[ipad] iPads in primary schools - proxy kills everything?

Hi all,

I'm a techie for a few schools in South Yorkshire and one of my schools has recently invested in a few iPads.

We're having real problems with apps that need to use the internet (including iOS mail), the LEA seems to have everything locked down! Has anyone else had the same issues and have you overcome them? If we can get round these I'd ideally like to start pushing them out to other schools, if not does anyone have a good alternative?

Depends on the lea, some have a transparent proxy you can use and others require you setup your own transparent proxy to bypass security and let apples drivel through.

 

Proxies really are at the end of their lifespan though as they generally just get in the way. If you have an Isa/tmg server or smoothwall this should not be too difficult to sort though.

I'd suggest you communicate with your LA and get some answers, but you can also set up a proxy.pac file and host it in IIS on Windows Server (in school). This contains all the exceptions and your proxy server itself.

Smoothwall currently not allowing newer version of iTunes, Anything to do with Apple Push Service is a pain when configuring firewalls.
