Hi, my names Jon and I've been a user of Windows Phone since Nov 2011, when I got my first smartphone, a HTC Titan running WP7.5...

Ok, enough of sounding like an AA meeting, here's what you all want to know:

Window Phone - Force Update

[back-covering]Please note: I have no affiliation with the above site, or Microsoft, so please do this at your own risk, I am not responsible for the content of the site, or your actions. [/back-covering]

The site does talk about updating from 7.0 to 7.5, but the method still works. It does take a little practise to get the timing right, but it does work, so stick with it!! Since the upgrade I have noticed no issues, but I have only be upgraded since last Wednesday night. YMMV.

Some key points that help:

1) Put phone in flight mode.

2) easier using either ethernet cable, or laptop with a switch for the wifi.

3) Approximately 2-4 seconds seems to be the sweet spot.

Love the update, taken too long to get out IMHO, but will now tide me over until my upgrade this Nov. So better later than never :D

Anyway, I hope this helps all you windows phone users still on 7.5.

Just run through the upgrade on an LG Optimus 7Q, massive hassle as you have to do it three times to get to 7.8 but it works fine. Glad to finally have the update. Still no way to manually set the MMS APN like in 8 after the lousy LG app broke my MMS but the new start screen is good, the phone even seems a little quicker although it did eat another 750MB of available space. Still if I ever bother to log into my dev account I'm sure I can easily fix the MMS for the twice a year I actually use it :)

Thanks to the op for pointing out it was avalible or I probably would have languished on 7.5 for another month before even hearing about it as telecom providers here are the slackest they can be without the government kicking them out.

Edit: @john may be interested in this for his pro 7

I hooked it up, setting > update in zune, let it get to the bit that said it was up to date

Clicked name phone, clicked update then left it for about 2.5 seconds then pulled the Ethernet cable. This seemed to work if timed right, it would then say an update was avalible at which point you plug the internet back in and let it update. The big thing was to have flight mode on otherwise it will fall back to WiFi or cell and say your up to date.

If all else fails you could try this :

http://windowsphonehacker.com/articles/want_windows_phone_7.8_now_try_this_easy_tool-01-31-13

Which only installs the cabs and no new firmware but should work even if your manufacturer is being a tool. HTC seemed to be quite onto it though in comparison to the three forced updates I had to do for LG, the Mozart is apparently 7.8 as is the trophy so yours should be on the list.

I used the zune method

Have a got a Lumia 800 and recently upgraded to the 820.

Luckily the update was available normally for my Lumia 800 so didn't have to do the force update trick, I remember having to do it for 7.5 though.

Yep I have an 8 phone!!!

Lumia 920 :)

How did one know? Tracking code like Google?

Did have a Titan before which before I did get a custom beta version of 7.8 running.

Had to, update my mums Lumia 800 in the weekend, it took 5 updates to get it 7.8! That's a heck lot of updates, she has never message about updating, so I doubt she had any updates missed.

I saw your post in the eduapp thread requesting a WP version, a wish that I share, you can use board express for tapatalk which is similar though.

Just did an HTC Mozart, another three update marathon but runs really well. Forcing it seemed trickier as the time window seemed smaller, I had to cancel out a few times then come back in, run a check, get told it was not there then do the recheck, cable pull etc.

Proved again that not putting it in flight mode stops it.

HTC Trophy (WP 7.5)

Samsung ATIV S (WP 8)

The Trophy has pretty much been relegated to "Playing Games on the Train" territory, as my WP7 games didn't port across to my WP8 (And I don't want to pay for FF again!)

Apparently no-one is planning on a keyboard unit like the 7 Pro :'( HTC said they had no current plans to develop a WP8 one of the 7 due to poor sales when I asked them :( Unless they are just saying that to keep it a surprise but given keyboards were all the rage a few years ago they do seem to be much more sparse now

Will keep attacking and hope I get it as mines a HTC OEM handset

and after a few hrs of attacking and 3 updates later I have WP7.8 on my handset :) Love the baby tiles but they didn't have to make the bigger ones even bigger! Boots much faster and seems more responsive now as well which is good )

Sounds about right - all the same I'm happy as I am, no great need for anything that comes along with WP8 :)

I'm happy with mine as well tbh it works well most of the time but has its moments but the newer OS might have fixed that hopefully :-)

I think I'll wait for the second gen of WP8 devices, running "8.5" or whatever it'll be called, let them iron the bugs out of 8.0 and include the features that they've lost from 7.x by not using Zune, like playlist creation/podcast sync. They need to improve their Windows 8 app apparently. :-)
