th gen Intel i7, 16Gb Ram, 120Gb SSD, 2TB HDD. It does triple monitor setup with the on board graphics just fine. Mainly just want new machine to sell to fund a new chair or welding station to fix my chair. Already a hand me down from the head to replace my previously broken chair. 1
mikeprice Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 (edited) I am typing this on my trusty old laptop - Intel Pentium P6100 2GHZ with 3 GB memory But then I am sort of retired so it isn't a work machine anyone fancy starting a crowd funding thingy to buy me a new one??? additional note - it works fine since I installed an ad blocker - recently used it for creating 3D print files, editing photos using GIMP - and other stuff - but it is a bit slow edit: - just checked the Bios - and it will be 8 years old in a few weeks Edited November 6, 2018 by mikeprice 1

I kept a nice old chair in service for years after the faux leather cover gave out! Does anyone else see a beak-like mouth when looking at that chair btw? No? Just me then...
